Happy New Year Everyone!
I have already heard some grumbling about there being nothing to do here at this time of year. “Pah!” is what I say to you! There’s loads on! More than you’ll even be able to do!!

- The 36th Bermuda International Race Weekend is on from Friday, January 14th until Sunday the 16th. This event is where athletes like me(!) from all over the world come together for their choice of the marathon or half-marathon on Sunday or the 10K on Saturday. If you are insane, you can also participate in the 2nd Bermuda Triangle Challenge where you run the Front Street Mile on Friday evening, the 10K on Saturday and the full or half-marathon on Sunday. You will receive a special T-shirt and medal so that other people will know that you’re insane too. After the Front Street Mile on the Friday, the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band & Highland Dancers and the Bermuda Regiment Band will be performing at the flagpole. More details at www.bermudaraceweekend.com.
- The Caledonian Society of Bermuda's Annual Burns Supper for 2011 will be at Tucker's Point Hotel and Spa on Saturday, January 29th. A Burns Supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, author of many famous poems and songs. A few examples include Auld Lang Syne (yes, the one we all sing at New Year), To a Mouse (the phrase "the best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley" comes from this poem) and Tam O' Shanter (considered by many to be one of the best examples of the narrative poem in European literature). You do NOT have to be a literary buff to enjoy this (Burns himself was a renowned drunken womaniser), you just have to enjoy cocktails, dinner, poetry and entertaining toasts and speeches. Tickets are $75 per person and available from IHind@becl.bm. Here's the link to the Facebook event - poster and menu to follow! **UPDATE: The menu for this evening features Cock-a-Leekie Soup (chicken and leek), Haggis with Clapshot (potatoes and turnips/swedes), Steak and Ale Pie or Chargrilled Salmon Fillet and Tipsy Laird (Scottish trifle) followed by tea and coffee. Here is a copy of the poster.
