January 9th, 2019 Bermuda Calendar Update

Happy New Year Bermuda! 

This is the first post of 2019 and I hope everyone’s year has gotten off to a good start. Below are all of the new events that have been added to the calendar since December 19th. As always, be sure to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of all upcoming events, including those previously covered in previous posts.

 

 

The Yoga Centre invites you to join their 8-week course, Yoga for the Pelvic Floor starting on Wednesday, January 9th.

Starting 11am each week at their premises on Victoria Street, this course is designed specifically for those looking to strengthen or release tightness in the pelvic floor area, common for both women and men. It is particularly useful for ageing students and or those with minor incontinence issues.

Students come away with a re-patterning and re-orientation of the pelvic floor area that leads to better alignment, pain-release and reduced weakness in the pelvic floor area.

This course is taught by a senior experience yoga teacher – E-RYT 500 through Yoga Alliance and certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT).

The cost is $160 per person.

The Sportseller in the Washington Mall are celebrating their 40th Anniversary with a host of free events starting on Wednesday, January 9th.

First in the series is the Horizon Health Pilates Mat Class, open to all abilities and genders. After pilates, an After-Party will follow where class participants can enjoy refreshments sponsored by Discovery Wines & Spirits, Truly Spiked & Sparkling and Icelandic Glacial Natural Spring Water.

The second event in the series is On Running Goslings Rum Run, on Wednesday, January 16th. Registration begins at 5pm at the Sportseller, where you can try on and borrow a pair of shoes for the race which begins at 6pm. Participants must complete 1 lap of the designated .6mile loop, then drink one of Goslings Iconic Cocktails. Repeat 3 more times drinking a different cocktail after each loop (non-alcoholic choices will also be available). An After-Party will follow, sponsored by Goslings.

The third event is the Women Who Workout & Wine on Wednesday, January 23rd.  Space is limited to the first 20 females who sign-up. Bring your own mat. The class is sponsored by Health and Happiness Coach Tania Kowalski, teaching circuit training for women. An After-Party will follow, sponsored by Pitt & Co. and Barritt’s.

The fourth event is the series is Todd Crew’s Yoga For Dudes on Wednesday, January 30th. Bring your own mat. An After-Party will follow, sponsored by Pitt & Co. and Barritt’s.

The fifth event in the series is Lucky Elephant Wellness Yoga for Athletes on Sunday, February 6th. Space is limited to the first 35 participants who sign-up. Bring your own mat. An After-Party will follow, sponsored by Discovery Wines & Spirits.

The sixth event in the series is B-Active For Life Metabolic Circuit Training on Wednesday, February 13th. Space is limited to the first 20 participants who sign-up. An After-Party sponsored by Discovery Wines & Spirits – Truly Spiked & Sparkling and Icelandic Glacial Natural Spring Water, will follow.

The final event in this series is the Mizuno Glow 5k Walk/Run on Sunday, February 20th. After completing the designated course, participants can join them for the After-Party in celebration of their 40th Anniversary.

Registration for all classes/events begins at 5:30pm at the Sportseller, unless otherwise stated. All events begin promptly at 6pm. After-Parties are open to participants only.

BIFF Flix presents Mr. SOUL! Ellis Haizlip and the Birth of Black Power TV on Wednesday, January 9th

Starting at 6:30pm at Specialty Cinema, this award-winning documentary looks at the influence of Ellis Haizlip, the pioneering television producer who ushered giants and rising stars of black American culture onto the national stage in the US as the host of the groundbreaking show, SOUL! The movie has won the International Documentary Association Award for Best Music Documentary in 2018.

The Yoga Centre invites you to join their Beginner’s Yoga 12-Week Course commencing on Thursday, January 10th

Starting at 5:30pm every Thursdays at their premises on Victoria Street, This 12-Week course is geared to those new to yoga and or those wishing to revive their practice and develop a regular routine.

The course provides step by step instruction into the practice of yoga where students: gain strength and flexibility; confidence in learning how to do the poses correctly; breathing exercise to calm the body and mind and mindfulness to improve focus and concentration.

The instructor – an E-RYT 500 , YACEP, Yoga Alliance Instructor, yoga teachers trainer and yoga therapist – is equip to work with most student abilities with adaptations for challenges, ensuring individual safety first. Overall bodily confidence, strength and flexibility are immediate outcomes of this course.

The price of this course is $260 per person.

The Yoga Centre invites you to join their course 8-week course on Meditation Basics starting on Thursday, January 10th.

Starting 7:30pm each week at their premises on Victoria Street, this program is a good grounding course into the practice of meditation- how to practice; use the mantra; appreciate the various approaches to meditation and mindfulness; what the benefits and obstacles of meditation look like; and, what the goal of meditation is and how it works in daily life. In addition a 30 minute meditation practice is held each week to help solidify the practice.

This promises a good course for beginners or those wishing to become more firmly rooted in their practice and is taught by an E-RYT 500 Yoga Teachers Trainer and experienced meditation teacher in both Eastern and Western mystical traditions.

The cost of the course is $180 per person.

The Women’s Legal Network (“WLN”) will be hosting the second part of their Emotional Intelligence Seminar on Saturday, January 12th.

Starting at 8:30 am at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, this seminar will be led by Dr. Crystal Clay and will focus on practical skills to develop emotional intelligence. Please note that if you did not attend part 1, you can still attend this seminar.

The cost for the event is $50, which includes a continental breakfast. Please note that payment must be received before the event to guarantee your spot. Space is limited.

The Yoga Centre invites you to join their 8-week therapeutic course: ASBN Yoga for Arms, Shoulders, Upper Back & Neck starting on Monday, January 14th.

Starting at 11am each week at their premises on Victoria Street, students will learn valuable techniques to strengthen fingers, hands and wrists: work on poses to improve arm strength, shoulder soreness or weaknesses like frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries and misalignment in the upper back and chest.

Students will come away with an improved upper body and chest, greater alignment in the upper torso, a more open heart and enhanced breathing ability.

Taught by a certified teacher/teachers trainer through Yoga Alliance (E-RYT 500) and yoga therapist (C-IAYT).

PRIDE Bermuda, in partnership with The Bermuda Coalition, is pleased to present the documentary film Marijuana: It’s Complicated. Our Problem, Our Solution screening on Wednesday, January 16th.

Starting at 6pm at BUEI, the documentary, directed and produced by Juanee Scott, looks at the complexities around Marijuana in our community. After the documentary there will be a panel discussion featuring doctors, lawyers, policy makers, and former users discussing this poignant topic.

This documentary is highly recommended for youth aged 11-18 and you are invited to bring your children, friends, family, and co-workers. This is a community conversation, and it’s our job to find the right solutions that best protect our children.

The 2019 Bermuda Marathon Weekend starts with the 2019 Front Street Mile on Friday, January 18th.

The weekend will kick off at 6.30pm on Front Street with a performance by the Royal Bermuda Regiment Band. This will be followed by a series of mile races featuring Primary, Middle, Senior Students, Adults and Elite International Runners and the first race of the Bermuda Triangle Challenge.

The 2019 Bermuda 10k &10k Walk, and 2nd Race of the Bermuda Triangle Challenge will be held on Saturday, January 19th. The races start at 9am and finish at 11am at National Sports Centre.

The 44th annual Bermuda Marathon & Half Marathon, and 3rd Race of the Bermuda Triangle Challenge will be held on Sunday, January 20th. The races start at 9am and finish at 2pm on Front Street.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre are hosting another talk and panel discussion, Cancer Talks: Cervical Cancer on Tuesday, January 22nd.

This will be held from 5:30pm until 7pm at the BUEI where panel guest, Oncologist Dr. Chris Fosker, will discuss the following topics: HPV Vaccination at ages 11-12 (boys and girls), Pap Tests starting at age 21, Pap and HPV co-tests starting at age 30, and Cervical Cancer Treatment.

Interested in becoming a certified and registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance? The Yoga Centre welcomes you to join their Certified Yoga Teachers Training course starting on Friday, January 25th.

This 6-month training program will provide students with an in-depth understanding of yoga while preparing trainees to begin teaching immediately at the end of their training.

This course is designed for those wishing to experience a deep dive into the teachings of yoga so they learn, not just about poses, but about the science and art of yoga and how it applies to everyday life.

The instructor is a certified E-RYT 500, Yoga Alliance Community Education Provider (YACEP), Yoga Instructor and Teachers Trainer, and Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT).

The cost of the training is $3,000 per person. Payment in instalments are permissible.

Interviews are now being conducted for those interested in commencing the training.

A free dinner for those in need is being offered by The Grateful Bread on Thursday, January 31st.

Doors open at 5:45pm at Astwood Hall, adjacent to St. Andrews church on Church Street (opposite HSBC), and service will start promptly at 6pm. Food is served by ticket number until all food is gone. The event finishes at 7:30pm.

All in need are welcome! There will also be free giveaways of clothes, shoes, household items, toiletries and more.

The free meal is provided by the generous donations of their volunteers. Additional volunteers are still needed so sign up to help give back!

The Fat Tire Massive Mountain Bike Series continues at the mysterious, unique and historic Southlands Property, where the next race will be held on Sunday, February 10th.

Starting at 9am, this 5th race of the Fat Tire Massive Mountain Bike Series promises to wow the rider as they make their way around the Southland Park trails within the massive woodland estate.

Riders aged 12 and under will race a 15-minute course (11am start) while juniors will race a 30-minute course (10:15am start). Male & Female Novice will race for 30 minutes (10:15am start) and Male & Female Open Class will race for a period of 60 minutes (9:00am start).

Points Series winner will be the rider with the highest number of accumulated points from their 6 best races in the Fat Tire Massive series.

The 2018-2019 series will continue at Hog Bay Park on February 24th, where you can ride the ups and downs of the steep coastal hillside and network of trails. The series concludes with the final race at Ferry Reach on March 10th, where you can take full advantage of one of the longest courses offered in the season with climbing trails, downhills, historic forts and ocean views.

The cost of this event is $25 per race or $150 for the season. Children and young adults under the age of 19 race for free.
