April 19th, 2010

Hi all

<Sigh>  Monday already, how did the weekend go by so quickly?  Don’t worry though, there’s loads coming up to distract you:

  • Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society (BMDS) will be holding their second major production of 2010, String of Pearls, running from April 22nd to 24th and 29th to May 1st at Daylesford Theatre at 8pm. Tickets are $25 and available on www.bmds.bm along with full details.

  • The Caledonian Society of Bermuda are holding a ceilidh (traditional Scottish drinking and dancing, pronounced kay-lee) at the Hamilton Princess on Saturday, May 15th. Kick-off is at 8pm, dress code is casual and there will be a cash bar. Don’t worry if you’re not fortunate enough to be Scottish and so don’t know the moves – they will teach you there. Tickets are $45 and available from ihind@becl.bm or at the door. Here is the flyer. View this photo

  • In recognition of World Autism Awareness Month the Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) has invited renowned British autistic artist, Stephen Wiltshire, to Bermuda from May 17th until the 23rd, 2010. Known for his detailed cityscapes, Stephen has a particular talent for drawing to-scale and accurate representations of cities, sometimes after having only observed them briefly. There will also be a special Gala Event at City Hall on Saturday, May 22nd from 8pm until 10pm with a cocktail reception, dinner and auction, accompanied by live music. This is a unique chance to bid on Stephen’s original artwork of Bermuda while supporting two worthy charities. Tickets are sold at $200 per person and all proceeds go toward the BNG and BASE. Tickets are available at the BNG front desk or by emailing membership@bng.bm.

  • The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda’s (G&S) production of The History Boys will be running from May 19th until 22nd. I haven’t seen this show before but it won six Tony Awards on Broadway in 2008 and G&S always put on stellar productions. Tickets go on sale this Saturday on www.premiertickets.bm.

Sorry to anyone who was stuck either in or out of Bermuda due to the recent volcanic activity in Iceland.  If it makes you feel any better, it’s surely better to be grounded that to have to hear the announcement the passengers in this article had to hear: “Good evening ladies and gentlemen. This is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are all doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress.”:

Morning all

Just wanted to let you all know quickly about Eat! Shop! Give!, Bermuda’s premier annual charitable shopping and dining event.  When you make a donation of $10 to Tomorrow’s Voices you will receive an Eat Shop Give Card giving you access to offers at participating Merchants. Donations collected will go towards Tomorrow’s Voices' mission of providing intensive therapeutic services to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  This runs from today until April 10th and more details can be found at www.tomorrowsvoices.bm/events/specialevents.htm.   There is a downloadable Merchant Booklet at this link Download ESG%20Merchant%20Booklet%202010 and the discounts are pretty good – some examples, 20% discount at Gibbons, 10% off at Face and Body Day Spa, ungraded rooms at the Fairmont hotels when booking the local rate, 15% off the spa at Cambridge Beaches, 20% discount on luggage at Heel Quik, and many more.  I always like shopping for a good cause..

Have a fabulous Easter weekend – I certainly will, as I’ll be having a chocolate martini at the stroke of midnight on Saturday/Sunday.  On Sunday morning, I will be starting my day off with a big bowl Coco Pops and will take it from there.  If you don’t hear from me after this, I will probably have died from a chocolate overdose, but you can take comfort in the fact that I died happy…  J
