July 7th, 2010

Hi boys and girls

I have found out some amazing news – today, July 7th is Chocolate Day!!  I am not even making this up, it's actually an official day!  Excellent, not that I usually need one but now I have an excuse to top up my happy levels all day long..  :o)  Right, where are the Coco Pops:

  • Well, the World Cup is coming to an end (personally, I lost all interest after South Korea got knocked out – I had them in the office sweep) so for anyone looking for an alternative to watching the final in a bar/pub, there's a free World Cup Final event in Barrs’s Bay Park on Sunday, July 11th from 2.30pm until 6pm.  This is a City of Hamilton event sponsored by Catlin and is a family-oriented event, with fun castles and face-painting for kids, with a big screen showing the football.  Bring your own chairs and food/drink (although there will be vendors there).  Here's the flyer.

  • The Fairmont Hamilton Princess are continuing with their 125th Anniversary celebrations and have a new offer for Thursday to Sunday stays (three night minimum).  For a package price of $999, they'll include the following – three nights accommodation on Fairmont Gold, deluxe continental breakfast, afternoon tea, evening canapés in Fairmont Gold Lounge, $100 resort credit per stay and two 125th anniversary champagne glasses. For more details or to book, see http://www.fairmont.com/promo/ham_125anniversary2.

  • Also at the Hamilton Princess, Harley's are running a lunch promo for July.  Join them for lunch on the terrace and if you buy one lunch entree, get the second one free!  This offer is only for their Facebook Fans – just bring proof with you.

Morning all!

First of all, apologies to all the email subscribers, there seemed to be a slight technical hitch and Thursday's post wasn't sent out until Friday.  I haven't had any problems with Feedburner before so hopefully this was just a once-off.  Anyway, lots coming up:

  • On Saturday, July 10th is The 6th Annual Tha Underground Music Awards at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts. From 6pm, there is the Red Carpet Reception with the awards starting promptly at 8pm. After the awards show is the Official After-Party in the reception area, hosted by Dunn Deal Entertainment. Tickets are $30 or $50 for VIPs and available from Sound Stage. Here's the flyer!

  • Start ripping up your bedsheets and practice wrestling lions because Snorkel Park are hosting the ultimate Frat Party, Toga! Toga! Toga! This will be on Saturday, July 17th from 10pm until 3am. Dancing, drinking, and debauchery are mandatory with Top 40 Video DJ OB1, DJ Einstein formerly of G135 and top house, dance, trance DJ Supa J. There will also be immortal contests (no, I have no idea what this means), live entertainment, beer and cocktail specials and best toga prizes. No need to worry if you don't live near Dockyard as there will be a 3.15am ferry to town. The cost is $30 or $20 if you're a member. Here's the flyer.

  • Luckily, toga addicts can get their fix at Snorkel Park because Bermuda Police Rugby Team have changed it up this year! Instead of their usual Toga Party for Cup Match, BPRFC are inviting you to get leid (hee, hee) at their Cheeky Tiki Luau Party! This will be on Wednesday, July 28th from 7pm – there will be a cash bar ($50 for 10 drinks), Hawaiian Games, BBQ, and prizes for the Best Costumes. Tickets are $20 and available from bermudapolicerugby@gmail.com. Rock-a-hula baby! Here's the flyer.

  • On the same night, Snorkel Park Beach invites you to the island's first annual Soca Fete! This will be headlined by a world class line up of renowned Soca entertainers including Buffy (#1 female Soca artist), Traffik (#1 selling Soca Band), Shal Marshal (#1 radio and TV personality) and Super Jigga TC (#1 Trinidadian DJ). The scheduling goes like this: from 7pm until 10pm, you can enjoy an Island Beach Party dining experience (book for reservations), then from 10pm until 1am there is local and international entertainment, and then from 1am until 3am you can dance the night away with local and international party DJs. Fast Ferries available all night. No details of pricing yet but tickets will be available soon island-wide. Here's the flyer.

  • More Cup Match festivities, The Chewstick Foundation presents their 5th Annual Beachfest Emancipation Celebration on Thursday, July 29th at Horseshoe Bay Beach. Beachfest is the biggest free event in Bermuda, with games and sports for all to partake, and performances by the hottest artists, bands and DJs (Dirkistan, De General, DJ Einstein, DJ Chubb, DJ Aztec, and more). All proceeds in aid of the Chewstick Foundation youth programmes which take place in the schools and prisons. Kick-off is at 11am and continues all day and all night. Full details are on www.beach-fest.com.

Morning all!

I’m just going to make this a quickie because… <racking brains to think of an acceptable reason>  Oh, alright then, I’m tired and I want to go to bed (I type this up the night before)…sorry!  Anyway, here are some things coming up over the next few days:

  • If Chaplin Bay at the weekend wasn’t enough for you, Latin and Rumba°r will be having a free wine-tasting in celebration of Canada Day tonight! Featuring drink specials all night long, the launch of Pillitteri Wines from the Niagara region, Hannah Strang body-painting maple leafs WHEREVER you want it, and DJs will be mixing until the wee hours.  Here’s the flyer, eh?

  • The Athletic Club are inviting you to unleash your inner karate kid with the new BodyCombat™ courses launching shortly  This is a Les Mills programme and is an empowering cardio workout that unleashes your inner combat skills and benefits your overall health. This fiercely energetic programme will be led by instructor Rebecca Wright and is inspired by martial arts and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai.  The Athletic Club of Bermuda is offering a free orientation class tonight at 6.30pm to help get the community excited about this new fitness craze. The programme course will begin on Monday, 5th of July and will run for four weeks. The cost for current Athletic Club members is $89, non-members and guests are $115. I can completely recommend any of the Les Mills programme of classes as they are all awesome, fun and motivating – I’m not one to get excited about working out but I’m crossing my fingers that they bring more of them to Bermuda.  Here’s the flyer and here’s the press release too!

  • A question I get asked a lot is, “When’s the next booze cruise?”.  Well, you bunch of drunken sailors, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a whole series of them coming up!  The first is this Friday, then Friday, July 16 and Friday, July 30th.  Cruise for a Cure aboard the Restless Native catamaran as an alternative to the normal Happy Hour and you’ll also be donating to charity while getting your drink on!  Tickets are $45 ($10 of which goes to Bermuda Cancer and Health), the boat leaves Albuoys Point at 6pm, returning at 8pm and the bar opens at 5.30pm.  This is NOT all-you-can-drink but Happy Hour prices of $5 each or 4 for $20 for drink tickets will apply and light snacks will be served.  Tickets are available from Lindo’s, Bermuda Cancer and Health or at www.restlessnative.bm.  Here’s the flyer.

  • Also this Friday, Dany Pen, Toronto/Bermuda-based installation artist, has some pieces showing in the Photography Exhibition at the Onions Gallery in Bermuda.  This Friday is the opening night from 5pm until 7pm – you can view her website at http://www.artistdanypen.webs.com.

  • There are loads more events coming up later in the month – I’ll do the write-up next week but the flyers are on the website already.  This includes Tha Underground Music Awards, Soca Fete at Snorkel Park and Bermuda’s Argentine Tango Festival!

Morning!

Hope you all had a great weekend.  I managed to upgrade myself from half-girl-half-lobster-creature to girl-with-a-slight-tan at some point over the past couple of weeks so I'm very excited about that!  Anway, down to business:

  • Hurray, BMDS are putting on a new show!  Fahrenheit 451, based on the classic dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury, will be showing from July 1st until July 9th (except Sunday the 4th).  Showtime is 8pm at Daylesford Theatre and tickets are $25 and available by phone at 292-0848 during office hours or online from www.bmds.bm outside of box office hours.  For further information contact producers jburrell@northrock.bm or polina@ocean.bm or see the flyer here.
  • From Wednesday, July 7th until Saturday the 17th, there will be an exclusive Live Music Event at the Lido Complex.  It's not often that you get to see Grammy award-winning Latin artists for free but that's exactly what you're getting here with David Oquendo, Cuban Guitarist,  and Willy Torres, Puerto Rican percussionist!  Bermuda’s own guitarist Armando Solis will also be performing.  Live Latin music will be from 7pm until 11pm and social dancing will be from 9pm until 1am.  Here's the flyer.
  • Robin Hood have kindly sent me details of what they have going on right now.  Firstly is their College Games Night, every Wednesday until the end of August.  All are welcome and they will be having Beer Pong, Flip Cup and Boat Races with loads of drink specials, including a bucket of 6 Heineken for $25, pints of Carlsberg for $5.50 and free jello shots with purchase of alcoholic beverages.  I obviously didn't party enough as a student since I never got to play any of these games… :o(  Anyway, they have great prizes weekly and their Grand Finale prize at the end of August will be a Nintendo Wii.  View this photo.  Also, they are open all day everyday during the World Cup showing all the games, with Bucket Specials on Heineken, Amstel, Corona and Budweiser available, as well as Becks for $4.  Every Tuesday is Quiz Night, 8pm start and $10 entry for teams of four.  If that isn't enough RH action for you, on Saturdays, they have jam session nights with open mic for anyone who wants to hear, or even play some live music.  Their new menus are out and they have upgraded to all Certified Angus Beef and fresh produce – they are the Best of Bermuda Award winners for Pub Food.
  • Willow Stream are offering a Flip-Flop Facial – no, it's not a weird new technique, you just have to book their 90-minute Ultimate Facial at a special reduced rate of $239 (a $30 savings) and they’ll throw in a pair of fabulous fashion flip flops.  Details are on this link.
  • Bermuda.com have launched a new website dedicated solely to Cup Matchwww.BermudaCupMatch.com.  The vast majority of you will be very familiar with what Cup Match entails but any island newbies or tourists might want to check out the History section for some background of the biggest holiday of the year.

This is a horrible story from an animal rights point of view but it’s also the most surreal opening line I have ever seen in the news:

MONKEY NEWS:  It turns out that even King Kong is scared of the doctor:

Does anyone read this far down?  I'm just wondering….anyway, have a great week!
