Batten down the hatches and stock up on the rum – not only do we have a hurricane warning but another holiday weekend is almost upon us!  Let’s just enjoy whatever happens and hope we see some sunshine.  Here is the latest update on island events:

 

0828 Palms Oncology Massage

Learn about the use of massage therapy to relieve tension and pain at PALMS: Oncology Massage, a free health presentation at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre on Thursday, August 28th.

Increasingly the benefits of massage therapy for people living with cancer are being realized. Massage therapy may help ease pain, minimize nausea, improve sleep and ease depression and anxiety. When provided by a licensed, experienced, and specially-trained therapist, massage can be an important component of healing.

The session will being at 5.45pm and Kathi Rogers, Certified Massage Therapist, PALMS will be the presenter.

0828 BUEI Ocean Vet

Back by popular demand, BUEI is pleased to announce the next Ocean Vet showing on Thursday, August 28th.

Ocean Vet is a factual entertainment series like no other and follows the exploits and adventures of Dr. Neil Burnie in the oceans around Bermuda.
The Ocean Vet crew are currently filming a full 12 part series from March to October 2014.

The show is being made by UK video production company gassProductions, creators of the hit Discovery and WFN fishing show Rod and Rucksack. Ocean Vet will be broadcast internationally in 2015.

Episodes include tagging tiger sharks, hunting for black grouper, following humpback whales on their migratory journey, monitoring for night sharks, adventures through the floating jungle and so much more. This is your opportunity to see new footage, the official trailer and hear first-hand accounts from the crew.

Happy Hour prices on drinks and sushi are available from 5pm at Harbourfront, with the full menu available from 6pm. A preview of BUEI’s new Sea Level Change exhibit will also be available from 6.30pm until 7.30pm. The lecture itself will start at 7.30pm and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount to anyone dining there before or after the event. Please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount (it cannot be combined with any other offer).

Tickets are already flying out the door and it is expected to sell out like previous showings. The cost is $20 for members, $25 for non-members and available by calling 294-0204 or visiting Oceans Gift Shop at BUEI.

 

0829 Masterworks Student Summer Art

The Students of Masterworks Education have been hard at work and play. Eight weeks of intense paint pushing and colour wheels have finally paid off for these budding artists.

To showcase all of their artistic talent, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art invite the parents, members and the general public to come and appreciate the talented tweens for the opening reception of their Student Summer Exhibition, from 4.30pm until 6.30pm on Friday, August 29th.

There is no cover charge for the opening reception and the exhibit will run until September 10th.

Bermuda Society of Arts1

There are two new exhibits opening on Friday, August 29th at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall.

In partnership with KBB and sponsored by ACE, BSoA presents their annual TrashArt Show in the Onions Gallery with works created entirely from marine debris. You will be amazed at the imaginative use of beach plastic and other flotsam washed onto our shores. These artworks are guaranteed to last forever.

In Studios A and B, two of Bermuda’s talented young artists, Hannah Emmerson and Erika Jenkinson Mattatall present their second show at BSoA featuring their latest works of art in an exciting show entitled Once Upon a Plan B.

Opening night will be at BSoA on Friday, August 29th from 5pm until 7pm with the usual wine, beer and soda with cheese and crackers provided.

These shows will run for 3 weeks, closing on Tuesday, September 16th at 4pm.

0830 High Summer Hawaiian Party

Get your Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts at the ready as the Bermuda Police Rugby Club (BPRFC) is promising aloha-fun at their High Summer Hawaiian Party on Saturday, August 30th.

From 6pm until 1am, you can expect a BBQ, cash bar (including swizzle with a Hawaiian twist), music, dancing, drinking games and general merriment throughout the evening.

Entry is free and there will be a cash bar for food and drinks.

0830 Ethiopian Dinner at Muse

An opportunity to experience a night of Ethiopia’s ancient tradition and cuisine is on offer as Muse Restaurant and Skybar is hosting an Ethiopian Dinner with a Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony on Saturday, August 30th.

From 7pm until 10pm, Muse will be hosting its Ethiopian Night, which will feature traditional Ethiopian cuisine buffet style.

The cost for the buffet dinner is $55 per person, which includes coffee and dessert.

0830 Twilight Summer Series

Twilight Summer Series is heading to the East again for another Day At The Beach & Movie Night at Clearwater Beach on Saturday, August 30th and Sunday, August 31st.

From 2pm, there will be games that the entire family can enjoy, as well as fun castles, cotton candy, popcorn and slushies throughout the day.

Once the sun goes down, take out your chairs or blankets and settle down to watch a movie on the big screen. Saturday night will show The Smurfs 2 at 7.55pm, followed by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at 9.45pm and Sunday will show The Lego Movie at 7.55pm, followed by The Monuments Men at 9.40pm.

Beach lovers should head to St. George’s this holiday weekend for Web Republica at Tobacco Bay, the final summer beach party of 2014 on Sunday, August 31st.

From noon until 9pm, the full beach bar will be offering $5 Tobacco Bay shooters, $35 beer bucket specials, and the island-styled cafe will be open all day with the grill fired up. DJ Choice will be playing happy beach anthems all day before transitioning into a special Cafe del Mar sunset experience.

The first 100 bar patrons after 7.30pm can enjoy a special sunset toast to the end of summer with a complimentary Bacardi Green Flash shooter with each cocktail purchased.

The finale of this year’s Summer Sundays Series will be on Sunday, September 7th, and promises a focus on old school and new school reggae music with the theme Reggae Vibes.

From 3pm until 8pm in Victoria Park, the concert will feature a host of live musical performers from Bermuda’s local talent pool, a kids zone and a host that will keep you fully entertained throughout the day.

0922 Tomasz Tabor Memorial Golf Tournament

Following his untimely passing in February, some of the people who loved him have organised the Tomasz Tabor Memorial Golf Tournament, taking place at Tucker’s Point Golf Course on Monday, September 22nd.

Registration will begin at noon with a 1pm shotgun start. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams, as well as Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive. The Hole in One Prize is a Chevrolet Spark 2014, sponsored by Rayclan.

The reception will follow at 6pm at Rumbar in Hamilton with the Prize Ceremony and Raffle Announcement at 7pm. There will be complimentary canapes and a cash bar with all proceeds going to charities, namely the Bermuda Golf Foundation and the Bermuda Hospitality Institute.

The cost is $500 for teams of 4, $125 for individuals, which includes 18 holes, cart and a tournament golf shirt. Raffle tickets cost $10, with prizes including a trip to San Francisco.

Enjoy a fun evening for a good cause at Action on Alzheimer’s & Dementia’s Rum Tasting event on Friday, September 26th.

This will take place at Bermuda Society of Arts in City Hall from 6pm until 8.30pm.

Proceeds will benefit Action on Alzheimer’s & Dementia, a Bermuda-based charity who provide services such as monthly support group meetings for caregivers and help with finding local resources. More information is available on their website at www.alzbermuda.com.

Join the Bermuda Zoological Society as they celebrate Zoobilee 2014: The Hungry Games on Saturday, October 4th.

Enjoy food-tasting stations by a variety of celebrity chefs, music and dancing, a wide variety of games, and a silent auction. Doors open at 7pm at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, and the party doesn’t stop until midnight.

1005 PartnerRe 5K Women's Run and Walk

Now in its 17th year of supporting women’s causes in Bermuda, the PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run & Walk for 2014 will be on Sunday, October 5th.

This event is for women only and the Juniors 2K Race will begin at 8.15am, with the Women’s 5K Run, Competitive Walk and Fun Walk all beginning at 9am, from the Botanical Gardens.

Race awards include thousands of dollars in prizes for all age categories, plus fantastic draw prizes and Grand Draw prizes. There are also gift bags and t-shirts available for the first 1000 registrants.

The entry fee ranges between $5 and $30, depending on your age, whether or not you are a MAAC member, and whether you are a runner or a walker. Registration is open until 6pm on Friday, October 3rd, with number pickup and late registration from 9am until 11am on Saturday, October 4th.

All entry fee proceeds will be matched by title sponsor PartnerRe Ltd. and given directly to the Bermuda Diabetes Association.
