Sure to appeal to all past and present members of the Regiment, as well as collectors around the world, the Bermuda Post Office commemorates the Bermuda Regiment’s 50 Years (BR50) with a beautiful 5-stamp issue. This occasion will be marked with the BR50 First Day Cover launch event at 11am at the General Post Office on Thursday, April 16th.

The Bermuda Regiment was formed on September 1st, 1965 and this issue of commemorative stamps celebrates 50 years of dedicated service of the men and women of the Regiment to Bermuda.

The stamps will depict both the modern day roles and highly-valued traditions of the Regiment:

  • Disaster Preparedness – The Bermuda Regiment is often called upon to provide assistance when Bermuda is responding to a crisis;
  • Maritime Operations – The Bermuda Regiment Boat Troop conducts joint maritime patrols and marine search and rescue operations with the Bermuda Police Service;
  • Band and Corps of Drums – The Band and Corps of Drums of the Bermuda Regiment has a cherished place in the hearts of many;
  • Ceremonial – The Bermuda Regiment is very proud of its fine tradition of providing the pomp and circumstance for grand occasions; and
  • Colours of the Bermuda Regiment – Prior to modern communication, Colours served as the rallying point for Regiments on the battlefield and were fiercely guarded in battle.

You are encouraged to secure your own piece of history and don’t forget, they make great gifts and can be framed beautifully.

0422 Peppercorn Ceremony

Those of you who love olde worlde-style pomp and circumstance, take note – the Annual Peppercorn Ceremony for this year will be from 10.30am on Wednesday, April 22nd.

This is His Excellency the Governor’s Annual State Visit to the ancient and loyal Town of St George, when he is officially welcomed by the Mayor, the Corporation and the people of St George’s.

During this ceremony, the Governor will will receive the Annual Rent of one peppercorn for the Old State House, Bermuda’s oldest building, from the Master of Lodge St. George #200, on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The Governor will then hold a meeting of the Governor’s Council, attended by the Premier and Cabinet Ministers.

This quaint tradition includes lots of period costumes, military uniforms, a parade and a horse-drawn carriage, all helping to transport you back to 1816 when the ceremony first started. As usual, the Governor will arrive at King’s Square at the very precise time of 10.58am.

The Bermuda Regiment provides Guards of Honour and a Colour Party, who march on to the beat of the Band and Corps of Drums. A special 50th Anniversary addition to this year’s Peppercorn Ceremony will be the Proclamation by the Mayor of St George’s bestowing Freedom of the Town on the Bermuda Regiment. This special honour is an ancient custom observed elsewhere and is a first for both the Regiment and the town.

If that wasn’t enough entertainment, following the parade is the Bermuda International Town Crier competition, where 25 town criers from the United Kingdom and Canada are travelling to Bermuda to compete to win the title of International Town Crier.

Finally, a special reception for personnel on parade and invited guests will be hosted by BR50 to recognise the Regiment’s Freedom of the Town. If you served in the Regiment’s predecessor units or at the date of amalgamation of the Bermuda Regiment on September 1st, 1965, then you’re invited!
