July 8th, 2015: Bermuda Events Update
Morning Kids!
It’s certainly a scorcher of a month so far – can you imagine how August will be?! Anyway, let’s make the most of it and have lots of fun in the sun while it lasts – here’s the latest on the Bermuda calendar. Don’t forget to check out the Quick Recap section at the bottom of this post for details of events which have been covered in previous posts:
Bermuda National Gallery invite you to a must-see short run exhibition in their Private Collection Series from Tuesday, July 7th.
This features an original sculpture by Auguste Rodin, French (1840-1917). The artwork on display, entitled Le Désespoir, c. 1890, forms part of Rodin’s monumental sculpture Gates of Hell. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience an original Rodin.
Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays, closed on public holidays. The exhibit will run until July 25th.
Admission is $5 for adults and free for BNG members, NARM members, seniors, students and children.
For more information, visit www.BermudaNationalGallery.com.
The July edition of the PartnerRe Art Lecture Series will be at Bermuda National Gallery at City Hall on Wednesday, July 8th.
The guest speaker will be Jennifer Thompson, The Gloria and Jack Drosdick Associate Curator of European Painting before 1900 and the Rodin Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, speaking on the topic, Auguste Rodin: The Gates of Hell.
The French sculptor Auguste Rodin worked on a pair of monumental bronze doors known as The Gates of Hell for nearly forty years. Following an initial, intense period of activity in the 1880s, the artist continued to make changes to the plaster model for the project until his death in 1917. The hundreds of figures on the surface of the doors—who express the imagined anguish, suffering, pain, and regret of those residing in hell—exerted a strong influence on Rodin’s work. He detached figures from The Gates, enlarged them, and combined them with others to create new compositions. The lecture will explore works originally conceived for The Gates of Hell and reveal Rodin’s boundless fascination with the expressive possibilities of the human form and his ability to reimagine ideas.
This lecture is being run in conjunction with The Private Collection Series exhibition featuring an original Rodin sculpture on view until July 25th.
The reception will be from 5.30pm, followed by the lecture itself at 6pm.
The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members.
