The weather might be a little temperamental at the moment but at least we are getting closer to Spring/Summer with each passing day.
Here is the latest upcoming fun in Bermuda:
Feeling safe and secure in your home and neighbourhood is essential for all of us, but can present special challenges if you’ve lost or are losing vision. For this reason, the Bermuda Society For The Blind presents Keeping You and Your Home Safe: Tips From the Bermuda Police Service on Wednesday, January 20th.
From 6pm at Beacon House, the Bermuda Police Service’s Central Community Action Team (CCAT) will share ways to make your home and neighborhood as safe as possible.

InterNations Bermuda are already shaking it up for 2016 as their first event of the year be on a Wednesday. Promising just as much fun as at their usual Thursday night gathering of expats, they’ll be taking it to the Lanes for the InterNations Expat Group Bowling Night on Wednesday, January 20th.
From 6.30pm at Warwick Lanes, you can expect a little exercise and a lot of laughter. The central meeting place is at the bar and dinner is available too. Bowling is not a requirement, so you can come for the good conversation, if you prefer.
As always, you’re welcome to bring friends. Everyone should sign up and RSVP at www.InterNations.org.
There is no cover charge. Those who wish to bowl and/or order food and drink will pay their own way.

Bermuda Youth Library presents the Reading Odyssey reading challenge, from Monday, January 4th until Thursday, March 24th.
Check out 2 or more books from the library and get a star punch in your Reading Odyssey card. After 4 star punches, you can turn your card in for a prize with completed cards eligible for the grand prize draw that will take place on March 26th.

Looking for a consistent, safe, clean and friendly environment that will provide your child with a solid foundation? Then you may want to check out Onionpatch Academy’s Open House, daily until Friday, January 22nd.
The Onionpatch Academy was opened in August 2011 and has sought to redefine early childhood education in Bermuda by providing quality care in an environment that develops the whole child. They have a developmentally appropriate faith-based curriculum which provides their young students, aged 3 months to 4 years, with solid foundation in mathematics, language acquisition and development, science, reading/writing, and social studies. They have a convenient location and also offer extra curricular activities in Spanish, Music, Art and Dance.
Staff are all certified and CPR and SCARS trained and most have been with them for 2 or more years, which provides consistency for parents and students. Both staff and students wear uniforms which helps to solidify that they are very serious about what they do.
Onionpatch Academy communicate with parents via email, notes, their website, and classroom and school newsletters. They have great parent support and have community partners who them can call upon to assist with special events such as their sports day (North Village Club) and the annual Walk-a-thon (Parks Department and Barritts).
You will be able to go and see for yourself from now until Friday, January 22nd. From 9.30am until 11.30am each day, visitors will get to see A Day In the Life of An Onionpatch Student. Informational pamphlets outlining the programme and activities will be available and staff will be on-hand to answer any questions that you may have.

Offering a variety of community events that are open to the public, Bermuda College Science Week 2016 will be running from Monday, January 25th until Thursday, January 28th.
Firstly, the Corange Science Public Forum will be on Monday, January 25th. In the North Hall Lecture Theatre (G301) at 6.30pm, Dr. Tammy Trott will speak on the topic, Science for Fisheries Management: Black Grouper in Bermuda. Black grouper is a historically important fishery species in Bermuda; however, little was known of its biology until recently. Hear about the age, growth, reproduction, and efforts to sustain the black grouper harvest in Bermuda.
The Applied Technology Showcase will take place in the Technical Centre & Courtyard at 6.30pm on Tuesday, January 26th. This will be a Bermuda College showcase of the latest technology with representatives from Bermuda’s leading businesses, including appliances, automotive, renewable energy, and HVAC, plus 3-D printing technology.
On Wednesday, January 27th, there will be a Nursing Exhibition in the Technical Centre. From 6.30pm, you will be able to come out and see the many roles of nursing and discover a career pathway for you, including Oncology, Paediatric, Intensive Care, Palliative, Seniors, and more.
In the Student Hall, the Live, Love, Eat Culinary Demonstration & Sampling will start at 6.30pm on Thursday, January 28th. Popular Chef Tenieka Eve is back with more delicious recipes for you to make and sample.

The Bermuda Zoological Society invites you to join them for the first installment of their lecture series, Hurricanes 101: A Bermuda Focus on Thursday, January 28th.
The lecture will begin at 7pm in the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo Education Classroom. Hurricanes have shaped Bermuda’s history both culturally and geologically on a fairly annual basis. This lecture is designed to offer an introduction to how, where and when tropical cyclones (including hurricanes) form, what mechanisms make them move (or track) in different patterns, where the strongest winds are located, how tropical storms differ from winter gales, and how to interpret, and therefore act, on the various levels of local watches and warnings.

Sure to be of great interest to anyone interested in the marine environment, including snorkelers and divers, the latest in the series of BUEI Talks will be All “Sea” Creatures Great and Small by Ron Lucas and Warren De Klerk on Thursday, January 28th.
Ron Lucas and Warren De Klerk are two of Bermuda’s most prolific underwater photographers. They have travelled widely to extend their portfolios of exotic reef species and will present and discuss their most interesting images. This is an opportunity to learn about species ranging from the largest fish in the ocean to critters under 1 centimetre in size, many of which can only be found in the centre of the Coral Triangle – Indonesia and the Philippines. Scientists speculate that following the Ice Age reef fish in the world were restocked from the Coral Triangle as these oceans were least effected by the big freeze.
Ron Lucas will be available to sign copies of Bermuda Reef Portraits. If you have not yet got your copy of this book, it is available from the Oceans Gift Shop.
The lecture will start at 7.30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event. If you work in or support a charity in any capacity, then you won’t want to miss Building Hope, Bermuda’s only Third Sector Conference presented by The Centre on Philanthropy on Friday, January 29th.
From 8am until 5pm at the Hamilton Princess, you can spend your day collaborating first-hand with experts and peers to strengthen the charitable sector. Attendees will explore capacity building, fundraising, compliance, our current and future social state, and so much more.
There will also be an unveiling of their new programme to promote collaboration and consolidation within the charitable sector.
The registration fee is $200 for members of the Centre on Philanthropy or $225 for non-members.

The Clara Mohammed School presents a screening of the documentary Uyghurs: Prisoners of the Absurd on Saturday, January 30th.
Directed by Patricio Henriquez, the movie explores the experience of 22 men from China’s persecuted Uyghur minority who were detained in Guantanamo as terrorists. Henríquez focuses on three of these “prisoners of the absurd,” including one Bermuda resident, who were linked to worldwide terror networks through no fault of their own. The screening will start at 6.30pm in the Masjid Muhammad Auditorium, and the running time of the movie is 98 minutes.
Admission is $15 per person, or $25 per family, including children aged 12 to 15.

Cedarbridge Academy presents the gospel concert Faith Love Hope on Saturday, January 30th.
Doors to the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium will open at 6.30pm with the patron reception at 6.45pm and showtime at 7.30pm. Performing artists will include Mrs. Kalmar Richards (Principal of CBA), Last Call, CBA Alumni Choir, Cindy Smith, Anointed with Praise Dancers, Wild Honey, Septimus, Big Snipes, Kayuntae Ming, and more.

This will run from 11am until 4pm on the last Sunday of the month.

The Office of the Ombudsman for Bermuda welcomes Dr. Victor O. Ayeni to our shores and invites you to attend a public address on the topic Ombudsman in Everyday Life on Thursday, January 21st.
Dr. Ayeni was the keynote speaker at the official opening of the Bermuda Ombudsman’s Office 10 years ago and will be speaking from 5.30pm at Bermuda National Library.
Dr. Ayeni is the Director of Governance and Management Services International, a UK-based training and consultancy firm dedicated to advancing the quality of public sector governance in developing countries and transitional democracies (www.gmsiuk.com). He has over 35 years experience in governance and international development, covering about 50 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, North America, and the Pacific.
He has been Director of Governance and Institutional Development of the Commonwealth Secretariat, London, and before that, Deputy Director and Lead Adviser in Governance and Public Management. Before joining the Commonwealth, Prof Ayeni lectured in universities in South Africa, Botswana and Nigeria as well as served briefly in the Ondo State Civil Service of Nigeria. He has been consultant to several governments and a host of international and bi-lateral development agencies.
Prof Ayeni is an accomplished international development and public sector management scholar and practitioner. He is a well known international authority on the Ombudsman and related Oversight institutions. His pioneering work helped positioned the Commonwealth Secretariat as a leading technical player in this area. He is widely published with some 15 books and over 160 papers on various aspects of Governance and Public and Development Management to his credit. He has been member of the Editorial Advisory Board of The International Ombudsman Journal based in Alberta, Canada, and, until lately, Editor of the African Journal of Public Administration and Management.
Prof. Ayeni holds a PhD in Public Administration.

With another amazing International Race Weekend behind us, one of the next events on the running calendar is the Butterfield & Vallis 5k on Sunday, February 7th
The race starts and finishes at Butterfield & Vallis on Woodlands Road, kicking off at 9am with the Primary and Middle School boys and girls running the 2.7k route and at 9.30am the Senior School students and adults will run the 5k route. Walkers will start right behind the runners.
Steven DeSilva and his incredible Bermuda Timing team will once again be doing the chip timing. Participants will have plenty of time to compete, enjoy some snacks, watch the prize giving and still be home in plenty of time to watch the game.
This event is promoted and organised by Butterfield & Vallis, assisted on race day by the Bermuda Union of Teachers, and sanctioned by the BNAA. Proceeds from this event will go towards sending young athletes to the CUT Biennial Student Athletic Championships.
The main draw prizes are 2 pedal bikes from Winners’ Edge and Sportseller gift certificates.
The first 900 participants will receive a t-shirt and goodie bag, and the first 900 finishers will receive a water bottle.
Entry fees are $22 for 18 and unders, $15 for Primary and Middle School students (who don’t pay the $7 BNAA fee), $27 for members and $32 for all others.
Entry forms are available at the Sportseller and at both Butterfield & Vallis locations and should be handed in no later than 4.45pm on February 3rd. Her parents, who rely on her as their ears and mouth in the outside world, take the news badly. Paula, who hates the idea of betraying her parents and her brother, goes through a painful dilemma…

The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society (BMDS) proudly presents its latest production Stick Fly, opening on Thursday, February 11th.
In this dramatic comedy, the affluent African-American LeVay family is gathering at their Martha’s Vineyard home for the weekend, and brothers Kent and Flip have each brought their respective ladies home to meet the parents for the first time. Tensions flare as race, class and family become prime conversation topics. Then, when a phone call reveals a family secret, everything unravels. By the end of the weekend, lives have been turned upside-down and a family is left to reassemble the pieces.
Showtime is at 8pm each night and the show will run from Thursday, February 11th until Saturday, February 13th and then from Thursday, February 18th until Saturday, February 20th.
Can’t decide which night to go? On Opening Night on February 11th, there will be a special beach-themed party. From 7pm, you are invited to come dressed to impress and sip a summer cocktail or two before the show.

The Church Girls’ Brigade and Boys’ Brigade are holding their popular fundraising Valentine’s Fair and Car Wash at St. Paul’s Church Hall on Saturday, February 13th.
From 10am until 4pm, you can browse stalls with include baked goods, books, DVDs, “Nearly New” goods, plants, White Elephant and more. Lunch will also be offered the usual delicious homemade soups, chili, hotdogs, codfish balls and chicken wingettes.
The Car Wash is $15 for small and regular sized cars and $20 for large cars and vans.
All funds raised are used to run the Boys and Girls Brigade programmes.

World Thinking Day is celebrated on February 22nd each year and is a special day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world. To celebrate, there will be a special Girlguiding Thinking Day Service and Parade in Bermuda on Sunday, February 21st.
The Girlguiding Units will parade along Church Street from City Hall to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity for the service at 3pm. After the service, at around 4pm, there will be a March Past where the salute will be taken by the Island Commissioner on the Cathedral Church steps. Units will then proceed to the Flag Pole on Front Street for the lowering of the Guide World Flag and the playing of Taps.
At around 5pm, units will march back to City Hall for dismissal.
The 2016 Ariel Re Bermuda Sevens will be on Friday and Saturday, March 18th and 19th.
An official event of Bermuda Rugby and Bermuda Tourism, the tournament brings the very best in high school and college rugby to the Bermuda National Sports Centre, Bermuda’s premier sporting event venue.
The inaugural two-day sevens tournament will feature pool play on Friday with championship matches culminating on the Saturday.
There is no admission fee.

Now in its 18th year of junior races, the 2016 KPMG Round the Grounds Race will be on Sunday, March 20th.
Held at the Botanical Gardens in Paget, this special event is just for younger runners, aged 4 to 18 years old. The first race starts at 1pm with the 4 year olds. Children’s activities will be provided by Masterworks and refreshments are available.
