June 1st, 2016: Bermuda Events Update

Morning Kids!

page

It seems like only a few weeks ago that we were all saying how we couldn’t wait for summer.  Well, guess what – it’s finally here!  Bit of a monster post for you all this week – here’s what’s happening in Bermuda in June and beyond!

0601 Ducking Reenactment

Watch Bermuda’s history come to life at a Ducking Re-enactment from Mondays to Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the summer.

During this light-hearted historical re-enactment from 12.30pm in King’s Square, you can see the St. George’s Town Crier conduct an 18th century trial, showing how offenders were publicly punished, including the ducking of a nagging wench.

This event will run until October 31st and is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact the Visitor Information Centre at 297-0556.

0601 First General Assembly Reenactment

Hear about the first laws of Bermuda and laugh along with a few town gossips at the First General Assembly Re-enactment on Wednesdays throughout the summer.

Held at 12.45pm in Town Hall, directly following the Ducking Re-enactment, you will be transported back to August 1620 when Governor Butler has just held the 1st General Assembly meeting.

This event will run until October 31st and is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact the Visitor Information Centre at 297-0556.

0602 Death by Disco

The show is based on a 70’s Disco Dance Competition where the rivalry is fierce, so fierce that….well, we can not tell you everything.  This will be from 7pm at Grotto Bay Beach Resort, where you can dine, laugh, dance, mingle, and have great fun in a safe environment, with an all-star Bermudian cast.

The cost is $80 per person, including a four-course meal, complimentary swizzle and entertainment.  Seats are very limited.

Death by Disco will continue weekly throughout the summer.

0602 Ocean Vet Night Sharks

The latest in the BUEI Talks series is a screening of Ocean Vet Episode 8: Night Sharks on Thursday, June 2nd.

Locals say you shouldn’t swim in the sea at night – Neil and his team set out to understand why.  Watch Neil complete a series of dangerous night dives in potentially shark-infested waters.

Follow Neil and his team as they perform a surgical procedure to implant an acoustic tag in the abdomen of a juvenile tiger shark in a bid to reveal how often these animals return close to Bermuda’s shores at night.

This mission proves to be one of the teams toughest yet, testing their nerves and stamina to its absolute limits.

Ocean Vet is a natural history series like no other. Narrated by Academy award winning actor and producer, Michael Douglas, this incredible series follows the exploits of English vet Dr. Neil Burnie and his Ocean Vet team. The evening will feature an introduction by an Ocean Vet crew member, airing of the new episode, followed by a Q&A.

The lecture will start in the Tradewinds Auditorium at 7.30pm on each evening.  Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event.  Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar and the full menu will be available from 6pm – please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount and note that it cannot be combined with any other special offers.  For dinner reservations call 295-4207.

0609 Leroyfest Within

Leroy the violin, Taylor Rankin and drummer Dwight Hart along with their collaborative creator colleagues invite you to explore 5 different worlds throughout June at Leroyfest 2016, starting on Saturday, June 4th.  The boys will bring you into the journey they’ve been on out on the road and into the imagination and weirdness of Rankin and Leroy. Experience their unique groove, see violin Leroy do his infamous vinyl scratch and soulfully scream as Taylor manipulates his voice from accents to styles around the world.  You will for sure find yourself skankin to the violin like you’ve never before. At the core of each experience is a live show, but each event is a mini festival on its own dedicated and curated around a theme, playing with your five senses. Yes indeed, imagine food paired with your musical performance as art unfolds with a scent to match the installations you can touch and explore. Come delight in Bermuda’s most intimate and delightful escape from the everyday.

  • Submerge yourself as local creators perform together in a celebration of our oceans at Leroyfest: Waves and Wonder on Saturday, June 4th.  Living in Bermuda, it is a rare day when we don’t catch a glimpse of the ocean. However, too often we are all guilty of not stopping to pause to soak in the beauty that surrounds us.  Therefore, it is fitting that Leroyfest 2016 opens with a show designed to honour our oceans and sea creature friends.  Doors open at 6pm, with the first show by Taylor Rankin and his violin Leroy at 7pm and the second at 9.30pm. You are advised to plan to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the show to enjoy the festivities. Festivities will also continue for about 30 minutes after each show.  This show is kid-friendly, so you can bring the family.  Come early, park, ride in on the adventure shuttle and enjoy the exploration of human installations and funky creatures roaming the Bermuda Aquarium grounds. Your ears, eyes and taste buds shall be stimulated.  Parking at Aquarium grounds is limited, so they recommend parking at Whitney, where a free nature-exploration shuttle to the show will set the tone for an evening of surprises.  Tickets are $55, or $35 for under-18s, and available from www.pTix.bm or 278-1500.

  • Descend into a hidden netherworld within the caves of Grotto Bay where a sensory soul wash awaits, courtesy of Taylor Rankin and his violin Leroy at Leroyfest: Within on Thursday and Saturday, June 9th and 11th.  As you emerge and untie knots within, your senses will be brought to life with beachside performances and a Leroyfest custom menu dining experience.  Doors open at 6pm and cave shows will be at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm.   Space is limited so tickets should be booked ahead of time.  Beach shows are at 9.15pm and 10.15pm and are open to all attendees.  A spectacle at the beach will awaken your soul as you enjoy the shadows of the fire.  If you are attending the first show, you are invited to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to enjoy their tasty street foods before preparing for your cave descent.  The Leroyfest magical world will have a festival atmosphere and includes street-food stands, Activityville, Leroy’s favorite drinks and a Zen Zone with massage, henna and bean bags. You are encouraged to show up with an empty stomach!  This is a kid-friendly show so you can bring your whole family.  From 6pm until 9.45pm, limited curated dining will be open for those who want to sit down and enjoy a 3 course menu at a cost of $50.  Tickets are $55, or $35 for under-18s, and available from www.pTix.bm or 278-1500.

  • Meet violin Leroy and his human Taylor up close and personal at Leroyfest: Intimate on Wednesday, June 22nd.  This show is an invitation to experience their process with each other through foreign world journeys, emotional discoveries, musical creations, collaboration and improvisation.  From 7.30pm, the Bermuda National Gallery becomes the setting for an intimate moment where practices of the enigmatic Leroy will be uncovered and your soul can dive into the depths of a messy yet very rewarding world of creation.  Tickets are $55 for adults, $35 for children, and available from www.pTix.bm.

  • An ode to our dear Bermudian soil and the people upon it, Leroyfest heads outside to bridge the gap between human and nature at Leroyfest: Salt of the Earth on Friday, June 24th.  The Botanical Gardens provides fertile ground for reconnecting with our roots reimagining our stories.  From 7pm, you can explore the collaborative installations, delicious earthly treats and a myriad of performers at this thoughtful and revealing show.  Early birds get to explore and taste all this show has to offer!  Tickets are $55 for adults, $35 for children, and available from www.pTix.bm.

  • In the belly of our island’s metropolis lies an outstanding location that one easily could fail to notice. The scenery of Hamilton becomes the host for the final installment of Leroyfest 2016, where you will delve into the folds of uncertainty at Leroyfest: Hidden Spaces on Saturday, June 25th.  From 7pm, this is where you come to dance, to listen, to lose self in the awe of the city. Surprise will be the guide, the only rule is to trust, and embrace the wonder that is change. Come ready to move!  Pay close attention to your email. One day in advance, the location will be announced by email. Come ready for a walk, a dance and for a show of interaction and improvisation with the Leroyfest performers.  Tickets are $55 for adults, $35 for children, and available from www.pTix.bm.
