It’s finally May – the month when we can get back to beach days and ocean swims! And if that’s not enough for you, there has been plenty added to the Bermuda calendar since last week to keep you occupied.

BUEI and ACEA present The 35th America’s Cup with Tucker Thompson on Thursday, May 4th.
The America’s Cup, sailing’s pinnacle event, is the oldest and arguably the most difficult trophy in the world to win. For the first time in its history, the 166 year old competition will be hosted in Bermuda. Tucker Thompson, the official Public Host of the 35th America’s Cup, will present an informative and entertaining, multi-media presentation highlighting the Cup’s storied history including the dramatic comeback of AC34, an overview of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, a look at the six competing teams, and what to expect in Bermuda during the upcoming competition from May 26th through June 27th.
Tucker Thompson is the official Public Host of the 35th America’s Cup. A veteran sailing commentator, Thompson has hosted over 1,500 sailing shows on T2PTV and live TV and covered the America’s Cup on TV since the 2007 Cup in Valencia, Spain. He is a national award winning TV and video host, producer, and public speaker, and also a former champion sailor during the 2000 America’s Cup in New Zealand.
The lecture starts at 7pm. Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event. Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar with Sushi Happy Hour prices on selected sushi and drinks available until 6.30pm. The full menu will be available from 6pm. Tickets are $20 for BUEI members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students. Tickets are non-refundable within 24 hours of the event.

The Senior Line Dancing Group from the Bermuda College and the Pembroke Community Club invite you to come on out and enjoy an evening of Family Line Dancing in the Square on Thursday, May 4th.
From 7pm in King’s Square, St. George’s, they will dance to the favourites and there will be instruction for some of the lesser known dances.
There is no cover charge and all are encouraged to come out and enjoy the occasion with them.

Back by popular demand, Chilled and Shaken: The Closing of Hubie’s will be screened on Thursday and Friday, May 4th and 5th.
Screening at 7pm at The Leopards’ Club on each of the evenings, the closing of Hubie’s Bar was captured on film in May 2010. The film is about 65 mins long and contains an opening tribute to a few musicians followed by the magic of the closing night of an iconic jazz club in Bermuda.
Admission is free.

BUEI Films presents a screening of Balanchine’s Jewels on Saturday, May 6th.
Now celebrating its 50th year, George Balanchine’s sparkling ballet still shines with all the brilliance of the gemstones that inspired it. This has already shown live in cinemas around the world, and you can see a clip of excerpts from this same ‘live’ production here: http://www.roh.org.uk/showings/jewels-live-2017. With music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, performed by the world-famous Royal Opera Orchestra, this is sure to be a visual and audio feast for the senses.

Have a fun-filled evening while raising money for a good cause at St. David’s Variety Bingo Night on Saturday, May 6th.
Doors to Clearwater Middle School will open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. There will also be food, snacks and drinks available for purchase on the night.
The cost is $5 per bingo card or $12 for 3 bingo cards. There is no requirement to purchase tickets or reserve seating in advance so you can just show up on the night. Part of the proceeds raised will be donated to the Bermuda Cancer & Health Centre as part of Relay for Life 2017,

Promising to be a must for athletes, coaches, schools and parents, A Gold Medal Event will take place on Saturday, May 6th.
From 8pm in the Fairmont Southampton’s Poinciana Ballroom, Olympic Gold Medalist and NY Times Best Selling Author, Dominique Moceanu, a Champion for young athletes, will give a lecture with Q&A before signing autographs and posing for photos. All ages are welcome.

Calling all moms and daughters/sons – you are invited to join MIX for a family-friendly art event at Mother’s Day MIX: Paint Workshop with Mom on Sunday, May 14th.
From 2pm until 4.30pm at Bermuda Society of Arts, you can paint a beautiful Mother’s Day themed painting of a mother bird with her babies, on a shared 16×20 canvas.
MIX it up and make Mother’s Day a creative and memorable one at this fun 2.5 hour instructional workshop, which includes all art supplies and pastries. It is suitable for beginners and children over 5 years old, who must be supervised.

St. Peter’s, Their Majesties Chappell, invite you to a Festive Choral Evensong on Sunday, May 14th.
From 6pm, Rooted in Faith: The Contribution of Black Anglicans to the Church in Bermuda will celebrate the Ministry of The Rev’d William Charles Trott, from 1861 until May 14th, 1933.

For first-time beginners and those with limited experience, The Yoga Centre are offering Beginner’s Yoga, a 12-week course starting on Tuesday, May 16th.
From 5.30pm until 7pm, the course is designed to provide a thorough introduction of yoga asanas, breathing practices and deep relaxation. Traditional poses will be adapted for individual body types and needs. The course will teach students how to establish a steady, comfortable practice and will explore the benefits of each pose to determine how best to incorporate them into their personal practice.
The cost is $260 for the 12-week course.

Promising family fun for all, the Corporation of St. George invites you to come out and enjoy their Friday Evening Summer Series 2017 from Friday, June 2nd.
From 6.30pm in King’s Square, this will include a mixture of Games Nights, Movie Nights and other events. Food vendors will also be on hand. The series will continue weekly until September 1st, with the exception of June 16th and 30th, and August 4th.
June 2nd will be Movie Night, June 9th will be Games Night, June 23rd will be Music / Line Dancing, July 7th will be Movie Night, July 14th will be Games Night, July 21st will be Cup Match Extravaganza, July 28th will be Music / Line Dancing, August 11th will be Movie Night, August 18th will be Games Night, August 25th will be Music / Line Dancing, and the finale on September 1st will be the End of Summer Event. On Movie Nights, the movie will start at 8.30pm but there will be musical entertainment beforehand.

Front Street transforms into a fiery summer night of adult entertainment and fun at Bonfires and BBQs on Thursdays, June 8th and 22nd.
From 7pm until 11pm on Front Street, between Burnaby and Parliament Streets, be prepared to dance the night away with sounds from a live band. As the moon rises, the fire will begin with Rock Fire Productions’ hot performances to light the street up in flames.
Bonfires will be scattered along Front Street, with roasting marshmallows, S’mores and a variety of tasty snacks, some slightly infused with liquor, on sale. A variety of vendors with unique items available for purchase will be on hand to fulfill your shopping desires. Step up your game with the help of iSpike Bermuda Summer Volleyball Clinics, starting on Monday, July 3rd.
iSpike Bermuda is Bermuda’s newest volleyball talent development organisation, with the goal of helping Bermuda’s volleyball players master fundamentals, develop proper mechanics and gain game play experience. Their clinics are co-ed, and open to players, ages 12 and up, of all ability levels. Teams are encouraged to sign up so they can be developed to work as a unit during team and tournament play.
Highlights include: training under experienced coaches and players; five hours of daily instruction; players grouped by age and ability level; skill development/team play/tournaments; and an iSpike Bermuda Volleyball T-shirt (must be paid in full by June 1st, 2017).
The Clinics will be run by Sonia Romero, a former college volleyball player who is a spouse of a Bermudian and new to the island. She earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Physical Education from Florida International University and is a National Board Certified Teacher in Physical Education, with over 20 years of experience in education. Sonia has built and established successful middle school and high school programs and volleyball camps in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
There will be two separate week-long Summer Clinics at CedarBridge Academy, which will run from Monday to Friday, July 3rd to July 7th or from July 10th to 14th. From 9am until 3pm each day, there will be a focus on Skills and Tournament Play.
From 9am until noon on Tuesday, July 18th, they will offer a One-Day Serving and Passing Clinic, also at CedarBridge.
The Summer Clinics cost $275 for the week, while the One-Day Serving and Passing Clinic is $55.
