All of you locals will be VERY familiar with what the Cup Match Classic is all about but some newbies or tourists out there might be wondering why there is all this fuss over a game of cricket.
The Thursday is officially Emancipation Day and the Friday is Somer’s Day. On the surface, Cup Match is a cricket game played on a two-day public holiday on the Thursday and Friday before the first Monday in August. This means that for 2017, it is on Thursday, August 3rd and Friday, August 4th. It is much more than just a cricket game though and, when combined with the weekend, becomes a four-day celebration of all things Bermudian.
Cup Match pits the East of the Island, St. George’s, against the West, Somerset, and alternates venues every year. 2017 will be played at at the Wellington Oval in St. George’s and next year will be at Somerset Cricket Club. You will be able to spot St. George’s fans by their light blue and dark blue attire while Somerset will be in red and blue.
Even those who aren’t fans of cricket attend the game from 10am until 6pm each day to experience this uniquely Bermudian experience, soak in the carnival atmosphere, local food and drinks, see the outrageous fashions and to try their luck at gambling on the Crown & Anchor tables (only legal during Cup Match).
Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for children aged 5 to 12.
For more information, contact St. George’s Cricket Club on 297-0374, or stgeorgescc@ibl.bm.
