Morning Boys and Girls!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! Mine had its ups and downs. There’s nothing like a really good downpour to let you know that you have a leak in your roof. On the plus side, a temporary indoor swimming pool is kinda fun.. Anyway, here are the latest BDA events:

They outnumber humans a million to one, there are 10,000 types known, and their total weight equals that of the human race.  Not my favourite creatures (anything that tries to steal my chocolate gets put on my List of Enemies immediately) but you can’t deny that they are fascinating – Ants: Little Creatures Who Run The World is the next film showing in Bermuda National Library’s Get REEL Wednesday Documentary Film Series.  This will be screened tonight at 5.15pm in the meeting room – here’s the flyer!

Charlar, the Spanish Club, presents their second Noche de Cine (Night of Cinema) tomorrow at 6pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at Bermuda High School for Girls on Richmond Road. The chosen film is the Spanish-French drama Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother), which is rated R and will have English subtitles.  For entry to the film, a $5 donation is suggested, with proceeds going to Bermuda High School for Girls. For more information, see their website at charlarbermuda.wordpress.com or email charlarbda@gmail.com.

To mark the visit of Gonzalo from Chakana Wines, Discovery Wines we will be throwing an Asado, or Argentine BBQ, in his honour on Thursday, June 28th.  This will be at 7pm at Mad Hatters with four courses of Argentine food and wines from Chakana.  The cost is $100 per person and you can reserve your spot by calling Mad Hatters at 297-6231.

The next Wine Class from Discovery Wines  will be on Saturday, June 30th at Harry’s from 10am until noon with a focus on the varietals and the geography of Washington State and Oregon. The cost is $35 per person and includes wines for tasting and handouts.

You are invited to bring the whole family to enjoy all the fun of the fair as Mount Saint Agnes Academy (MSA) Bazaar presents Nursery Rhymes on Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th. From 10am until 10pm, you can enjoy various games, the Super Slide, bingo, baked goods, plants and refreshments. Raffle tickets are available from any student or at the School for $10, with prizes including a Kia Rio Car, Nickelodeon Cruise, Kymco People S 125 and Movie 150cc Motorcycles. Admission is $4 or free for children under 5 – here’s the flyer!

  • As a celebration of the diversity in Bermuda, there will be a free community event at Royal Naval Dockyard dedicated to the things that unite us (music, food, art and entertainment) rather than the things that divide us. CultureFest: Unity in the Community is a national festival created by Bermudians in the 1970s in which visitors and residents from all ethnic groups will participate and embrace without controversy.   From noon until 9pm on Sunday, June 17th and Monday, June 18th **UPDATE: This has been postponed until Saturday, July 21st and Sunday, July 22nd**, there will be live entertainment, international food court, a traditional Bermudian Village and a cultural and visual arts exhibit.  For more details, visit www.bermudaculturefest.com – here’s the flyer!

  • Ferrari Bar at LV’s is no more as Margarita’s Grill will be opening on Tuesday, June 19th!  This is a new margarita and beer bar on Bermudiana Road, which will be open from 5pm until 10pm, Monday to Saturday.  They’ll be offering Sam Adams on tap, Margaritas by the pitcher and buckets of beer – here’s the flyer!

  • The Association of Canadians in Bermuda will be holding their annual Canada Day Beach Party at Warwick Long Bay on Saturday, June 30th.  From noon until 5pm, there will be cake, volleyball and, of course, the national anthem.   Membership is $15 and includes free lunch and beverages. If interested in volunteering, contact volunteer@canadians.bm or see their website at www.canadians.bm.  If you were at home, this would be followed by  a French translation but I can’t be bothered, sorry – here’s the flyer!

  • The Bermuda Rugby Football Union (BRFU) Annual Dinner for 2012 will be at 7pm on Saturday, June 30th at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.  The dinner is in support of the current youth, kids and schools initiatives started by the BRFU in the past year or so and there will also be an auction of rugby memorabilia to raise further funds. Guest speakers are Lewis Moody MBE (World Cup Winner and former England Captain) and Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi. Tickets cost $125 for BRFU members, $150 for non-members, and are available from dinner@brfu.bm – here’s the flyer!

  • Golfers, you’ll be spoiled for choice on Saturday, June 30th at the New Beginnings Golf Classic at Fairmont Southampton! This is in support of the New Beginnings $1 Million Campaign, with all proceeds going towards funding education grants for at risk youth and funding the return of the MIRRORS Community Programme for 19 to 24 year old males. There are three different options and two different events on offer. First of all is the Captain’s Choice Tournament, where you can choose an 8am or 1pm shotgun start. The afternoon event is restricted to teams of three registered entrants as one MIRRORS young person will be included per team after participating in a morning golf clinic. If you were a previous attendee of NTDIB Neon, you’ll know how much fun night golf is. At 9pm (shotgun start) there will be a Night Golf Tournament run on two 9-hole circuits. The entry fees are $100 per player for the Captain’s Choice morning afternoon events (includes green fee and cart) or $75 per player for Night Golf (walking only, golf carts don’t have headlights, and special glow-in-the-dark golf balls will be provided).  If you want to do more than one event, great news, there are deal bundles! For $150, you can do one of the Captain’s Choice (am or pm) plus Night Golf or participate in all three for $225. Registration is online at www.ptix.bm and the deadline is Saturday, June 23rd.

  • Hola Hispanophones, Charlar will be hosting Hora Feliz (Happy Hour) at Rumbar from 5.30pm on the first Thursday of each month, beginning tomorrow, Thursday, June 7th.  Charlar is a social group for anyone who is passionate about Spanish language and culture and aims to bring together people across Bermuda who enjoy speaking Spanish (fluently or slowly!) on a regular basis.  More information on the event, and about the group in general, can be found on their website at http://charlarbermuda.wordpress.com/ or by emailing them directly at charlarbda@gmail.com.

  • Dig out your very best hat and pearls – MAMA is hosting a High Tea in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Sunday, June 10th from 3pm until 6pm at Tucker’s Point Clubhouse. The cost is $55 per person and you can RSVP to Danielle at events@mama.bm.

Morning Kids!

Hope you all had a wonderful Bermuda Day last week – how many of you braved the water?  The water that fell from the sky was enough for me – hopefully we’re going to have a little run of good weather so that I can work on turning my usual lovely shade of lobster-red..    Here are some more Bermuda events to look forward to:

  • Ferrari Bar at LV’s are hosting a Charity Happy Hour in support of Tomorrow’s Voices this coming Friday, June 1st. From 4.30pm until 9pm, you can enjoy drinks at Happy Hour Prices, complimentary nibbles and a roast beef carving station. There will also be a raffle draw with tickets for purchase at a cost of $3 for one or $4 for ten – here’s the flyer!

  • Forget The Avengers, the alliance of the summer is the combined might of The Youth Library, Bermuda National Gallery, Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, Bermuda National Trust and The Bermuda Botanical Society who have joined forces to offer Whistle Stop Adventure on Saturday, June 2nd.  Kids aged between 7 and 10 are invited to climb aboard the Bermuda Train to explore Bermuda History. The fun starts at 9am at the Youth Library and the children will have a tour, participate in an activity and learn about their surroundings at each venue before ending at the Botanical Gardens at 3.30pm. Lunch is included and the cost is $15.  For more information, contact 295-0487 – here’s the flyer!

  • The One Bermuda Alliance is hosting a Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 2nd at Mullet Bay Park, St. George’s.  From 11am until 6pm, you can enjoy a variety of entertainment, including Fun Castles, a dunking stool (you’ll get the opportunity to vote which MP Candidate or Senator will get dunked), local artists, a tug of war competition, a sack bag race and a three-legged race.  Admission is free, food costs $2 and drinks and games cost $1, with proceeds to benefit the St. George’s Foundation and the Beyond Sports Bermuda Rugby charities.  For more information, contact info@oba.bm or 294-3264 – here’s the flyer!

  • The Adult Services Film Selection at Bermuda National Library this week is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with showtimes at 11am and 2pm on Saturday, June 2nd. All are welcome but they suggest you get there early since spaces are limited – here’s the flyer!

  • Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Education Officer, Rhonda Smith-Simmons, will be hosting Male Cancer Checked Out, a free health presentation on Thursday, June 7th.  This will be at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre at 46 Point Finger Road, Paget from 5.45pm.  As the name suggests, the talk will be focusing on male cancers (for men and women), the risks, the recommended screenings, how to recognise early signs and symptoms, and what to do if you have concerns.   For more information, or to register, contact info@chc.bm or 236-0949 – here’s the flyer!

  • To encourage a healthy start to the retirement of their President, Gerald Simons, The Argus Group invites you on a Bermuda National Trust Guided Nature Walk  on Saturday, June 9th.  The 45 minute tour starts at the Berry Hill entrance of the Botanical Gardens and is open to everyone.  Refreshments will be provided after the walk – here’s the flyer (it says that the deadline to register was Monday but you can still join)!

  • It’s that time of year again when Flanagans Onions F.C. (the team formerly known as M.R. Onions F.C.) bring us some swigging and sailing shenanigans.  Their Euro 2012 Booze Cruise will be on Saturday, June 9th and, to get everyone in the mood for the European Championships, they invite you to come dressed in your favourite football (soccer) jersey.  The boat departs Albuoys Point at 7.30pm, returning at 10.30pm and includes a live DJ and open bar.  Tickets are $50 and available from cosgravealan@gmail.com – here’s the flyer!

  • Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will be having their annual Purple Tag Days event on Friday, June 15th and Saturday, June 16th and they invite you to spread the word by wearing purple.  The purpose of this event is to raise funds for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre while raising awareness that many cancers are preventable, early detection saves lives and that support for survivors, family and friends is available.   For more information on how to take part, visit www.chc.bm – here’s the flyer!

  • Whether you’re of Caribbean descent, or just enjoy the food and music from that part of the world, you won’t want to miss the West Indian Association (Bermuda)’s Dine & Dance Around D Caribbean party on Saturday, June 23rd at the Bermuda College Cafetorium.  This event will include a cash bar, tasters from 7pm until 9.30pm, followed by dancing to music from DJ LaMontagne until 1am.  Tickets are $25 and are available from all members of the WIA Executive Committee or from westindianber@yahoo.com – here’s the flyer!

  • The Somerset Branch of the Bermuda Police Service are looking for your sponsorship as they attempt the impressive feat of Rowing One Million Metres for Charity at Sandys 360 from Thursday, July 12th.  Organiser Sergeant Derek Berry and 11 other members of the Somerset Police, will be broken into groups of four members. The groups will alternate rowing every eight hours, with each member rowing for a half hour, and will row continuously until they reach their goal.  One million metres is almost 65 miles and they expect to have completed this by the afternoon of Sunday, July 15th – taking around 3 and a half days.  Spectators and supporters are welcome during normal opening hours and there may also be festivities on the launch day – more details to follow!  If you’d like to sponsor, the participating officers have pledge sheets, as well as a general pledge sheet at Sandys 360 Front Desk and at the Somerset Police Station.
