Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend – here is the latest rundown of Bermuda events to keep you going until the next one:
Muse Rooftop Skybar presents Muselectric, the only underground electronic party in Bermuda, on Friday, May 31st. From 9pm until 3am, this event will feature music courtesy of DJ Tanz from Chewstick Lounge and DJ Daesmith. There is no cover charge.
In honour of National Cancer Survivors Day, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre would like to offer all survivors a 10% discount at their Boutique on Friday May 31st between 7.30am and 5pm.
Looking for a way to kiln time in an arty way on Saturday mornings? The new Introduction to Pottery Workshop is a course of six classes focusing on hand building techniques. This is for adults over the age of 18 and each class will run from 9.30am until 11.30am on Saturday mornings from June 1st until July 6th. The cost of the course is $250, which includes all supplies and firing. The class size limited so register early. For more information, or to register, call Kimberley on 338-0140.
Paws & Claws Pet Supplies will be celebrating their Grand Opening and 2nd Anniversary with a special one day sale with 15% off store wide including live freshwater fish and live birds. This will run from 10am until 6pm on Saturday, June 1st. For more details, call 536-5704.
It’s a Family A’fair, the Sandys Secondary Middle School Annual Fair will be on Saturday, June 1st. From 2pm until 10pm, you can expect all the usual fairground favourites, including burgers, hot dogs, cotton candy and a fish fry, with face painting, golf, a dunk booth, fun castle, and much more also on offer. Entertainment will be courtesy of Sandys Showtime Drumline, M2 and M3 Bands, the Staff Band and former student Delijah Symonds, who is raising funds to join the Up With People organisation. The raffle will be drawn at 9pm and the raffle tickets cost $5 each. Over $10,000 worth of prizes are up for grabs, including two 125cc scooters, Kindle Fire, iPad Mini, digital camera, hotel stays, grocery vouchers and much more. Bermuda’s best dancers will be competing for $5000 in prizes on Saturday, June 1st in the Bermuda version of So You Think You Can Dance. This will be at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for Performing Arts and contestants will represent a variety of genres, including hip-hop, salsa and modern. Doors open at 7pm and showtime is at 8pm. Tickets cost $50 and are on sale now at HOTT 107.5, Gorham’s, iClick and Music Box.
Night Life Entertainment presents U.O.E.N.O. at Strykz Bowling Lounge on Saturday, June 1st. From 10pm, entertainment will be courtesy of Twin Starr, DJ Keem and G-Money playing reggae, pop, R’n’B , soca and hip hop. This is an over 21 event (ID required) and V.I.P Sections/ Champagne bottle service will be available. The first 15 ladies get in for free, otherwise the cover charge is $15 for ladies, $20 for men. Part proceeds will benefit the Bermuda Sanshou Association.
Will Black and The Crazy Wednesdays are teaming up at Hog Penny on Saturday, June 1st. This will feature Will Black and Mick Ward on vocals and guitars, Keith White on guitars, Gavin Thomason on drums and Jamie Lovell on bass guitar, all performing modern rock favourites for your listening pleasure from 10.30pm until 1am, with no cover charge
You are invited to dress to impress at the official afterparty to the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. 100th Anniversary Gala will be at Rumbar on Saturday, June 1st. From 11am until 3pm, Red Carpet Event will feature entertainment courtesy of DJ Vibez of Lifestyle Ent, as well as a complimentary drink, free photo op and more. Tickets are $25 and available from Bliss Hair & Nail Salon on Kit ‘n’ Caboodle.
Summer Sundays in the Park is back on Sunday, June 2nd, and promises a focus on R&B, Classic and Soul music with the theme Soulful Expressions. This event will feature lots of family-friendly entertainment in Victoria Park from 3pm until 8pm, including a Beyoncé tribute, Prestige, soloists from the Developing Arts Program, Tanaya Christopher,Dem Biez and much more. As usual, there will be a kids’ area with fun castles, face-painting, cotton candy and popcorn. If you don’t want to take your own picnic with you, there will be food vendors available. Admission is free.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, L’Oriental are featuring an Asian & Sushi Lunch Buffet for $29.75 (excluding grats). Limited a la carte items from the regular menu will also be available. For reservations, call 296-4477.
Anyone need to get swimwear-ready for this summer? Yep, me too! Anyway, Fit’n’Firm Water Aerobics classes will be restarting Monday, June 3rd at Warwick Academy Pool and will run Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8pm until 9pm, right up until Thursday, September 19th. The drop-in fee is $20, an 8-class card is $130 and a Season’s Pass for the full period is $400. Archery is a growing sport in Bermuda and you are welcome to be part it. Every Tuesday from 6.30pm until 8pm, you can channel your inner Robin Hood/Katniss Everdeen at an Archery Class at WindReach in Warwick. People of all ages and abilities are welcome but younger shooters should be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $15 per shoot, of which half goes to WindReach. You are invited to encourage your husband, father, brother and any other man who is important in your life to attend a free Men’s Health Screenings event on Thursday, June 6th. This will be from 10am until 5pm at the Seventh-Day Adventist Hall on King Street. The Men’s Health Screening is an initiative targeted toward men over 40 years of age who are uninsured, or who do not visit their doctor on at least an annual basis. Screenings will include blood glucose, blood pressure, body composition, lung function, foot exam and more, with physicians and nutritionists available for brief consultations. The Bermuda IOD Fleet is extending an invitation to anyone interested in sailing an International One Design in this year’s sailing season to come for a sail at their Open Day on Saturday, June 8th. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to try their hand at fleet sailing and everyone is welcome, no experience is necessary. You are invited to bring comfy shoes, sunscreen and rain gear and are welcome to bring a team, a friend or come on your own. Interested sailors should meet at the flagpole on the Terrace of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club between 1pm and 4pm. After your sail, there will be a beer and a burger waiting back on the dock. Dining with a difference will be available on Saturday, June 8th as the Venetian yacht is hosting a Dinner Cruise. The evening will include a gourmet dinner, a welcome glass of prosecco and a dessert buffet at a cost of $195 per person. There are three tables of eight available and you can book all 24 seats or just book two to mix and mingle. The boat will depart Albuoy’s Point at 6.30pm, returning at 10.30pm. The 2013 Deloitte Open Tennis Tournament will be served up at the Pomander Gate Tennis Club from Thursday, June 6th until Saturday, June 15th (rain date is Sunday, June 16th). Events will include Mens & Ladies A & B Singles, Mens & Ladies A & B Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Senior & Super Senior Doubles. Entry forms are available here, at Pomander Gate Tennis Club, The W.E.R. The deadline for entries is at 6pm on Thursday, May 30th and entry forms must be submitted to Pomander Gate Tennis Club, along with the entry fee of $20 for doubles or $25 for singles, or emailed to pgtc@northrock.bm. Since this is a Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association sanctioned event, players must be members to participate or include their membership application and dues with entry. Bermuda Folk Club presents Blues Night at Spanish Point Boat Club from 8pm on Saturday, June 8th. This will feature the return of internationally-acclaimed special guest artist Alice Stuart, legendary Grammy and Handy nominated singer/songwriter. Alice’s first visit was 2 years ago when she played to one of the largest crowds in Folk Club history and the audience insisted on three encores. The cover charge is $15.
We are Climbin’ Jacob’s Ladder, an inspirational, motivational, spiritual mystery written by Dale Butler is back by popular demand on Sunday, June 9th at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. Described by critic Ira Philip as “the best play I have ever seen”, the show had previously sold out everywhere and, as before, will be performed by the Giant Steps Band at 4pm, with an all star cast. The monthly Ciné Club from L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will be showing Delicacy, starring Audrey Tautou and François Damiens, on Tuesday, June 11th at 8pm at BUEI. Tickets are $5 for members, $8 for non-members and $3 students. Full details can be found at www.alliancefrancaise.bm.
Bermuda National Gallery are teaming up with Chewstick to throw a Young Members Party on Friday, June 14th. This will be from 5pm at BNG, City Hall and promises to be a night full of art, music and prizes, featuring student performances by Paper Cutouts, Haz, Essence, Jahmali, Jahroy, DJ Blazian, Marquedelle Rodriguez, HNK, Bryn and many more. This event is free for BNG and Chewstick Student Members and $10 at the door for Non-Student members.
Trying to think of a good gift for Dad? If he enjoys live music then the Ain’t Misbehavin’ Fathers’ Day Concert on Sunday, June 16th could be a good choice. This will be from 4pm at the Leopards’ Club and will feature the Giant Steps Band, Trio and Latosha Codrington. Tickets are $35 and available from Music Box or at the door. Proceeds are in aid of the Giant Steps performance in the Havana International Jazz Festival in December 2013.
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre are hosting a free health presentation for men only on Friday, June 21st. Male Cancer: Checked Out will be from 6pm at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Guest Speaker Dr. Michael O’Leary from Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston will give you the facts about prostate cancer and other male health concerns. You will learn about the risks, the recommended screenings, how to recognize early signs and symptoms, and what to do if you have concerns. Light refreshments will be available. Fort Hamilton will be the setting for an Island Style Extravaganza at Fort Night Fever on Friday, June 21st from 7pm. Starting off with a complimentary Rum Swizzle, you can join in with an optional walking tour through the depths of the Fort (comfortable shoes recommended) led by the energetic Sea Dog Ed. The Vendor Village will offer a variety of Fort Night Fever novelties or authentic Bermuda souvenirs to purchase. The evening will continue with an Open BBQ Buffet and dessert bar. Hosts will serve you complimentary swizzle all evening or you can wander to the full bar and experience a variety of Bermuda Cocktails prepared by Gosling’s mixologists. The live band will perform reggae, calypso, soca and some modern pop to keep you dancing all night long, while a limbo show will challenge you to join in for a crowning of King and Queen of Limbo. L’Alliance Française des Bermudes invite you to join them in celebrating La Fête de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste at Stonehole Bay (next to Chaplin Bay) on Sunday, June 23rd. This is a Quebec and French Canadian National Holiday but they are celebrating it Bermuda-style with a beach party and bonfire from 7pm until 10pm with Quebec music and delicacies such as poutine and ice cider available. You are just invited to bring meat, marshmallows and a BBQ. Entry is free.
