Morning Kids!
So, I have just found out that this week is Everybody Deserves a Massage Week… Not sure how legitimate a holiday this is but, hey, any excuse to either book yourself in for a treatment, or rope a good friend into giving you a rubdown, is fine by me. Here’s the latest listing of things to do in Bermuda once all that massage oil has absorbed:
Bermuda will be joining in the global celebrations to mark Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday on Thursday, July 18th. Madiba will be honoured at the Wesley Methodist Church from 12.30pm until 1.30pm with live performances from Gene Steede, Ryan Durrant, a Community Choir, the Bermuda African Dance Company Drummers, Chewstick, Warwick Gombeys, and more. Whether you’re red and blue or blue and blue, you are invited to dress up in your team colours for Cup Match Salsa on Friday, July 19th. From 9pm in Rumbar, you can represent whichever end of the island that you support, while enjoying and/or dancing to latin music from DJ Magia until midnight. There is no cover charge. The Bermuda Basketball Association is hosting a special screening of the new DreamWorks Animation movie, Turbo, on Saturday, July 20th. The movie will be showing at Liberty Theatre at 10am and tickets are $15, which includes popcorn and a drink. For more information, or to reserve your ticket, call June or Charles on 234-1473. Tickets can also be purchased on the day, subject to availability.
A new product launch, seminar and more await you at the Natural Hair & Beauty Expo on Saturday, July 20th in St. Paul’s Centennial Hall. From 10am until 1pm, this event will feature guest speaker from Atlanta, Tarece Hassell, with seminar participants including My Sereni-Tea, Black Pearl, Orchid Nail Spa, David of Universal Barber and Miguel. Some of Bermuda’s best talent will be performing at Joshua Le May’s Benefit Concert on Saturday, July 20th. This concert will be a fundraiser for Joshua’s medical expenses and will be hosted by Nadanja with live performances from Joy T. Barnum, LaTosha Codrington (Bermuda Idol 2013), Willard Burch (Former Bermuda Teen Idol), Keith Lee, The Unit, Troy Anthony, and many more at the Earl Cameron Theatre in City Hall at 7pm. Tickets are $40 for regular admission, $75 for Patrons, $100 for Donors and are available from www.bdatix.bm.
All ladies have their favourite little black dress that makes them look and feel great so Red Steakhouse and Bar are giving you an excuse to dig it out on Saturday, July 20th. From 10pm until 2am, Red’s exclusive Little Black Dress Party will also be the official launch of their Summer Cocktail Menu with special pricing and music by DJ Siid James. You can also expect mini martini samples between 10pm until 11pm, exclusive giveaways and ladies can find their perfect shade of Red with Christopher Vee, International Make Up Artist. Best of all, there is no cover charge.
Hog Penny present a triple header of rock bands for your listening pleasure from 10.30pm until 1am on Saturday, July 20th. Opening acts will be The Tramp Presidents and Radios In Cars, followed by the main act, Voodoo Wahoo (Will Black, Keith White, Mike Jardine and Jamie Petty), making their performance debut. There is no cover charge.
The creators of the Heineken Wet n’ Wild Party are teaming up again to bring another unique party experience to Bermuda while celebrating the launch of four new vodka flavours. The Smirnoff Experience Foam/Glow Party will be on Saturday, July 20th at Snorkel Park. From 10pm until 3am, you can expect thousands of free glow products, a state-of-the-art foam cannon with foam pit, a mechanical bull, light show, games, giveaways, glow beach balls, professional photography, Ziploc bags for cellphones and music by Young Gunz Sound, New Era, DJ Rusty G, DJ Mark P, DJ Chubb, hosted by Ninja Cutty with a special guest lady host. Dress to get wet and there will also be a prize for the best beach outfit. Advance tickets are $30, more at the door, and are available at Kit n’ Caboodle, Sovereign Jewelers, Mambo, Snorkel Park and event DJs. The July edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be at BUEI on Sunday, July 21st with the documentary Building Hope, showing at 3pm followed by French drama, Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, at 5.15pm. The next edition of the BEPRO Lunch ‘N’ Learn Series will be on the topic of Breaking into the Insurance Industry – Tips from the Pros on Tuesday, July 23rd at the Chamber of Commerce. From 12 noon until 1pm, attendees will learn about the resources available to pursue or enhance a career in insurance and learn about the industry. The expert guest speakers are three very well-respected and top-ranking industry professionals: Catherine Lapsley (Executive Director of the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies), Dawnnelle Walker (Chief Executive Officer of the Bermuda Insurance Institute) and Patrick Tannock (President & Managing Director of XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd), who will share their personal experiences and insight into the industry. This event is free for members or $10 for non-members and a light lunch will be provided. There are limited spaces available but you can secure your spot by RSVP’ing to vwheatley@bcc.bm.
Marks & Spencer and Muse are teaming up to offer a special Wine Pairing Dinner event on Tuesday, July 23rd. The evening will begin at 7pm with a drinks and canapés reception, followed by a four course gourmet dinner, five wine pairings and coffee. Attendees will also receive a 15% discount on 12 mix and match bottles of M&S Wines. BEPRO (Bermuda’s Emerging Professionals) is hosting its annual membership and networking event, Convos & Cocktails, on Thursday, July 25th at Bacardi HQ. Attendees will be able to enjoy the BEPRO signature cocktail and giveaways from 5.30pm until 7.30pm, and members are encouraged to bring along guests who may be interested in joining BEPRO. There’s no need to rush home at 7.30pm though as the fun will continue at Margarita’s Grill with happy hour drink specials and free pasta dishes. Bermudian artist Zoe Dyson will be exhibiting her work of altered photographs in Homer’s Café at Masterworks from Saturday, August 10th. Zoe has been entered in the Charman Prize through Masterworks and she uses her work as a voice for growing concerns in Bermuda. The show will run until September 13th and artwork is available for purchase.
Guest artist Joe La Morte, will soon be exhibiting his scenic oil paintings in his Bermuda-inspired Artist in Residence Exhibit at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. Motivated by scenic views, light and the colours of Bermuda, Joe uses distinct brush strokes, distinctive hues and, an eye for detail to create spectacular pieces. His works will be be showcased and available for purchase in the Rick Faries Gallery with the official opening on Friday, September 13th from 5.30pm until 7pm. Bermudian artist Jill Raine will be exhibiting her watercolours in Homer’s Café at Masterworks from Saturday, September 14th. Her work has been presented to three members of the Royal Family, (Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret) as well as Margaret Thatcher. The show will run until October 17th and artwork is available for purchase.
Crystal Clear Kayaks are running a special offer on their Sunset Tour and Night Encounter from July 24th until July 31st . Based at Daniel’s Head in Sandys, these are clear-bottomed kayaks with LED lights affixed to them for spectacular undersea views.The cost is normally $60 but the special offer is for $45 per person or $35 per person with groups of 8 or more (maximum 20 people per tour).
