Hope you’re all having a good week so far! Fall is just around the corner so you can expect the Bermuda events calendar to start exploding now that the beach and BBQ days are coming to an end. Here’s the latest rundown of what’s coming up:
If you employ a caregiver to look after a loved one, then you will be interested to hear about the seminar that Care@Home Services are hosting on Thurday, August 22nd. You, Your Caregiver & The Employment Act is open to all employers, caregivers and care agents and will be held at the Visitors Centre in the Botanical Gardens at 6pm. The speaker will be Candy Lee Foggo, Labour Relations Officer from the Department of Labour Relations and Workforce Development. This event is free to attend, although spaces are limited. The Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) are bringing back their annual TrashArt Show, Litter-Arti 2013. BSoA have invited artists to stretch their imagination and address the concept of reuse and recycling discarded trash which endangers our fragile Island environment. Entries are welcome from schools, art camps and individual artists, and the deadline to bring in your work is 4pm on Wednesday, August 28th. Here is the entry form. To coincide with this, BSoA are also hosting a family-orientated workshop run by KBB on Saturday, August 24th. From 10am until noon, you will learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle by creating beautiful works of art. The workshop is free but you will have to register using the form here. If you are a junior artist aged between 6 and 17, then you are invited to participate in the Bermuda Feline Assistance Bureau’s 21st Anniversary Celebration Poster Art Competition. Use your creativity and your favourite medium, whether it be paint, pencil or charcoal, to create a poster on the theme, The Importance of Neutering Cats, and not only could you be in with a chance to win great prizes from DNA Creative Shoppe, but your art may be on display in the Edinburgh Gallery at Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA). The entry deadline is 3.30pm, on August 28th. The entry fee is a bag of Whiska’s dry food, any size, which will be donated to feeding stations around the island. Entries are accepted at Dunkley’s Dairy on Vesey Street in Devonshire and will also be accepted on August 28th only at BSoA on the 3rd Floor in City Hall. There are four new exhibits opening on Friday, August 30th at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. The Onions Gallery will be exhibiting the annual TrashArt Show, Litter-Arti 2013, where featured artists will use discarded trash to create their artwork. The Edinburgh Gallery will feature some of the junior artists who entered the Bermuda Feline Assistance Bureau’s 21st Anniversary Celebration Poster Art Competition. Studio A will be exhibiting the work of Kimberley Tucker while Studio B will be showcasing Kocchakorn Marchand & Manuel Palacio. Selena Minors invites you to bring your tents, chairs and coolers to the 4th Annual Causeway BBQ Throwdown and Block Party on Sunday, September 1st. This will be next to Swing Bridge, St. George’s and is a great community event including a BBQ Throwdown, Pie-eating Contest, Best Mechanical Bull-Rider, Funcastles and more. The fun starts at 9am and the BBQ competition starts at 11am, with a variety of categories, including best homemade burger, best ribs, best chicken and best picnic plate. The event is free to attend and the entry fee for BBQ Throwdown applicants is $15. Entry forms are available from Selena’s Snack Shop and the winners will receive cash prizes and bragging rights. A brand new event to highlight the talented piano performers Bermuda has produced will be held at St. Paul A.M.E. Church on Sunday, September 8th. The Bermuda International Piano & Jazz Festival will feature Elizabeth Gumbs, Marvin Pitcher, Sheldon Fox and Conrad Roach, joined by The Six Ripe Loquats of Pond Hill and The Red Cherries of North Rock. This event is organised by Atlantic Publishing House, MyThyme Productions and St. Paul A.M.E., under the distinguished patronage of veteran church musicians, Mrs. Doris Corbin and Mr. Cecil Smith. Billed as an exciting afternoon of music to reach the masses, the concert will start at 4pm and promises to set the foundation for part 2, scheduled for October 20th. The Family Centre Bermuda is once again hosting their ever-popular fund-raising beach concert/party at the Fairmont Southampton Ocean Club beach. The Family Centre’s Beach Bash will be on Friday, October 4th from 7pm until midnight and will include a drinks reception, dinner and wine in a bonfire setting. The musical theme this year is The Girls are Back in Town, featuring the Kennel Boys with a great line up of Bermuda’s most talented female vocalists. Now in its 6th year, the Charman Prize is an annual art prize competition for local artists based in Bermuda. The winner will be revealed on Friday, October 11th with all entries displayed in the Butterfield Gallery at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. This event is open to the public from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and the awards ceremony will begin at 6.30pm. The show will run until January 1st. Internationally celebrated yoga innovator, Sianna Sherman, will be visiting Bermuda to teach a Yoga Retreat at Newstead Belmont Hills from Friday, October 11th until Sunday, October 13th. Nourish Your Body, Mind and Soul through Yoga with Sianna Sherman will comprise of five sessions. The first session on the Friday is Skill in Action (Advanced Practice) from 1pm until 4pm, followed by Mythic Yoga Flow (all levels) from 6pm until 8pm. On the Saturday, Pranic Power (all levels) will be from 10.30am until 1pm and Revolution-Revelation (all levels) will be from 3pm until 5.30pm. The final session will be Agni, The Holy Fire (Intermediate/Advanced) on the Sunday from 10am until 1pm.. All sessions are $80 each, with the exception of Mythic Yoga Flow which is $60. Earlybirds who book before September 27th, can get the entire event at a cost of $300, or $240 for everything except the Friday afternoon session. Calling all artists, Bermuda National Gallery are currently seeking submissions for their 2014 Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Bermuda Art. This year’s theme, View from the Edge, challenges artists to address how the physical reality of an island informs one’s identity. The island edge is at once limitless and limited. How do we transcend restriction or embrace limitation? In what ways are we both bounded and connected, living in confinement and paradise, experiencing insularity and resilience?
