Hope you all had a great holiday and have now fully-recovered. There were definitely many sad post-Cup Match weekend faces on Monday, not to mention the ones who looked like they were positively hanging by a thread! Think that your summer fun is now over? Wrong! Here is the latest round-up of upcoming Bermuda events:
A good excuse for an excursion to the West End, the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard presents its juried members show, Aqua. The show features a variety of craft and art with the theme of Aqua in mind with items also available for sale. The show opened on July 28th and will run until August 22nd. It also includes Art Beyond the Borders of Canvas from featured solo artist Joan Aspinall, who presents the brilliant and dynamic colours of Bermuda on glass, wood and wearable items. The Arts Centre is open from daily between 10am and 5pm and admission is free. For more details, visit www.artbermuda.bm.
More good news for art lovers as there are two new exhibits opening on Friday, August 9th at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. The Onions Gallery and Studios A and B will be exhibiting the 60th Anniversary Invitational Show. This will feature some of Bermuda’s most renowned artists in a collective exhibition. Contributing artists are Rhona Emmerson, David Mitchell, Chris Burville, Ami Zanders, Robert Bassett, Stephen Masters, April Branco and Frank Dublin.The Edinburgh Gallery will be exhibiting Emerging Artists, to showcase those artists who have just begun to exhibit their work and are studying to develop their talents. The opening reception will be from 5pm until 7pm and both exhibits will run until August 27th.
A great opportunity to watch a recent blockbuster under the stars as the Moonlight Movie Series presents the Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation’s Movies Down East on Saturday, August 10th. The movie will be G.I. Joe: Retaliation, rated PG-13, which will be showing at Shelly Bay Field. Movies Down East is sponsored in part by the Bermuda Union of Teachers and will feature a variety of young entertainers during Camparama, an annual showcase of students from all the Government Summer Day Camps hosted by PowerGirl from 6pm. In addition to this, there will be food vendors, gombeys and a KiddieLand with games, rides and activities. The movie will start at 9pm, after the sun goes down. The African Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) Bermuda Foundation invites you to its 1st Annual ADHT Conference Cook Off: Gumbo and Good Times on Saturday, August 10th. This is a fundraiser for their Youth Development Programme, which includes sending students to the 9th Annual ADHT Conference in Lafayette, Louisiana. As a nod to the location of the conference, the cook-off will centre around that signature Louisiana dish, gumbo. Five local chefs (Omari Esdaille, Odinga Hodgson, LeeAnn Mederios, Alfie Eve and Colin Lloyd) will have to impress judges Herbie Bascome, Tenika Eve and Desmond Townsend to win the crown of Bermuda’s Gumbo King or Queen. The competition will be held at Landfall Restaurant from 6.30pm and attendees will also be able enjoy live music and dancing, a cash bar and the opportunity to sample all the gumbos and vote for the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and available from 27th Century Boutique or maxine@adht.bm.
The Jamaican Association (Bermuda) presents their Annual Independence Cruise aboard the MV Bermudian on Saturday, August 10th. The boat will have two pickup points, departing Dockyard at 8pm, and departing Albouy’s Point at 9pm, returning at midnight. The ticket price includes a full meal, cash bar, and music by Magnum Force, Jugglin J and After Dark, with a live performance from reggae artist Tinga Stewart. Tickets are $50 and available from Kit n Caboodle, Jamaican Grill and Fish and Tings. Part proceeds will benefit the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust and the Kingston Public Hospital.
Ideal for young thespians, Horizons Bermuda presents an Acting Summer Camp from Monday, August 12th until Friday, August 30th. Suitable for ages 10 to 18, this camp will take place at the Sabor Dance School Studio at the Old Berkeley where instructor Kaurie Daniels will improve your child’s public speaking, self expression, acting skills and interpersonal skills. The 2013 Summer Softball Season is set to begin at 6pm on Monday, August 19th and the Bermuda Summer Softball League is inviting all new, current and previous teams to register by August 12th. As usual, games will take place at the Michael Preece Softball Diamond in Bernard Park and all groups are welcome to become a part of the softball community, including corporations, clubs and charities. **UPDATE: This event has been postponed – new details will follow once available** Magical fun for children and adults alike can be found at the Fairmont Southampton’s Mid Ocean Amphitheatre on Saturday, August 17th, courtesy of Ryan Oakes, Conjuror. The kids show will be the matinee performance at 3pm, The Magic of Ryan Oakes, and will feature local talent from the In Motion Dance Studio. The adult show at 7pm, An Evening of Mentalism and Mind Reading, will include brain games using the live audience and local talent from Dem Biez and child star Angelis Hunt. Tickets are $25 for the kids show, $40 for the adult show and are available from www.pTix.bm.
Cobbs Hill Gospel Chapel invite you to their Annual Community BBQ on Saturday, August 17th (rain date of August 24th) from 5pm until 8pm. This will be at Cobbs Hill Gospel Chapel Field, on the corner of Cobbs Hill and the Railway Trail, where you can expect to find food, snowballs, popcorn, games, fun castles, Gombeys, music and entertainment on offer and completely free. From 9.30am until 11.30am in Harley’s at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, you will have the opportunity to eat, network and hear a presentation on Assertive Communication Skills from Lorrie Peniston, a leader in positive psychology. Bermuda Department of Tourism invite you to their outdoor entertainment event, Bermuda Nights at Barr’s Bay Park. This is one of their signature events and aims to showcase Bermuda’s best local entertainers, cultural performers and Bermy food in a stunning outdoor setting to offer a true Bermudian experience, with views of Hamilton Harbour under the stars. The next is Saturday, August 24th, with future dates being September 14th and 28th, October 26th and November 23rd. The evening will run from 8pm until 10.30pm and admission is free. A show that you have a chance of starring in is coming to the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall on Saturday, August 24th. Cyrus the Hypnotist, hosted by Bootsie, will also feature Belly Dancing from Fusion Fitness. Doors open at 8pm and, since there is no assigned seating, it is recommended that you arrive early. After the show, the fun will continue at the after-party at Margarita’s Grill. The next edition of the Bermuda International Film Festival’s BIFFlix Monthly Film Series will be a screening of the film I Give It A Year, starring Rose Byrne, Minnie Driver, Anna Faris, Rafe Spall, Simon Baker and Stephen Merchant, on Sunday, August 25th. Yoga With Tali and Daniel Scott Yoga are teaming up to bring you an introduction to the Yoga of Trust from Friday, September 6th until Sunday, September 8th. AcroYoga Basecamp: Bermuda is open to yogis of all levels and will take place at the Spanish Point Boat Club in Pembroke. AcroYoga is the practice of working in pairs to blend elements of yoga, acrobatics, performance and healing arts. Leading the workshops will be internationally-renowned visiting instructor Daniel Scott, a certified AcroYoga instructor and movement therapist. The first session will be Turn Your World Upside Down: Arm Balances + Inversions on Friday, September 6th from 6pm until 9pm. There will be two sessions on Saturday, September 7th, the first being Roots and Wings: Grounding Down to Rise Up from 10am until 1pm and the second is Open up and Say “Ahhhhh!!”: Backbends and Chest Openers from 3pm until 6pm. The final session, The Deep Exhale: Therapeutic AcroYoga, will be on Sunday, September 8th, from noon until 3pm. The cost is $80 per session, or $280 for all four sessions. If you register by Friday, August 9th, you will be eligible for the Special Earlybird price of $238 for all 4.
