Late night shopping on Fridays are great, but you can’t always make the most of it if you have Christmas parties to attend. Luckily, a group of Queen Street retailers have come to the rescue. Each Wednesday leading up to Christmas, participating retailers along Queen Street and within the Bermudiana Arcade are thanking their customers for all their support during the year with their VIP Corporate Shopping Nights. From 6pm until 8pm, you can enjoy late night shopping with a glass of wine, some refreshments and extraordinary savings. Participating retailers include Daisy & Mac, Daisy’s, All Things Sassy Pet Boutique, Lemon Tree Cafe, Choices Menswear, Bermuda Book Store, G-Wiz, Mystique’s, Pic-a-Pet and the Irish Linen Shop. Fr. Attilio Morelli, Pastor of St. Michael’s Church is hosting A Biblical Itinerary through the Last Four Things of Our Life on Wednesday, December 4th. Starting at 7.30pm, this discussion on where we are heading to includes Death, Judgement, Hell and Paradise, offering a fresh existential look. This is open to all. Jiketsu Martial Arts, Fitness & Natural Healing Centre is holding a two-lesson Women’s Essential Self-Defense Course on Thursday, December 5th and Thursday, December 12th from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. In this course from the Self-Defense Company you will learn the three secrets to self defense, be able to exploit the three weaknesses of any criminal, know when you are being set up for an attack and instantly turn the tables and so much more. Taught by certified self-defense trainer Reuben Bean, this course teaches the essentials of awareness, threat recognition, close range and ground escape and evasion tactics, defensive screen training and personal alarm training. It is a cruel irony that during party season, when everyone wants to look their best, we are also surrounded by fattening (and delicious) food and drinks. Luckily, the Jiketsu Centre at the Old Berkeley Institute, have come to the rescue with their annual Shin-Gi-Tai Auto-Flow Trunk Trimming programme to ensure you enjoy the holidays without putting on the weight. Starting Thursday, December 5th, classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon until 1pm and Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8pm. Tuition starts at $100 per month. Some merry melodies can be heard in St. John’s Church on Thursday, December 5th as Saltus Grammar School presents Carols For All. This will start at 7pm and admission is free.
Missing the Ibiza-style chillout vibe of The Big Chill? Then great news as Chill at the Grill is opening at Victoria Grill on Friday, December 6th. Felix Tod, Tony Brannon and Joy T. Barnum will be playing both live music and DJ’d house and lounge tunes for your listening pleasure every week, with the exception of December 27th, until DJ PM takes over on January 24th. Felix, Tony and Joy will then return on March 21st until April 25th. It all starts at 5.30pm and goes on until late. For reservations, call 296-5050.
Onionpatch Academy at St. Paul’s AME Church are offering Friday Night Babysitting so that you can have kid-free late night Christmas Shopping. This will be on December 6th and 13th from 6pm until 9pm. Kids aged between 3 months and 10 years will be entertained and fed by qualified staff. The cost is $40 and cash payments only are accepted.
The Bermuda High School (BHS) present their 2013 Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, December 7th. This will be from 10am until 4pm in the Jessie Vesey Sporting Centre (JVSC Gym) at BHS and will feature vendors selling a variety of goods, including art, toys, clothing, accessories, jewellery, confections, mosaic rocks/door stops, cedar items, handmade body scrubs, handblown glass, and much more, as well as a gift-wrapping station, nail bar, Ashley’s Lemonade, The Bean Coffee Bar, donuts and Buzz Express. Amnesty International Bermuda will be launching its participation in the Global Letter Writing Marathon with AmnesTea, a tea party on Saturday, December 7th. Thousands of people worldwide will be giving hope to people who have suffered human rights abuses. You can participate locally by joining Amnesty on the City Hall Lawn and Washington Mall between noon and 5pm where you can enjoy tea and cakes whilst raising money for human rights. There will be the opportunity to write and sign letters and messages of hope and solidarity to someone suffering human rights abuses. The UberVida are offering an opportunity to be part of the Christmas Boat Parade on Saturday, December 7th. The boat will depart the #1 Dock on Front Street at 6.30pm. This is a family-friendly events with lots of Christmas music, mulled wine, etc. The cost is $25 for adults, $15 for kids and tickets are available from www.pTix.bm.
Don’t forget to warm up your own vocal chords for the audience participation caroling segment at the Bermuda Philharmonic Society’s Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 8th. This will be at 4pm at Warwick Academy and the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra, Bermuda Chamber Choir and the audience participation caroling will be conducted by LaTannia Ellerbe, while Warwick Academy Electric Strings will be conducted by Brian Swan. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, $50 for Patrons and are available from BPS Members or at the door.
Dolphin Quest Bermuda are promising a whale of a time (so to speak) at their special holiday event, Christmas Carols with the Dolphins, on Sunday, December 8th. This candlelit celebration will be from 6pm to 6.45pm at the National Museum of Bermuda in the Royal Naval Dockyard, with your favourite Christmas carols sung alongside the dolphins. Caroling with the Dolphins isn’t the only festive fun happening in the West End this holiday season. You are invited to join Santa and his elves for Christmas Sundays in Royal Naval Dockyard on December 8th, 15th and 22nd for free events, gift wrapping, give-a-ways, goodies and more. As previously mentioned, Caroling With Dolphins will be happening on December 8th but there is also the Winter Fashion Show in the Clocktower Mall on December 15th, and the Festival of Lights Marina Competition on December 22nd. Dr. Reid Robinson, Chiropractor and Wellness Practitioner, will be hosting the second in a lecture series on the Natural Way to Good Health at BUEI on Monday, December 9th. From 6pm until 8pm, Dr. Robinson will discuss the benefits of a genetically-congruent, nutritionaly-sufficient, toxin-free diet. The lecture is free but spaces are limited and so will be on a first-come, first-served basis. CedarBridge Academy invite you to their annual winter concert at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on Tuesday, December 10th. New to the Olde Towne, there will be a Drop In Writers Class every Wednesday evening from December 11th at CV Cafe in St. George’s. The workshops will be from 6pm until 8pm and will be hosted by award-winning Trinidadian author, Lynn Joseph, who will focus on specific craft tools to help writers kickstart their current work in progress or generate a brand new book. There will be no class on Christmas Day. Classes will resume on January 29th. The class fee is $30.
In addition, on Saturday, December 14th, there will also be a full day Writers Workshop. From 10am until 5pm, Finding Your Story will concentrate on character arcs, plot outlines and increasing dramatic tension and conflict to create more satisfying and publishable works. The fee is $130. Classes are small and limited in number, meaning that individual attention is guaranteed to help writers get the most out of the workshops. Echo Productions presents its first High School Dance, Milkshake on Saturday, December 14th. In partnership with the Bermuda Athletic Association, Echo Productions promises a safe, alcohol-free environment for your teen to relax and have fun! Jiketsu Martial Productions is proud to present the 5th Annual Budo Cup Championships on Sunday, December 15th.
