Morning all!

Apparently, the first official day of Fall was yesterday.  Hmmm…I’m not quite ready to accept this yet so I think we can cling onto Summer for a little longer in Bermuda.  Here are the latest island events:

The Alchemy of Objects, the next in the PartnerRe Art Lecture Series at Bermuda National Gallery will be on Thursday, September 25th.

The guest speaker will be acclaimed contemporary American sculptor and conceptual artist, Willie Cole, who is known for assembling and transforming ordinary domestic and used objects such as irons, high-heeled shoes, hair dryers, bicycle parts, and other discarded appliances and hardware, into imaginative and powerful works of art and installations.

Cole’s work combines references and appropriation ranging from African and African-American imagery, to Dada’s readymades and Surrealism’s transformed objects, and icons of American pop culture or African and Asian masks, into highly original and witty assemblages.

The reception will be from 5.30pm, followed by the lecture itself at 6pm.

The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members.

Morning Troops!

I’m loving this time of year – not only has the humidity started to drop but there are so many Bermuda events to choose from on the calendar:

Autumn Open, a members’ juried show including work of all media, is currently open at the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard.

The show will remain open until Saturday, October 19th and admission is free.

Morning Boys and Girls!

Here’s the latest on the Bermuda calendar:

The man, the legend and the liar himself is returning this September to Bermuda, his second home. Comedian and musician Jimmy Keys will be headlining a three week tour at Red Steakhouse and Bar from Thursday, September 4th until Wednesday, September 24th, excluding Tuesday, September 9th.

Jimmy will be performing 5 nights a week from 8.30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, promising a high energy variety show packed with comedy, visual musical impressions and favourite Broadway, wrapped around some of the most exciting piano playing that you will ever witness.

Red will be offering a special Jimmy Keys Prix Fixe Menu and their A La Carte menu, designed by Executive Chef Chad Mitchell and featuring the highest quality of Certified Angus Beef and fresh locally caught seafood, will also be available.

Reservations are highly recommended and large party bookings and private functions are available.

Morning Kids!

Welcome to the first post of September – let’s hope this month is a little drier than August!  Although, if it’s not, at least we can console ourselves with the fact that lobster season is back.  Here are the latest upcoming events for Fall in Bermuda:

Learn more about Bermuda’s history at Bermuda National Library’s Summer Film Series on Wednesdays in September.

Screenings will run from 11am each week in the Bermuda History and Cultural Studies Room.

Foodways on Wednesday, September 3rd focuses on Bermuda’s unique culinary traditions including St. David’s fried fish, shark hash, old-fashion fish stew and curried lobster. Featuring interviews with chef Fred Ming, St. David’s cooking legend Dolly Pitcher, and food historian Joe Gibbons.

Woodworking on Wednesday, September 10th will focus on Bermuda’s unique traditions of working with wood. Featuring interviews with artist and carver Chesley Trott, carpenter Jermey Johnson, artist Milton Hill Sr. and his apprentice Ami Zanders.

Building on Wednesday, September 17th will focus on Bermuda’s unique building traditions. Featuring interviews with masons George Leon Burt and Dennis Butterfield as well as carpenter George Phipps.

In the Hour of Victory on Wednesday, September 24th tells the story of Bermudian Major Toby Smith who lost his life at the Battle of Overloon during the final Allied Push for victory. This first hand account uniquely recaptures the war-time era and its impact on a family, leaving a lasting legacy of what it means to serve one’s King and Country.
