Happy October to you all and welcome to the final quarter of 2014!  Once again, I have somehow blinked and missed a large chunk of the year.  Oh well, here’s what’s happening in Bermuda this Fall:

 

0929 Reefs Signature Happy Hour

Why wait for Friday to celebrate? The Reefs has just introduced its Signature Happy Hour from 6pm until 8pm on Mondays to Thursdays. Enjoy bottled beer for $5, a selection of wines for $6 and well mix drinks for $7.

Event

If there’s a story inside you waiting to be set free then you may be interested in a new Creative Writing Class at 7pm every Wednesday evening from October 1st at Daylesford.

The class will be held by Jan Quinn and all skill levels are welcome.

The cost is $95 per rolling 6-week segment. No payment is required until after your first session so you can try it out and make sure you like it before you commit.

In memory of Nathan Richardson, there will be a special Fish Fry on Friday, October 3rd.

This will run from 11am until 7pm at the Leopards Club on Brunswick Street, the yellow building next to Trott & Duncan.

Donations are $15, or $20 with a smoothie, and delivery is available with 6 or more orders. Proceeds will benefit his children’s education.

1003 Footy Samba Futsal Clinic

Footy Promotions has once again partnered with Denison Cabral (Brazilian Native and United States Futsal Federation Technical Director) to host a Samba Futsal Clinic at Bermuda College from Friday, October 3rd to Sunday, October 5th.

Samba Futsal Clinic is for players between the age of 8 to 15 years old. Girls are also welcome to attend as they have a women’s futsal coach from the US also assisting with the clinic.

This year the clinic will include fun skill sessions and a mini-tournament.

The October 3rd session will run from 5.45pm until 7pm for 8 to 11 year olds and from 7pm until 8.15pm for 12 to 15 year olds.

On October 4th, the session for 8 to 11 year olds will run from 3pm until 5.30pm and then from 5.30pm until 7pm for 12 to 15 year olds.

The Mini Tournaments on ‎October 5th will run from 9am until 10.30am for 8 to 11 year olds and then from 10.30am until noon for 12 to 15 year olds.

The registration fee is $75.

Taste 141 invite you to start off your weekend with live music from Outta Bounds on Friday, October 3rd.

The band will be performing from 7pm until 10pm and there is no cover charge.

1004 Bounce for Autism

Do your very best Tigger impression at Tomorrow’s Voices’ 4th Annual Bounce for Autism Fun Day at Southampton Rangers Sports Club on Saturday, October 4th.

From 2pm until 8pm, this community fun day will have bouncing as the focus of activities and will include fun castles, water slides, bounce basketball, water tag, a Velcro wall, food and snack stalls, vendors, face painting and tattoos, bouncy races, prizes and a children’s dance competition.

The cost of admission is $10 for anyone aged 2 and over.

This event will raise funds for their Autism Early Intervention Centre, which provides daily services for children with autism and other developmental disabilities in Bermuda.

1008 Tobias Buckell Reading

Sci-fi fans, come enjoy a reading by New York Times bestselling Grenadian author Tobias S. Buckell, author of Crystal Rain, Hurricane Fever, Arctic Rising, Ragamuffin, and Halo: The Cole Protocol.

This will take place at the Bermuda Society of Arts, City Hall on Wednesday, October 8th. The reception will begin at 5.30pm, followed by the reading at 6pm.

Tickets are $5 and available at the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Dame Lois Browne-Evans Building, 4th Floor, 58 Court Street.

1004 Sweet Reggae Cruise

Enjoy some of your 70s, 80s and 90s favourites while out on the water at the Sweet Reggae Cruise aboard the UberVida on Saturday, October 4th.

The boat will depart #1 Dock on Front Street at 7.30pm, returning at 10.30pm.

1010 Serjeant' Cup Marine Exhibit

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art invite you to join them in the Rick Faries Gallery for the opening reception of the Serjeant’s Cup Marine Exhibit, from 5.30pm until 7pm on Friday, October 10th.

In 2012, St Peter’s Church celebrated its 400th Anniversary and was granted the title, Their Majesties Chappell, by Her Majesty The Queen.

The intituling document, signed by The Queen, was hand carried to Bermuda and presented to the Church by Mr David Baldwin, Serjeant of the Vestry of the Chapel Royal.

Mr Baldwin also donated to St Peter’s Church a handsome trophy cup inscribed, The Serjeant’s Cup for Marine Art.

There was an open call for Art Submissions and the deadline was on Monday, September 29th. The awards ceremony will taking place at Masterworks on Friday, October 17th.

The exhibit will run until October 22nd.

1012 Round the Sound Swimathon

We are about to be invaded by mer-people!

Well, kinda. Local and overseas swimmers, will fill our waters to challenge themselves at the 24th Annual Bermuda Round-the-Sound Open Water Charity Swimathon on Sunday, October 12th.

This is open to swimmers of all ages and abilities, with distances available being 10k, 7.25k, 4k, 2k, and 0.8k. Start times are between 10am and 12.45pm, depending on the distance category, which also decides the starting location.

The charity this year is Windreach, who will receive all donations/pledges.

The registration fee varies depending on the swim distance and entry is available online at www.racedayworld.com. Overseas swimmers should register through Aqua Moon Adventures.

Registration is open until 5pm on Friday, October 10th.

1017 KatKids Festival of Lights Night Market

Join the KatKids Team for a night of shopping and fun at the Festival of Lights Night Market on Friday, October 17th.

From 5.30pm on the lower level of Pier 6 on Front Street, you will find many treasures, including jewellery, candles, organic soaps, arts and crafts, organic teas, paintings, sculptures and so much more from the busy streets of Kathmandu, Nepal, and also from Uganda, Africa.

Tickets are $10 and available from www.BDAtix.bm. Proceeds from this event will go towards children in need of food, shelter, healthcare and/or education in Nepal, Southern Africa and Bermuda.

1018 Pick Your Own Halloween Pumkins

There are two chances to attend the 5th Annual Pick Your Own Pumpkins at Astwood Park in Warwick this year, on Saturday, October 18th or on Saturday, October 25th.

From 9am until 3pm, you can expect face painting, free tractor rides, caramel apples, and lots of family fun at the pumpkin patch. Children who wear costumes will be given a treat. Small, medium and large pumpkins are available and there is easy parking.

Admission is free and pumpkins are between $12 and $25, depending on the size.

1025 BUEI Pirates of Bermuda

Ahoy there, mateys – calling all pirates to BUEI’s Halloween Party on Saturday, October 25th.

Pirates of Bermuda will run from noon until 4pm and promises to be fun for all ages with an Enchanted Dive for young children and a Haunted Ship for the older kids.

There’s booty to be won at the games stalls, a costume parade, entertainment by In Motion dancers, a buccaneer bake sale, Ashley’s lemonade, Winky Dinky Dog and so much more.

Admission is free for members and $5 for non-members. Children under 3 are free.

1023 Bermuda Hauntings

Back by popular demand, just in time for Halloween, John Cox, historian and author of Bermuda Hauntings and Bermuda’s Favourite Haunts will be at Bermuda National Library on Thursday, October 23rd for the fourth Bermuda Hauntings event.

From 6.30pm to 8pm, you can hear John Cox tell ghost stories and also have the opportunity to share your own experiences and family stories.

John Cox’s books will also be available for purchase on the night.

Admission is free but space is limited so registration is required.

1031 Mariners Halloween Party

A frightfully good time is promised at the Mariners RFC Annual Halloween Party at Flanagan’s and Outback Sports Bar, on Friday, October 31st.

From 7pm, there will be DJs spinning the best and scariest music, prizes for best costume, drink specials and jello shots at the door.

1102 Joyful Noise

Enjoy an inspirational night packed with music, dancing, and fun as Echelon International presents Joyful Noise, Bermuda’s first a cappella choir competition at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday, November 2nd.

Doors open at 6pm and showtime is at 7pm, featuring musical performances by Proclaim It!, Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity choir, St. Pauls A.M.E. choir, and En Harmony.

1107 Fall Salsa Fete

Join Salsa Friends for a fun weekend of live Latin music, parties, shows, workshops and a few activities on the side. They’ve been working diligently all year to ensure they can bring you the best experience they can, and the result is the Fall Salsa Fête from Friday, November 7th to Sunday, November 9th.

Both locals and visitors are welcome to come take part in what they hope to be a regularly-occurring event produced by Salsa Friends. This inaugural edition will feature Son Salvaje, a mesmerizing Latin Band based in Tampa, FL to keep your feet happy all night, Los Salsomanos from Toronto, one of the smoothest dance teams in existence, led by DJ Giovanni Torres from Toronto who promises to make you want to dance until the sun comes up, and, of course, local dancers, DJs and performers.

The fun will kick off with The Warm Up: Welcome White Party which will take place at Bella Vista Bar & Grill at 9pm on Friday, November 7th. This will be an opportunity to welcome the international guests with a workshop and party featuring DJ Giovanni Torres (Deejay Gio) .

The main event will be the Live Latin Music, Showcases and Party at 8pm at The Docksider Pub & Restaurant on Saturday, November 8th. After two afternoon workshops, the highlight of this weekend includes live latin music for your dancing pleasure by Son Salvaje and DJ Giovanni Torres of Toronto, as well as a Latin dance showcase featuring Los Salsomanos and local performers.

The Sunday Funday: Salsa Bowling Party will be at the Strykz Bowling Lounge at 3pm on Sunday, November 9th and includes a workshop, a little bowling, a little salsa, and a lot of fun.

Individual tickets are $15 for the Friday party, $25 for the Saturday showcase/party and $25 per workshop.

Passes are $30 for the Friday, which includes the workshop and party, $60 for the Saturday, which includes 2 workshops, the showcase and party, and $25 for the Sunday, which includes a workshop and social. A full weekend pass is available for $100, a saving of $40.

1108 BNT Golf Tournament

No matter what your skill level, your short game will get a great workout and friendly competition at the Bermuda National Trust 2014 Charity Golf Tournament at Turtle Hill Golf Club, Fairmont Southampton on Saturday, November 8th.

Entry categories are Individual, Team (friends or family) and Corporate. Welcome drinks and registration begin at noon with a shotgun start at 1pm. The lead sponsor is Appleby and there will be many challenges and prizes for golfers of all ages and levels throughout the course. From 4pm until 6pm, there will be a prize giving reception at the golf club.

Individual entry is $175, foursome entry is $700 and corporate sponsorship is available for $1200..

1108 Bill Rogers Workshop Nov

The Arts Project St George’s welcomes Bill Rogers back to Bermuda this November to teach two full-day workshops.

Plein- Air Landscape in Oil or Acrylic will take place on Saturday, November 8th and The Figure in Oil or Acrylic will take place on Tuesday, November 11th.

Both workshops will meet in St. Peter’s Church Hall at the foot of St. Peter’s Church steps in St. George’s and will run from 10am until 4pm.

The cost is $195, if you pay before Oct. 31st, $220 thereafter. Lunch and refreshments are included in the price.

Spaces are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
