Well, we definitely have a busy week ahead of us – you would have to be living under a rock to be unaware that the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is taking over the island this weekend!  Below you’ll find an update on the latest events, including the latest on the America’s Cup in Bermuda – and don’t forget to check the Quick Recap section at the bottom to find upcoming events that have been covered in previous posts:

 

1014 The Art of Zack Marshall

Marshallworx Ltd are hosting Early Years: The Art of Zack Marshall, an art show opening in the October Gallery in the RAMRe Building on Reid Street on Wednesday, October 14th.

The show will run until Saturday, October 17th and thereafter by private appointment.

Opening night on Wednesday will be from 5.30pm until 9pm and then from 12.30pm to 7pm from Thursday to Saturday.

There is no admission fee.

1014 Foundation Yoga Course

The Elbow Beach Iyengar Yoga Centre invites you to start your yogic journey at their next series of Yoga Foundation classes from Wednesday, October 14th.

Designed for complete beginners and those wishing to revise basic skills, these four-week courses will run for 1.5 hours each week, making each course 6 hours in total. The Wednesday evening course, starting on October 14th, will run from 6.15pm until 7.45pm. The Sunday morning course begins on October 18th and will run from 10am until 11.30am. The Thursday morning course will start on October 22nd, running from 11am until 12.30pm each week. The Saturday morning class will run weekly from 9am until 10.30am, from October 24th.

There is a maximum of 12 per class and all classes are taught by certificated Iyengar Yoga teachers so you can be sure of safe and skilled teaching.

The Iyengar method is systematic and thorough. Through careful structuring you make safe and steady progress. You start with asanas (postures), including savasana (relaxation) and gradually more difficult asanas are introduced as your depth of understanding increases. After some time, in accordance with the Yoga Sutras, pranayama (breathing technique) is introduced.

The cost is $108 for the four sessions.

1015 Endeavour Day

The Bermudian public is invited to come join the fun at Endeavour Day, the official opening for the East End Facility of the America’s Cup Endeavour Community Sailing Programme, on Thursday, October 15th.

Nearly 550 students between the ages of 9 and 12 have been invited from local schools, to celebrate this special event with a fun and entertaining afternoon.

Running from noon until 8pm, this event will feature an Opening Ceremony at 1pm, immediately followed by the start of the Endeavour St. George’s Regatta.  There will be an Endeavour race on the RS Feva boats, the Hobies and the Bics, as well as a Bermuda Pilot Gig exhibition race, and a race in traditional Bermuda fitted dinghies with three teams – America’s Cup sailors competing against a Bermudian team!  A highlight of the event is that the crew for each race will be Endeavour student sailors, competing alongside professional America’s Cup sailors from all six teams.

Regatta viewing will be in two locations – Ordnance Island and the T.S. Admiral Somers Building, with audio piped between the two venues.

There will be a display of the Endeavour boats on Ordnance Island with additional sailing activities.

This event is free and open to the public.

1015 Save the TaTas Sip n Shop

Help Save the Ta-Tas by raising funds for breast cancer research at Discovery Wines’ Sip and Shop on Thursday, October 15th.

From 5pm until 7pm at their warehouse on Bakery Lane, they will have a few of their wines to sample along with some nibbles.

10% of all sales from that night will be donated to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. No other sales or discounts apply. Representatives from Bermuda Cancer and Health will also be there that night to talk about breast cancer prevention.

1015 Bermuda Quilters Guild Open Evening

The Bermuda Quilters Guild are hosting an Open Evening on Thursday, October 15th.

From 7.30pm until 9pm in St. Mary’s Church Hall in Warwick, you can have an introduction to quilting where members of the Guild will demonstrate and explain the process of patchwork and quilting.

Light refreshments will be served.

This event is free of charge.

1016 Berkeley Alumni Games

The Berkeley Educational Society presents Green House versus Gold House: The Berkeley Institute First Annual Founders Day Alumni Football and Alumnae Netball Match Fundraiser on Friday, October 16th.

Simultaneous matches begin at 1.15pm on Friday, October 16th on the school fields. Berkeley family and friends are welcome to both participate and spectate.

The registration fee is a $50 donation which includes the match tee-shirt. There is no entrance fee for spectators.

They are also issuing a Final Call for Match Players and are looking for players from the 1960s all the way up to the 2000s.

1016 America's Cup World Series

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event in Bermuda will be held from Friday, October 16th to Sunday, October 18th.

This is an international racing circuit featuring all six America’s Cup teams competing on foiling, wing-sailed 45ft catamarans known as AC45F.

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is the first stage of competition for the 35th America’s Cup to be held in Bermuda in 2017 and an early opportunity for the Teams to put points on the board that carry forward into the next stages of the competition.

In addition to the racing, there will be the “Our Bermuda” Festival and Event Village along Front Street, offering a family-friendly programme of events as well as evening activities, a live music concert and a chance for visitors to enjoy the America’s Cup experience.

The festival will feature dozens of exhibitors, food vendors, sailing, live commentary, fireworks, sailor Dock Out Shows, AC talk show, kids activities, entertainers and more. Daylight screens will be available to watch the races on land in the Fan Zone. It’s an event the whole family will enjoy.

The Village will open at 5pm on the Friday and will be along Front Street from Parliament Street to Par La Ville Road. Happy Hour with Entertainment will be from 5pm until 8pm in the Fan Zone at No. 1 Parking Lot, where the Opening Ceremony will start at 8pm, followed by more entertainment. The Village will close at 8pm.

Saturday is Race Day 1 and the Village will open at 11.30am. Various events will be going on, including the Red Bull Skydive Show, but Race 1 will start at 2.10pm and Race 2 will start at 2.55pm. Gates to the America’s Cup Jam will open at 7pm and the Village will close at 11pm.

The Village will reopen at 11.30am for Race Day 2 on Sunday. Again, there will be various events with Race 3 starting at 2.10pm and Race 4 starting at 2.55pm. The Awards Ceremony will be from 5pm until 5.30pm before the Village closes at 6pm.

1017 Sailor Dock Out Show

Come cheer on the sailors as they head out to the race track at the Sailor Dock Out Show on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th.

At 12.30pm in the Fan Zone, you can meet the sailors on the stage before they start racing.  In addition, look out for the Red Bull Sky Diving Show, the Fun Zone with plenty of games, and much more.

This event is free and family-friendly.

1017 Golden Shoes Movie

Footy Promotions presents a screening of the movie Golden Shoes on Saturday, October 17th.

Starting at 3pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI, Golden Shoes is described as Rudy meets Bend It Like Beckham, full of emotion and twists that will get the audience rooting for the child star who may just inspire us all.

Eight year old Christian is about to face the biggest challenge of his life. The hopeful youth is a dreamer, who has dreamed of becoming a great football player like Cristiano Ronaldo, ever since he was a young boy. Unlike other young boys, Christian believes in his heart and soul, that he can be the best football player and play for the National Youth team. But first, he must overcome the impossible.

Watch six world class sailing teams race for the Cup from the hottest seats in the house, aboard one of the America’s Cup Official Spectator Boats on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th.

All boats sit on the race lines with front row viewing.  There is a very small window to board all boats by 1pm so Race Day check-in is at 12.30pm sharp.  Boats will be at the Ferry Terminal, Albuoy’s or No. 1 Dock.   The boat will return to the dock after the races and is estimated to be around 3 hours.  The ticket price includes the boat only and, unless specified otherwise, there is a cash bar only.

1018 Grey Goose VIP Lounge at Red

A great opportunity to enjoy one of the best views of the racing as Red Steakhouse and Bar is hosting a VIP Grey Goose Lounge for the final day of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series on Sunday, October 18th.

The day will start with a light breakfast buffet from 11am and a lunch buffet from 1.30pm. You will then be able to view Race 3 starting at 2.10pm and Race 4 starting at 2.55pm from the ideal viewing point on Red’s balcony. Afternoon tea will be served from 4pm and the day will finish off with the Awards Ceremony from 5pm to 5.30pm.

Lounge Passes are $150 each or $100 each for groups of ten or more. The pass also includes 4 complimentary drinks.

Fall’s coolest trends meet the season’s hottest beats at A.S. Cooper & Sons Ltd’s Fall Festival on Thursday, October 22nd.

1024 Halloween at BUEI

Calling all boys and ghouls, BUEI invite you to their annual Children’s Halloween Party on Saturday, October 24th.

From noon until 4pm, this event will feature a Haunted Tunnel, Enchanted Dive, Swashbuckling Games, Buccaneer Bake Sale and their famous Costume Contest.

Get ready for a Fall Family Fun Day at St. George’s Prep School on Saturday, October 24th.

1024 City Arts Festival

The City Arts Festival is back for 2015 and will take place on Saturday, October 24th.

From 3pm until 8pm throughout the City of Hamilton, there will be fun for the whole family with buskers, street performers, arts market and food vendors. For the first time, the Festival will feature an Infinity Art Walk, a guided walk through specific areas of the City highlighting public art. This will begin at the City Hall and Arts Centre on Church Street.

Mariner’s Club are hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner with the Halloween theme, Thirst for Blood, on Saturday, October 24th.

The evening will begin with cocktails at 6.30pm, followed by the dinner and show at 7.30pm. Halloween costumes are welcome but not compulsory.

1024 Beach Breast Cancer Awareness Cocktail Party

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bermuda Bistro at the Beach is proud to be hosting a Charity Cocktail Party for the Ladies on Saturday, October 24th.

From 7pm until 10pm, this event will feature Cloud 9, Fluid Fitness, Ariel Therapy, and live entertainment, with two complimentary cocktails and canapes.

1025 Down Syndrome Awareness Month Buddy Walk

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month and this will be marked by a first time event in Bermuda as the Buddy Walk for Special Needs Persons will take place on Sunday, October 25th.

This 5K walk will start at at Victoria Park at 9am, finishing at the same location. All are welcome to support the special needs person with Down Syndrome, learning disabilities, autism, developmental disabilities, physical challenges, etc, by walking with them for the cause. With the aim of awareness, acceptance and inclusion, and also to assist the caregiver support group, there will also be activities, food, music, speakers, and more.

The registration fee is $25 and all are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the non-profit charity group, Kiwanis Club of Bermuda, who are also seeking support, volunteers, advocates, donations and pledges,

1031 Bermuda Botanical Society Plant Sale

A great shopping opportunity for those with green fingers will be at the Bermuda Botanical Society Annual Plant Sale on Saturday, October 31st.

From 9am until noon, you will find trees, bushes, endemics and natives, all reasonably-priced.  The sale is planned at the JJ Outerbridge building in the Botanical Gardens, however if renovations are ongoing, it will take place in one of the adjacent buildings instead.

Proceeds will go towards bursaries for people studying botanical sciences.

1103 A Celebration of Mark Twain

Are you are Mark Twain enthusiast? Did you read any of his novels in school? Are you curious to learn more about him and his works?

If so, then the Bermuda National Library invites you to join them as they host A Celebration of Mark Twain throughout the month of November.

The schedule of events starts on Tuesday, November 3rd with a Lecture by Dr. Cindy Lovell, executive director of Mark Twain House (Hartford CT). Dr. Lovell will be focusing on Samuel Clemens in his youth; the origin and early life of Mark Twain.

The next event on Tuesday, November 10th will be a screening of the documentary, Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey. According to AFI, filmmaker Scott Teems takes us behind the scenes with Holbrook for an intimate peek at Twain’s continuing influence on our culture and the dedicated actor who brings him to life. A review of the film can be found here.

In Mark Twain: Reminiscences and Other Lies on Thursday, November 19th, local actor Gavin Wilson portrays Mark Twain from 1904.
The evening starts with a reception in the Bermuda Historical Society Museum. Guests will be invited to move to the upper floor of the Library at 6pm to attend a presentation by Mark Twain.

On Tuesday, November 24th, there will be a Panel Discussion on the Use of Humour as a Means of Critiquing Society, as done so expertly by Mark Twain. The panel includes Tim Hodgson, journalist and editorial consultant with the Royal Gazette, and Catherine Hay, Famous for 15 Minutes playwright and author.

All events will start at 5.30pm and will run until 7.30pm.

The cost is $5 charge per event, or $15 for those making advance reservations for all four events. There will be no refund if reservations for each event are done individually for a maximum charge of $20.

1106 Bond Spectre Movie Screening

Calling all 007 fans, the Bermuda Red Cross presents their movie premier event with a screening of the new James Bond film, Spectre, on Friday, November 6th.

The movie will screen at 6pm at Speciality Cinema and will be followed by an Afterparty at The Club on Bermudiana Road from 8.30pm onwards.

Tickets are $120 per person for the movie and afterparty or $40 for the movie only. The afterparty includes a welcome drink, tapas-style dining, dancing with DJ Danger Don, Bond-themed raffles and activities. Limited tickets are available.

1107 A Crowning Occasion

Promising a glorious tribute to our longest-reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, the Bermuda Chamber Choir presents A Crowning Occasion on Saturday and Sunday, November 7th and 8th.

This will take place at Wesley Methodist Church at 7.30pm on the Saturday and 4pm on the Sunday. Directed by Kate Ross, featured works will include Mozart: Coronation Mass, Handel: Coronation Anthems, Parry: I was Glad, Walton: Crown Imperial, and Rutter: Gloria (from ‘Gloria’).

Tickets cost $40 for adults, $20 for students, $125 for Diamond Sponsors (1 ticket), $550 for Sapphire Sponsors (5 tickets), and $1000 for Ruby Sponsors (6 tickets, plus a Sunday Cocktail Reception).

1108 HH Dockyard Train Tour

The November edition of the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs’ Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series will be Historic Dockyard: A Train Tour on Sunday, November 8th.

The meeting point is at the Dockyard Ferry Terminal and, from 2pm until 4pm, you can explore the history of HM Dockyard with Andrew Bermingham, including a visit to the convict cemetery and Royal Navy cemetery with stops at the Spar Yard, the old Rectory and the convict engine house.

Spaces are limited and free tickets are available from the main office of Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Dame Lois Browne Evans Building, 58 Court Street, 4th Floor.

All those with at least one year’s yoga experience are welcome to the Yoga Ropes Workshop on Friday, November 13th.

From 6pm until 8pm at the Club Yoga Centre, located at The Club in Paget, the class will have a maximum of 8 participants and will be working with a Senior Level 3 Iyengar Yoga Teacher.

The cost of the workshop is $40.
