January 4th, 2017 Bermuda Calendar Update

January is traditionally a quieter time of year but, never fear, there is still plenty to do in Bermuda – here are the latest additions to Bermuda’s calendar since the last post in 2016. As always, don’t forget to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of the post for a full listing of all upcoming events, including those previously covered in previous posts.
Dine at Fairmont Southampton during Restaurant Weeks and experience the flavours of the resort’s best restaurants at prices that won’t take a bite out of your wallet.
With a longer run than Bermuda Tourism’s general Restaurant Weeks, this will be available from Thursday, January 5th until Thursday, February 9th, when you can enjoy a three-course dinner – appetiser, entree and dessert – at one fabulous prix-fixe price.
Dine on tenderloin medallions or Atlantic Salmon at the renowned Waterlot Inn for $52 per person. The full menu can be viewed here.
At Newport, a Gastropub, find your favourites like pork ribs or a Cajun grouper sandwich for just $42 per person. The full menu can be viewed here.
Get passionate about Italian at Bacci and choose grilled Branzino or a pasta entrée for $32 per person. **UPDATE: Bacci will be closed from January 16th until February 8th and will not be participating in Restaurant Weeks**
Jasmine Lounge will also be serving lunch – order an app and a fried snapper sandwich or margarita pizza for just $22 per person. The full menu can be viewed here.

Every Thursday, you are invited to come dance the night away at The Docksider for Latin dancing at Clave Dance: Salsa Dancing Thursdays from January 5th.
Located in the back room at Docksider’s, the evening will start with an hour of Bachata lessons at 7pm followed by Salsa lessons at 8pm. From 9pm until late, there will be social dancing to great Latin music.
All skill levels are welcome and no partner is necessary. Come learn to dance and stay to enjoy the music. This event will run weekly until the end of 2017.
Classes are $12 each, or $10 each if you sign up for 10. There is no cover charge for the social dancing.

Enjoy, laugh and learn while supporting the vibes at Chewstick’s 14th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, January 6th.
Promising to be an event featuring stories of hope from Chewfam throughout their evolution, the evening at City Hall’s Earl Cameron Theatre will begin with a reception at 7pm, followed by an 8pm showtime.
Tickets are $30 and available at the door.

From 10.30am at the Youth Library, this special storytime will be filled will be action-packed activities.
The event is free and suitable for children aged 3 and older.

Taste the Flavors of Bermuda through a Cooking Demo featuring Wild Herbs and Plants of Bermuda on Sunday, January 8th.
From 4pm until 6pm in the Bermuda Salt Spray Soap Factory on Water Street, St. George’s, you are invited to come learn of the many edible plants you can cook with and the health benefits.
The cost is $25 per person.

Bermuda Youth Library presents the Golden Ticket Reading Challenge 2017 from Tuesday, January 10th to Saturday, April 15th.
Young readers are encouraged to check out and read as many books as you can during the challenge. You will get a hole punched in your challenge card each time you check out books. (1 punch per day) and if you earn 5 punches, you’ll receive a prize.
There are 40 golden tickets to be found in books throughout the library. Find a golden ticket in your checked out book and become eligible for the grand prize draw.

Most of us are tightening our belts after all that seasonal spending so, luckily for us, Bermuda Tourism are running an initiative to let us dine at many local restaurants at a reduced cost!
A marquee event in the calendar of every foodie who loves the island, Bermuda Restaurant Weeks is back for its sixth year, from Thursday, January 12th to Friday, February 3rd.
This year, 51 restaurants will be participating – the most ever. Once again, the Bermuda culinary community are encouraged to dazzle with Bermuda-inspired menus that show off the best of the island’s food culture – traditional favourites and creative interpretations with modern-day twists. You get to vote online for the establishment that conveyed Bermuda inspiration the best with the People’s Choice Awards in each price category.
Whether you’re a local or visiting us from someplace else, be sure to make Bermuda Restaurant Weeks part of your island life.
New for 2017, there’s no need to wait on the dinner bell. For the first time, lunch menus are also available across the island. This means a new and more affordable price structure that starts at just $22 for a two-course lunch, while for dinner, there are three tiered options for scrumptious three-course meals at $32, $42 and $52.

BUEI and The Gilbert and Sullivan Society are proud to be bringing the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series to Bermuda (on film) in glorious HD.
The 2017 season starts on Saturday, January 14th with a new production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde by Mariusz Treliński (the director responsible for the 2014–15 season’s double bill of Iolanta and Bluebeard’s Castle), and will be well served by a cast of outstanding Wagnerians: Nina Stemme as Isolde, Stuart Skelton as Tristan, Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne, and René Pape as King Marke, with Sir Simon Rattle conducting, in one of his rare appearances at the Met.. This will be in German with English subtitles, running for approximately 5 hours, with a 15 minute interval.
All screenings are at 5pm on Saturdays in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI. There will be a pre-performance and intermission cash bar as well as complimentary hors d’oeuvres at interval.
The season continues with Don Giovanni (Mozart) on February 4th, L’Amour de Loin (Saariaho) on February 18th, Nabucco (Verdi) on March 4th, Roméo et Juliette (Gounod) on March 18th, Rusalka (Dvorjak) on April 8th, La Traviata (Verdi) on April 29th, Idomeneo (Mozart) on May 13th, Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky) on May 27th, and Der Rosenkavalier (R Strauss) on June 10th.
Tickets are $35, or $35 for students, and available in advance online at www.pTix.bm or at the door. They will also be available at BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop around a week before each event and can be purchased in person or by phone on 294-0204. Cash, cheque and cards are accepted. When purchasing tickets to five or more shows, the price will be discounted to $30 each.

Whether your mantra is New Year, New Connections, or if you’re looking to reconnect with existing ones, female entrepreneurs and businesses owners are invited to come meet and mingle with other like-minded women at WOMB Connection on Thursday, January 19th.
Women who Own and Manage Businesses (WOMB) in Bermuda is a networking a support group for women, by women. Female entrepreneurs are a special breed, and make up 80% of small businesses. We have special issues, problems and concerns when it comes to running our business. This is the place, and the space to connect with other women business owners, network, share stories or triumphs and defeat, ask questions, share experiences. They currently meet every month at locations around the island. These meetings are an opportunity for female entrepreneurs to meet, engage and interact. They also host featured businesses, providing them the opportunity to showcase their business.
The January 2017 instalment will run from 5.30pm until 7.30pm at Red Steakhouse. Featured Businesses will be Nadia Laws from The Media Maven, Quantifi Consulting Services and Loseweightbermuda. Attendees who stay for dinner will get 15% off – reservations are suggested.
