Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art invite you to join them as they present a Special Screening of Maudie on Wednesday, May 9th.

Beginning at 6pm at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), this critically acclaimed film is about the life of popular folk artist Maud Lewis, who painted in Nova Scotia. In the story, Maud (Sally Hawkins) struggles with arthritis, memory of a lost child, and a family that doubts her ability, before moving in with a surly fish peddler (Ethan Hawke) as a housekeeper.  Despite their differing personalities, they marry asher art gains in popularity. Maudie overcomes adversity to become a beloved figure in the community.

Maud Lewis (born Maud Dowley, March 7, 1903 – July 30, 1970) was a Canadian folk artist from Nova Scotia. Living in poverty with her husband in a small house in Marshalltown, Nova Scotia, most of her life, she achieved national recognition in 1964 and 1965. Several books, plays and films have since been produced about her. Lewis remains one of Canada’s best-known folk artists. Her works and the restored Maud Lewis House are displayed in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.  The trailer can be viewed here.

Tickets are $30, which includes wine and cheese refreshments, and can be purchased at the front desk of Masterworks inside the Botanical Gardens, or from BUEI on the night.  Drinks can be purchased from The HabourFront Restaurant.

Masterworks is delighted to present Shalae Johnstone’s first show, opening on Friday, May 11th.

Shalae Johnstone is one of Bermuda’s emerging visual story-tellers.  Weaving together different materials in richly coloured collages she tells the tale of the Bermuda Triangle. Travelers drawn across the seas towards a magical land, captured by a hook shaped island. Mystery and menace coexist. For the ships, planes and people there appears to be no rescue save for a spiritual awakening, heightening with each wave that pushes them toward the shore. Bewitching Bermuda shows its side as the Devil’s Isle. Textures and colours intensify the sense of the supernatural.

The opening will be from 5.30pm in Homer’s Cafe and there is no fee to attend.

The culmination of the Bermuda’s Heritage Month celebrations is, of course, the Annual Bermuda Day Parade, with this year’s theme being What We Share, on Friday, May 25th.

The 2018 Heritage Month theme recognizes that the Bermudian experience is not universal, but what we share is far more important than what divides us. On a 21 square mile island, we are united in family bonds that extend from St. George’s to Sandys, and friendships between them that span generations. We live in paradise, surrounded by impossibly pink sand and crystal blue water, but it is our connection as a people to the environment that is common. Famed for hospitality, Bermuda is more than service to visitors but also the kindness to those less fortunate, the community spirit following a hurricane, the generosity of neighbours, the unabashed abundance of philanthropy and hope. We share codfish and potatoes every Sunday, red bean soup, jerk chicken, a diaspora of tastes that has less to do with what you’re eating and more to do with the company you share it with. Our heartbeats pound as snare drums following Gombeys, but it is that shared history of rebellion and freedom that we chase. This identity, these experiences, this beautiful island is what we share.

The parade will include all the usual favourites – floats, gombeys, majorettes, community groups, and dance troops- and will move along Marsh Folly Road from 1.30 PM, and will continue right through to the top of Cedar Avenue. The parade then turns left onto Church Street, takes a right down Court Street, a right along Front Street, and finally up Queen Street.

For more information, including updates on the day’s schedule, visit www.CommunityandCulture.bm.
