I’m just giving you a heads-up that tomorrow is the International Day of Happiness in case you’d like to make an extra effort to spread happiness, especially to those who need it most. Hope that this will make some of you happy – here’s the latest rundown of things to do in Bermuda:
Tomorrow’s Voices will host its first Training Institute Workshop in a series of workshops for 2014 on Wednesday, March 19th. The workshop entitled, Let’s Play! The Importance of Play in the Development of Children, will be held from 6pm to 8pm at Tomorrow’s Voices located in the Sunshine League Building on King Street in Hamilton. The workshop will highlight the importance of play in the development of children and its increased recognition world-wide. During the workshop, attendees will examine the importance of play, learn various techniques to teach play, discover tools to engage in play, find out how to effectively incorporate peers, and assess their effectiveness, as a parent, teacher or other professional, engaging children in this area. Admission is $25 for attendees and they will be provided with a Professional Development Certificate upon completion of the workshop. Bristol Cellar Ltd are hosting their first Winemaker’s Dinner of the year featuring Ferrari Carano Winery to be held at Coral Beach Club on Friday, March 21st. From 7pm, this will be an evening with an Ambassador from the critically acclaimed Ferrari-Carano winery from Sonoma, CA, who who will discuss the history of their wines and vineyards while enjoying a thoughtfully paired menu, featuring beautifully prepared Lobster, Duck and Lamb, created by Chef Patrick. Dinner will include 7 Ferrari-Carano wines including their premier meritage, Tresor, and Black Muscat, Eldorado Noir. The cost is $140 per person. The Bermuda Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. present the annual Kappa Classic, Bermuda’s largest youth football tournament, at the National Sports Centre from Friday, March 21st to Sunday, March 23rd. This is for both boys and girls with U8, U10, U12 and U14 divisions and, to add a new level of excitement for this year, they will also be hosting two teams from New England. Preliminary games will be from 5.30pm until 8pm on the Friday and from 8am until 6pm on the Saturday. The finals will be from 8am until 3pm on the Sunday. In additional to the tournament itself, there will also be food concessions and fun castles to add to the day of family fun. This event is free to the public. As part of a global campaign, Amnesty International Bermuda will be promoting My Body My Rights and its local relevance at Washington Mall between noon and 4pm on Saturday, March 22nd. Governments have an obligation to ensure that everyone can enjoy these rights freely, without fear, coercion, or discrimination. St. John Ambulance Bermuda is hosting its first Century Ride on Sunday, March 23rd. This event will be a fundraiser as well as a celebration of 120 years of service. It will consist of 4 laps of 25 miles (teams are available) and is not a race so riders do not have to complete every lap. The start will between 6.30am and 9am and will begin and end at St. John Ambulance on Point Finger Road. The entry fee is $25 per rider. Following the Century Ride, there will be a BBQ, which will be free to riders, $20 to spectators and $10 for kids aged 5 to 12. In honour of The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade on Tuesday, March 25th, the African Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) have organised a variety of events between March 23rd and March 29th. Firstly, you are invited to worship at the ADHT Day of Remembrance Commemorative Service at Cobb’s Hill Methodist Church as they honour and remember, with song, puppet ministry and liturgical dance, those who died during the transatlantic slave trade on Sunday, March 23rd at 4pm. From Tuesday, March 35th until Thursday, March 27th, there will be a Day of Remembrance Lecture Series daily at 6.30pm in St. Paul’s Centennial Hall. The first lecture will be Liverpool – The Trade and The Traders presented by Dr. Mark Christian, Dept. Chair at Lehman College, CUNY on Tuesday, March 25th. The following day, Dr. Femi Bada will present Africa – Capture and Enslavement. The final lecture on the Thursday will be The Americas – The Middle Passage and Beyond by Dr. Clarence Maxwell, Assistant Professor at Millersville University, Pennsylvania. Entry to each lecture is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and free for children under 16. On Saturday, March 29th, you are invited to come out and honour two great football legends, Clyde Best and Cyrille Regis, at the ADHT Charity Celebrity Football Game. Team Best will be playing against Team Regis on March 29th at the Somerset Cricket Club. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children under 16, with proceeds going towards the Sites of Memory Plaque Replacement Fund. The Women’s Resource Centre invites you to attend a Mothers Parenting Sons Workshop: Lessons to Empower and Educate Mothers at Charities House on Point Finger Road on Monday, March 24th from 6pm until 8pm. The workshop will be presented by Denise Carey and topics include making room for your son’s father, helping Mom understand the value of all relationships – father, mother and son, and the consequences for not being the best mother you can be. This Workshop is for you if your man-child still lives at home, your idea of date night is hanging out with your son, you don’t know how to tell you son no, your son’s father is not involved in his life, or technology has overtaken your ability to parent. Washington Mall presents Our Natural Connection, a Nutrition and Holistic Health event on Wednesday, March 26th. From 6pm until 8pm, this event will cover a wide variety of topics. Dr. Kuni Frith-Black will teach you about the benefits of natural herbs and organic teas, while Caroline Tee will give you an introduction to Horizon Health and their holistic approach to health and posture. Jacquie Lohan from Atlantic Jewellery will explain the spiritual, emotional and physical healing of gemstones while Jocelyn and Marlie Powell from Kingston House B&B will explain the healthy benefits of a vegan lifestyle. Alison Williams from Headway will discuss the power of massage and Sharon Fenn from Sportseller will explain how to improve your workout experience with the correct clothing and footwear. Debi Ray Rivers from Saving Children and Revealing Secrets (S.C.A.R.S.) will present the work of the first organisation in Bermuda to specifically address child sex abuse. Registration is a minimum donation of $10 to S.C.A.R.S. Attendees will be eligible for the tea and food sampling, and the raffle draw between 7pm and 8pm. Whether you’re interested in buying or selling, CedarBridge Academy invite you to their Team Spritz Car Boot Sale on Saturday, March 29th. This will run from 8am until 4pm and the booths will have various items for sale, including second-hand clothes, shoes and toys, shades, and much more, as well as face-painting, a fun castle, DJ King Star, a bake sale, and hotdog sales. Entry is free to the public and the cost of renting a booth is $25. All proceeds from the car boot sale go towards CedarBridge Academy’s first ever Hair Show for students. If you’ve ever been interested in growing your own food to eat healthier and lower food costs, then you may be interested in learning how to maximise your hard work. Frances Eddy’s Grow Your Own Food Biointensive Gardening Course starts on Saturday, March 29th and runs for 4 consecutive Saturdays from 9am until noon. This course will get you started on growing some of your own food and is designed for beginner adults who have a minimum of 3ft x 3ft sunny garden space at home or you can join a community garden in Warwick. Basic tools can be purchased after the course. Frances has been teaching this course for 11 years and the cost is $125, which includes the course book. Discovery Wines will be hosting their next Wine Class, entitled We’re Goin’ Green!, on Saturday, March 29th. From 1pm until 2.30pm, attendees will receive a sample of 6 wines made in an organic style (also available for purchase), a charcuterie sampling, a greater appreciation of wine, and a plethora of knowledge that you can then show off to of your friends. The 3rd Annual Validus Re Running of the Bulls 5K, inspired by the traditional event in Pamplona, Spain will be at the West Parking Lot at the AIG Building on Sunday, March 30th. No bovine will be harmed in this race though as the Bulls will be elite runners with a delayed start who will try to catch up to the rest of the runners before the finish line. There is an 8.40am start for walkers and recreational runners and a 9am start for competitive runners. Entry fees are $37 for competitive runners/walkers and $30 for recreational runners/walkers. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the Women’s Resource Centre will observe with a month long calendar of events with the theme, Sexual Assault… It IS your Business – Do Something! The Opening Ceremony and Proclamation will be on Tuesday, April 1st on the steps of City Hall at noon, and will feature speakers and a school choir. This event is free to the public. Sign-in time is 8am and start time is 9am from Charities House on Point Finger Road. Late Registration will be available at a cost of $25. The first 100 people to register will receive a free goodie bag and there will be prizes for those who raise the most funds. It is estimated that, since 2008, our bee hives have decreased by 65% – what is happening to our little buzzing buddies? The Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce (BEST) are hosting a Bee Fair at BUEI on Saturday, April,12th from 11am to 3.45pm. There will be a Short Film and Panel Discussion from 2.30pm until 3.30pm, with Claire Jessey (Entomologist, Department of Environmental Protection) Tommy Sinclair (Bee Keeper), Carlos Amaral (Farmer), and Thad Murdoch (Scientist). There will also be stalls displaying bee keeping techniques and equipment, bee-friendly plants and products, school projects and activities for children, and fun merchandise. Under the Distinguished Patronage of Jekon Edness (Somerset Cup Match Captain) and Lionel Cann (former St. Georges Cup Match Captain), The Women’s Resource Centre invite you to participate in their Inaugural Golf Tournament, ‘Like’ Cup Match on the Greens at Port Royal Golf Course on Saturday, April 19th. This is a Captain’s Choice tournament with a 12.30pm shot-gun start and the prize-giving reception will begin at 4.45pm with catering by Bella Vista Grill. The cost is $150 per golfer with 4 golfers per team and the price includes green and golf cart fees, reception, food and prizes. The registration deadline is March 31st.
