July 30th, 2014: Bermuda Events Update

Morning Kids!

So….is anybody even reading this or have you all started the Cup Match festivities already?  I’m pretty sure that over 80% of people who are physically in work today have already mentally checked out.  Anyway, you should definitely read this, otherwise, how will you know what’s happening in Bermuda AFTER Cup Match?

0802 Bermuda National Ladies Hockey Team Jumble Sale

Since the weather was such a deterrent at the weekend, there’s a second chance to grab yourself a bargain at the Bermuda National Ladies Hockey Team’s Jumble Sale at Mount Saint Agnes Playground on Saturday, August 2nd.

This will run from 9am until noon with books, toys, baby items, furniture, household items, clothing, accessories and more on sale.

Proceeds will assist team participation at the CAC Games in November.

For more information, contact Joanne and Jennifer Chisnall on 295-4353 or 333-8304.

0806 Bermuda National Library Summer Film Series

Learn more about Bermuda’s history at Bermuda National Library’s Summer Film Series on Wednesdays in August.

Screenings will run from 11am each week in the Bermuda History and Cultural Studies Room.

Freedom Quest: Black in Bermuda 1616-1834 on Wednesday, August 6th was produced by the Department of Cultural Affairs in 1999. It examines the history of blacks in Bermuda between 1616-1834 with interviews and discussions with Dr. Clarence Maxwell, Dr. Pauulu Kamarakafego, Victoria Pearman and Craig Simmons. Running time is approximately 90 minutes.

Llewellyn Hollis, Fisherman on Wednesday, August 13th focuses on Bermuda’s fishing traditions, including the making of shark oil barometers, casting for bait, lures, and other arts of the sea. Featuring interviews with legendary Bermudian fisherman Llewellyn Hollis and his apprentice Keishunda Curtis, this documentary will inspire a new appreciation for the tradition-bearers that keep Bermuda’s culture alive. Running time is approximately 43 minutes.

LookBermuda documentary, Riddle of the Crest on August 20th examines the origins of the ship on Bermuda’s coat of arms, widely believed to be that of the Sea Venture. The film presents a compelling view that challenges this belief. Running time is approximately 30 minutes.

From traditional recipes to fishing techniques to stories from Bermuda’s whaling days, St. David’s: An Island Near Bermuda, screening on August 27th, is the first film to document this unique part of Bermuda and share a history that would otherwise be untold. Running time is approximately 91 minutes.

0828 Beauty and the Beast

TROIKA Bermuda are continuing with their mission to keep the drama on-stage, by giving young people the opportunity to get involved in dramatic art, song and dance, and will be bringing their latest production, Work in Progress #5: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, to the stage at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts.

Based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. Audiences will be transported to the heart of provincial life in a lovely French town. When Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice’s daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle’s taming of the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation back into a handsome prince has enthralled Broadway audiences for over 13 years.

This two hour magical tale will be filled with spectacular acting, costumes, special effects and set pieces, and is family-friendly, although not suitable for newborns.

Directed by Steven Huntsman and produced by Edith Caines, with choreography by Eric Bean Jr., the show will run from Thursday, August 28th until Saturday, August 30th. Doors open at 7pm and showtime is at 7.30pm each evening, with a matinee performance at 2pm on the Saturday.

Tickets are $45 for general admission, $60 for Bronze Donors, $100 for Silver Donors, $150 for Gold Donors and $250 for Platinum Donors. All tickets are available from www.pTix.bm.
