The Fairmont Hamilton Princess’ harbourside restaurant, 1609 Bar & Restaurant, reopened for dinner on Monday, March 16th.

The restaurant now will be open from 11am until 10pm. daily, serving lunch, dinner and cocktails in a casual and social atmosphere with a panoramic view of the harbour.

In addition, to kick off the Spring season, the restaurant is offering its Facebook fans a 15% discount from now until March 31st. Diners must Like the 1609 Facebook page and bring a print-out confirmation or show the connection on a smartphone or device to enjoy the discount.

Organisers promise that you are in for a treat at Saltus Grammar School’s Spring Concert on Friday, March 20th.

From 7pm in the Alumni Hall, there will be performances by the Saltus Jazz Band, Senior Orchestra, Wind Band, Junior Jazz Band, Stringendo, the iBow quartet, and the Vivace quartet.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and available from Saltus Reception (292-6177) or at the door.

Proceeds go to the Michelle Outerbridge Musical Opportunity Award.

 

Expect plenty of food stalls, fun castles and football at the Kappa Classic Youth Football Tournament at the National Sports Centre from Friday, March 20th to Sunday, March 22nd.

The fun will start at 6pm on the Friday, 9am on the Saturday, March 21st (with Opening Ceremonies starting at 8.30am) and 9am on the Sunday for the semi final and championship matches.

The Bermuda Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated has organised the Kappa Classic since 1999 providing a family fun day and sporting event that benefits the local football community in the age groups of Boys Under 8, Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14, as well as Girls Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14. This promotes a competitive football environment that challenges the skills of all players involved. The event has grown from year to year and in 2015 over 1,000 kids will be participating. Each team will play a minimum of three games and an All Star Team and an All Star Coach will be selected from each age group.

The event is free to the public and all are welcome.

The Kardias Club are holding a White Elephant Sale at The Bridge Club behind Aberfeldy Nursery on Saturday, March 21st.

This will run from 9am until 3pm and shoppers can also expect a play corner for children.

The Members of the Broad Arrow Lodge invite you to a Gala Charity Quiz Night at The Docksider Pub on Saturday, March 21st.

Hosted by Quiz Master Mike Bishop, the evening will begin with dinner and drinks at 7pm, followed by the quiz itself at 8pm. You can also expect prizes, raffles and an auction.

The cost is $50 for a team of 5 and all funds raised will be donated to The Women’s Resource Centre, Summerhaven and Outward Bound Bermuda.

Liquid, a members’ juried show featuring work in all media related to the subject of liquid, is opening at the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard on Sunday, March 22nd from 3.30pm until 5.30pm.

The show will remain open until April 26th and admission is free. The Arts Centre is open from 11am until 4pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

In honour of the United Nations International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade on Wednesday, March 25th, the African Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) Bermuda Foundation has organised a variety of events between March 22nd and March 28th.

Firstly, the Annual Commemorative Day of Remembrance Service will take place on Sunday, March 22nd.

This will start at 4pm and is a collaborative service with the ADHT Bermuda Foundation and the Cobb’s Hill Methodist Church congregation.

Session 1 of the ADHT Annual International Day of Remembrance Lecture Series, entitled Looking Back Critically, will take place on Tuesday, March 24th.

This will be at 6.30pm in the Blue Room at Bermuda College, in the form of an interactive presentation with presenters Dr. Roiyah Saltus from South Wales University and Mr. Cordell Riley from Bermuda College.

Dr. Saltus and Mr. Riley will look at the social and economic impact of our history and then explore with the audience ways in which we can use the lessons learned from our history to move forward.

The cost is $20 for adults and free for under-16s.

Join in the journey, and don’t forget to dance, at the Small Bites Big Sounds Concert on Saturday, March 28th, a musical extravaganza where you can experience the impact of the African drum on music in the west.

This unique evening’s entertainment will begin at 6.30pm in the Berkeley Institute Auditorium, highlighting the history of music from across the African Diaspora, featuring live music, a South African wine tasting, soft drinks, wine by the glass or bottle, and culturally relevant items on sale. There will also be a silent auction of original art from Mr. Robert Bassett.

Tickets are $50 and are available at Caesar’s Pharmacy in Somerset, BIU Credit Union, Sidekicks in Washington Mall, and Book Cellar in St. George’s.

Come and learn about the most recent discoveries in the illustrated presentation The Bermuda Turtle Project by Jennifer Gray at BUEI Talks on Thursday, March 26th.

Bermuda can and should be proud of its long history of sea turtle conservation, research and outreach. Jennifer Gray, the Bermuda Turtle Project Coordinator, will bring you up to date on the fascinating life history of these endangered species and how Bermuda is contributing to their global preservation. From nesting on beaches in Bermuda to satellite tracking of animals migration to distant shores you will be amazed by these gentle iconic sea turtles and their healthy abundance around the islands of Bermuda.

The lecture will start at 7.30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event. The BUZZ, a group concerned about the bee situation globally and locally who came together under the auspices of the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Task Force (BEST), has invited a well-known beekeeper, Ross Conrad, to visit Bermuda over the weekend of March 27th.

Ross owns and operates a “human-scale” beekeeping business, Dancing Bee Gardens, in Middlebury, Vermont and also regularly leads beekeeping workshops and classes throughout North America. His organic bee husbandry methods have proven enormously successful. His hives thrive despite the challenges of Varroa Mite, colony collapse disorder and other maladies that resulted in substantial loss of hives by other beekeepers worldwide. He learned his skills from the beekeeper and api-therapist Charles Mraz and his son, Bill. Ross is a former president of the Vermont Beekeepers’ Association and he is also the author of Natural Beekeeping: Organic Approaches to Modern Apiculture. As a regular contributor to Bee Culture, the US magazine on beekeeping, Ross proposes to record his visit and write an article on Bermuda beekeeping for a future edition of Bee Culture. Ross will be arriving late on Thursday, March 26th, departing on Sunday, March 29th.

On the Friday, he will be touring the island to visit beehive sites and to meet with local beekeepers, meeting with representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection, and will also be interviewed by Mix 106 at 10.50am.

On Saturday, March 28th, there will be two BEE Curious Workshops at Horticultural Hall in the Botanical Gardens. The morning session for Professional and Amateur Beekeepers will run from 9am until noon and will address Varroa and Other Pests and Diseases, Organic Pest/Disease Control, and Queens (including Hygienic) and Swarms.

The afternoon session for new Beekeepers and the General Public will run from 2pm until 5pm and will address Getting Started With Organic Beekeeping, Making Decisions On Beekeeping Equipment and Hive Location, and Basics Of Honey Bee Biology.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

GROOVE: Bermuda’s Ultimate Dance Workshop Marathon on Saturday, March 28th is focused on bringing dancers together with the industry’s top professional choreographers in a fun, challenging and non-competitive environment that fosters self-fulfillment and development.

This one-day event features intense master classes from the top working choreographers in the entertainment industry. Participants will also have the opportunity to benefit from a Q&A with the faculty as well as group photo opportunities with the faculty and participants.

Beginners Hip Hop and Soca Wukshop are open to all levels (beginner and fitness).

Beginners Hip Hop, instructed by Kioshi Burgess, will run from 9.30am until 10.30am at a cost of $10.

Contemporary, instructed by Rikkai Scott, will run from 10.45am until noon at a cost of $20 for early birds and $25 regular.

Hip Hop, instructed by Kaelynn Harris, will run from 12.15pm until 1.45pm at a cost of $30 for early birds, $35 regular.

Soca Wukshop (all levels), instructed by Neeks Money, will run from 2.30pm until 4pm at a cost of $30 for early birds, $35 regular.

Hip Hop, instructed by Sean Bankhead, will run from 4.30pm until 6pm at a cost of $30 for early birds, $35 regular.

Dancehall, instructed by Neeks Money, will run from 6.30pm until 8pm at a cost of $30 for early birds, $35 regular.

The Full Day Pass is a 5 class package which is inclusive of the following classes: Contemporary, Hip Hop (Kaelynn), Soca Wukshop, Hip Hop (Sean Bankhead) and Dancehall. The cost is $130 for early birds, $150 regular.

The Bermuda Bible Society presents their HikeBike Fundraiser on Saturday, March 28th.

Participants will leave from the Botanical Gardens at 10am, heading to Somerset Bus Terminal.

Groups are asked to wear their shirts and show their spirit and participants are encouraged to follow @BermudaBibles on social media and to share their Hike or Bike experience with the hashtag #hikebike4bibles.

Registration is $5 and Registration Collection Day is on March 26th from 11am until 2pm at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Hall. Funds raised will be used to purchase Bible-based literature for the Bermuda Youth Library.

After last year’s huge success, Pembroke Hamilton Club (PHC) will host its 2nd Annual Community Fun Day on Good Friday, April 3rd.

Pembroke Hamilton Club is a community sports club based in Warwick, playing in the Bermuda Football Association Premier Division. The PHC Foundation (Charity #727) has been established to provide support to the youth athletic program, education program, and scholarship program for PHC.

The day will kick off at 9am with a 1 Mile Run/Walk from Lindo’s in Warwick to the PHC Field, followed by a day full of fun for the whole family at the PHC Field, Middle Road, Warwick. From 10am until 7pm, all of Bermuda is invited to join in the fun with family and friends. Planned activities include fun castles, mechanical bull rides, kite flying, Gombeys, 5-a-side Football, Tug-O-War, music by DJ Chubb and much more.

Entry fees for the Run/Walk are $10 for adults and $5 for those under 18. Participants can register at RaceDayWorld.com or at the Sports Seller in Washington Mall. Prizes for the Run/Walk will be awarded to the top 3 male and female finishers in each category: Primary School, Middle School, High School, Adult and Masters (over 50).

The April edition of the monthly Ciné Club from L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will be showing Casse-tête Chinois (Chinese Puzzle) at 8pm on Tuesday, April 14th.

Screening in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI, this French movie with English subtitles tells the story of how a 40-year-old divorced father’s life is complicated when the mother of his two children moves to New York. Since he can’t bear them growing up far away from him, he decides to move there as well. Chinese Puzzle is the third chapter of the Spanish Apartment trilogy, after L’Auberge Espagnole and Les Poupées russes.
