March 9th, 2016: Bermuda Events Update

Morning Ladies and Gents!

page

I don’t think I even own many devices which don’t auto-update anymore but, just in case you do, don’t forget that we’ll be Springing Forward on Sunday for Daylight Savings Time, leaving winter well and truly behind us.

Waking up will probably be brutal for the first week or so, but at least we can relax and enjoy a more leisurely sunset with the extra hour of daylight at the end of the day.

Here is the latest update on new events that have been added to the Bermuda calendar since last week’s post – enjoy!

0312 Model Call

Calling all models in Bermuda, and anyone who has dreamed of modeling – now is your chance to walk with the best as the Bermuda Fashion Festival is scouting for this year’s event at their Model Call for Kids on Thursday, March 10th and Model Call For Adults on Saturday and Sunday, March 12th and 13th.

Bermuda’s premier fashion week is scheduled to run from Sunday, July 10th to Saturday, July 16th and is shaping up to be more of an international event than ever before, with the involvement of highly recognizable global brands and designers.  The names of international celebrities participating in Bermuda Fashion Festival will be revealed in coming weeks.

From 4pm until 6pm on Thursday, March 10th, the Model Call is an opportunity for children aged 5 and above to participate in Bermuda’s largest fashion event, Evolution Retail Show.  Teenagers up to 18 years are also encouraged to audition.

The Adult Model Call will be from 1pm until 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, March 12th and 13th and, this year, they hope to attract many new models, welcoming adults of any age and size, from any background.  There is a thrill to introducing someone new to the Bermuda Fashion Festival experience and they love finding a new diamond – that could be you.  Local models are included in Bermuda’s largest fashion event, Evolution Retail Show, as well the highly-anticipated International Designer and Local Designer runway shows.

All auditions will take place at the lower level of Pier 6.

Auditions are free and there is no charge to model in the fashion shows.

The latest in the BUEI Talks series will be a fascinating lecture on Nesting Sea Turtles on Thursday, March 17th.

Bermuda once had a thriving sea turtle nesting colony, however years of targeted hunting by humans caused this rookery to collapse. Dr Mark Outerbridge, Wildlife Ecologist for the Department of Conservation Services, will present what is known about the history of sea turtle nesting on Bermuda’s beaches, which includes the heroic efforts made by a few people in the 1960s and 1970s to restock Bermuda with thousands of green turtle eggs from Costa Rica.

This lecture will also describe a number of sporadic, natural nesting events recorded during the past 25 years and will end with a short sea turtle nesting video. During this lecture the audience will not only learn how to tell when a sea turtle has crawled upon a beach to nest but will be given the opportunity to participate in a beach monitoring programme.

The lecture will start at 7.30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event.  Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar and the full menu will be available from 6pm – please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount and note that it cannot be combined with any other special offers.  For dinner reservations call 295-4207.

Tickets for the lecture are $20 for members, $25 for non-members and available by calling 294-0204 or visiting Oceans Gift Shop at BUEI.
