Back by popular demand, BUEI Screens invites you to a fifth screening of Viceroy’s House on Wednesday, January 17th.
New nations are rarely born in peace… India, 1947: Lord Mountbatten (Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville) is dispatched, along with his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson), to New Delhi to oversee the country’s transition from British rule to independence. Taking his place in the resplendent mansion known as the Viceroy’s House, Mountbatten arrives hopeful for a peaceful transference of power. But ending centuries of colonial rule in a country divided by deep religious and cultural differences proves no easy undertaking, setting off a seismic struggle that threatens to tear India apart. This PG-13 rated drama has a running time of 106 minutes.
The film begins at 7.30pm in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium. Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event. Reservations are required. There are two new exhibits currently open at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall.
The Onions Gallery, and Studios A and B will feature a fresh show for professional and aspiring photographers. The Members Photography Show calls upon artists to submit works of all genres and styles to be showcased to the public featuring exceptional works from member artists.
The Edinburgh Gallery features the exhibition, Focusing on Our Abilities, sponsored by the Government of Bermuda Ministry of Health Aging and Disability Services Works created by users of the K. Margaret Carter Center (KMCC), a government trained intellectual disability production center that provides vibrant, ability focused rewarding programs and training. Users create art works and usable goods from various magazines that portray dominate colours.
Opening hours at BSoA are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays. The exhibition will run until Tuesday, February 6th.
Admission is free, although donations are appreciated, and all are welcome.

The Peace and Social Justice Committee of the Roman Catholic Church of Bermuda invites members of the Bermuda community to their final Wrap-Up Session (commenced in 2017) on Environmental Issues on Friday, January 19th.
From 7.30pm at St. Theresa’s Church Hall, this event will focus on The Bermuda Perspective and will feature experts from the Bermuda Community who will offer advice on how to honor and save God’s Creation, right here at home.
Find out what’s happening in Bermuda, ask questions and “get involved” and become a part of the solution to save our planet! This is a Call To Action for all of us!!
Their special presenters are Chaplain Dr. Kevin Santucci who will talk about how we can become involved in the Garden Ministry project , grow our own food and learn about the value of community garden growing, right here in our island community. Stratton Hatfield and Stuart Kriendler of Be Solar will answer questions about solar energy in Bermuda. How does it work? Is it viable? How can we start conserving energy and enjoying small give-backs? These are just some of the topics that will be discussed. John Paul Skinner of Waterstart will educate the community about some of the issues affecting the sea around us and how we as community can do better to value, honor and support the waters protecting our island. .
This event is free to the public and all are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Hosted by The Women’s Action Group, The Women’s March on Bermuda will be on Saturday, January 20th.
From noon at Queen Elizabeth Park (formerly Par-la-Ville Park), you are invited to join them to advocate for Women’s Rights.
The International Women’s March has become a bona fide movement. And to keep it going, we need to keep showing up. We need to show up for #MeToo. For #TimesUp and for each other.
This March will focus on even bigger, more systemic issues including that: 1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted in her lifetime (as well as 1 in 6 men).#MeToo; women make up half of the country of the U.S.A but only 19% of Congress; women earn 79 cents to a man’s dollar, and that percentage drops to 63 cents for Black women and 54 cents for Latina women; and there are more anti-abortion laws on the books now.
None of the issues went away in 2017, but progress can be seen. We need to let all of these women know that we have their backs in 2018 — and that means showing up.
This event is free to all and all women, men, and children are welcome. You are invited to bring a blanket to sit on.

From 10pm until close each week, Bermudian singer-songwriter Finny (Chris Finsness) will perform a mix of cover songs from the 60’s to today, as well as his own original songs.

The Bermuda Botanical Society invite you to a Walking Tour of Cooper’s Island on Sunday, January 21st.
From 1.30pm, the tour will meet at the gate to Cooper’s Island Park and will visit the restored woodland, Well Bay beach and Well Bay Hill to see the restoration areas and watch for turtles, continuing to the tip of Cooper’s Island, including the wildlife watch tower on Fort Hill. Parking is at Turtle Bay and the tour will be led by Alison Copeland.
The cost is $5 for members, $10 for non-members and places are limited.

BUEI Talks presents Spitfire Singh with Mike Edwards, MBE on Monday, January 22nd.
In 2007, British Airways pilot, Mike Edwards discovered a collection of WW2 aircraft locked away in a hangar in Delhi, India. Thus began a restoration and research project that resulted in Mike writing the book Spitfire Singh: A True Life of Relentless Adventure. Hear this fascinating account of how Harjinder “Spitfire” Singh and his cohorts overcame great challenges to become the unsung heroes of the Indian Air Force. Don’t miss this riveting presentation and the opportunity to purchase a copy of the book personally signed by Mike.
There will be a book signing from 7pm, before the lecture starts at 7.30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium. Help the community by being more helpful in a crisis with the Bermuda Red Cross’ Psychosocial First Aid Course starting on Friday, January 26th.
Bermuda Red Cross has identified the need to educate and train key persons in the community, due to the increase of anti-social behaviour and other critical incidents, to enable more people to be equipped to respond to these issues. It is their goal that certified participants will be included in our community response teams
This course will run over a 3-day period starting on Friday, January 26th and continuing on Saturday, January 27th and on Friday and Saturday, February 2nd and 3rd. The class will run from 8.45am until 5pm each day. Attendees must be able to commit to the full four days. The deadline for booking is Friday, January 16th.
The cost is $250 per person, which includes all materials and refreshments.

A stylish start to 2018, the Caledonian Society of Bermuda’s Annual Burns Supper, will be at the Hamilton Princess Hotel and Beach Club on Saturday, January 27th.
A Burns Supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of Scotland’s national bard Robert Burns, author of many famous poems and songs. A few examples include Auld Lang Syne (yes, the one we all sing at New Year), To a Mouse (the phrase “the best laid schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley” comes from this poem) and Tam O’ Shanter (considered by many to be one of the best examples of the narrative poem in European literature). You do NOT have to be a literary buff to enjoy this, you just have to enjoy delicious food with entertaining toasts and speeches.
The pre-dinner cocktail reception (cash bar) will be from 6.30pm until 7.30pm, with the five-course dinner beginning at 8pm.

Get your flashlights ready and join Friends of Hospice for their second annual Memorial Moon Walk on Wednesday, January 31st.
From 6.30pm at Chaplin Bay Beach, walkers will have a chance to walk and reflect on the lives of your loved ones along the trails from Chaplin Bay to Horseshoe Bay and back. The rain date is set for the following evening, Thursday, February 1st.
Registration will begin at 6pm at a cost of $5 per walker.

The Bermuda Boys’ Brigade and Church Girls’ Brigade are holding their 2018 Valentine’s Fair and Car Wash on Saturday, February 10th.
From 10am to 4pm at St. Paul’s Church Hall and car park in Paget, you can browse stalls with baked goods, books and DVDs, “Nearly New” goods, plants, toys, “Take a Chance” and White Elephant. There will be a fun castle and archery available on the field. Lunch will also be offered with the usual assortment of delicious homemade soups, chili, hotdogs, hamburgers, codfish balls and chicken wingettes.
The Car Wash is $20 for small and regular sized cars and $25 for large cars and vans. Funds raised will help the Brigades to run their programmes, buy their badges and supplies, and pay for outings, etc. for their 40+ boys, aged from 6 to 18 years old.

Based at their St. David location, they offer a number of exciting activities for campers aged 5 to 11 to participate in and have fun while learning gymnastics. They will also enjoy crafts, games and more.

Friends of Hospice invite you to join them for their Annual Hearts, Hats and High Tea event on Saturday, February 24th.
From 2pm until 5pm at the Fairmont Southampton’s Windows on the Sound, the tea includes dainty sandwiches and petit fours, entertainment by Tony Bari and Gita Blakeney-Saltus, door prizes; and, of course, a hat contest. Tables of up to 10 people are available.
As the charity arm of Agape House, the island’s only inpatient facility for the terminally ill, all proceeds from the Tea will directly benefit the hospice and the patients and their families who they serve.
