Happy Hump Day, Troops!
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend with only the good kind of mischief! I could definitely get used to a four-day working week, although catching up with all of Monday’s work on a Tuesday is pretty tough. Here is the latest rundown of Bermuda events to get your through to the next weekend:
Calling all 13 to 19 year olds – you are invited to visit the Teen Services Information Booth on Front Street at Harbour Nights on Wednesday, June 19th to take their Prevent Teen Pregnancy Quiz. This will be running from 6.30pm until 9pm and teens who complete the questionnaire will be entered into a draw to win one of two iPod shuffles and a $50 iTunes card. All entries will receive an instant prize. This is part of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Campaign and winners will be announced on Monday, June 24th. Dancer’s Delight, a night of Latin music courtesy of DJ Derek, awaits you at Margarita’s Grill on Thursday, June 20th. From 9pm until midnight, you can expect salsa and bachata all night with no cover charge. For more details, visit www.SalsaGoddess.me.
Another good reason to leave your bike or car at home on Fridays as Beau Rivage at Newstead’s Happy Hour will continue throughout the summer. As well as the view of Hamilton Harbour and Front Street from Beau Rivage’s Pool Bar, you can also enjoy cocktails, a BBQ and music courtesy of the DJs from VIBE 103. Drinks cost $6, the BBQ costs $12 and the first 50 ladies will receive 2 free drink tickets. The complimentary shuttle ferry will be running every 30 minutes from 5pm until 9pm. The Dog Training Club of Bermuda is bringing world-renowned animal trainer and behaviorist Kathy Sdao to Bermuda this month for two separate events. Firstly, the lecture, Becoming Doctor Dolittle, will be on Friday, June 21st at Somerfield Academy. From 6.30pm until 8pm, Kathy will introduce you to the basics of animal learning and how to develop willing partners in the training process. The cost is $20 for members or $25 for non-members. The second event will be a weekend seminar on Saturday, June 22nd and Sunday, June 23rd at the Visitor Center in the Botanical Gardens. So Many Choices: Understanding the Training Process will run from 9am until 5pm each day and aims to teach you the mechanical skills of marker training, how to get your dog to offer behaviours, and effectively reward your dog to train any behaviour from basic to complex. Bermuda’s newest contemporary reggae band will complete their six-week Spring tour on Friday June 21st. The Yellow Brick Road Band will be performing live at the Devonshire Rec. Door open at 8pm and admission is $10. For more information visit www.yellowbrickroadband.com.
The Barbados Association of Bermuda invite you to go ‘Out ta sea wid de Bajans’ at their Summer Cruise aboard the Uber Vida on Saturday, June 22nd. Boarding begins at 7.30pm for a prompt departure from #1 Car Park at 8pm, returning at midnight. Tickets cost $50, which includes food and music from DJ Rusty G, and a cash bar will be available. Local violin studio, Paget Suzuki Strings, is celebrating their 10 year anniversary with their Summer Time Strings on the Stage Concert on Sunday, June 23rd. This will be at 2pm in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Church Street and admission is free. The June edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be at BUEI on Sunday, June 23rd with the documentary Birders: The Central Park Effect, showing at 3pm. After the film, Andrew Dobson, president of the Bermuda Audubon Society will talk about birds in Bermuda and take audience questions. This will be followed by French drama, Renoir, at 5.15pm. Now in its third year, Heatwave Part III promises to be an unforgettable event as Gombey’s is transformed to an open-air beach nightclub with disco lights from 10pm on Saturday, July 6th. As well as last year’s Bodyguard and Renaissance Discos, Immortal Stone Love will be added to the lineup for 2013. If you’re a student aged between 12 and 14 who is interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), then Ascendant Group Limited have just launched a summer camp which could be perfect for you. The STEM Summer Camp will alllow students to explore these disciplines through robotics and HTML design and take related field trips. The camp will run the weeks of July 8th and July 15th and will be conducted by qualified STEM education professionals and engineers from BELCO and iEPC Limited. Early drop off and after-camp programmes available and students are invited to bring their own lunch or buy for $8 from the Ascendant Group Canteen. As part of the Bermuda Folklife Documentary Series, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs will be launching two new films on Thursday, July 11th. Woodworking will be screened at 6pm, followed by Building at 7.30pm. Both films will be shown at BUEI and the launch night special price for the DVDs will be $15. Entry is free. After the cricket is done, Team Soca and Team Reggae will face each other in the other big Cup Match clash! The 7th Annual Soca vs Reggae Official Cup Match After-Party will be at Tiger Bay in St. Georges on Friday, August 2nd, from 9pm (doors open at 8pm) until 3am. In the Soca Corner will be Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, DJ Rusty G and DJ Chubb with Demarco, King Jyrus and Prezidential Elite in Reggae Corner. A great opportunity to unleash your creativity as the Bermuda Department of Tourism presents the 18th Annual Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition on Saturday, August 31st. This will be at the usual location of beautiful Horseshoe Bay. Sculpting begins at 10am and finishes at 4pm, followed by judging and an awards presentation. Available categories, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes, are Families, Children 12 and Under, Teenagers 13 – 19, Open, Company/Organisation and Tourist. Not sure where to start? Well, you’re in luck as on Thursday, August 29th and Friday, August 30th, you can learn the tips, tricks, tools and techniques from 6pm until 7pm at the free Sand Sculpting Clinics. Admission is free for both spectators and participants, however you will need to submit an entry form to participate – contact bermudasandsculpture@bermudatourism.com if interested.
