Morning Kids!

 

Well, it might be Winter but don’t worry, there are still plenty of things to do in Bermuda.  Here’s the latest rundown:

0122 Latin Dancers Delight

Ever wanted to try Latin dance but don’t have time to sign up for a course of lessons? Salsa Friends are offering a more flexible solution with the return of their drop-in Latin Dance Classes for Beginners at their new location in the back bar in Docksider’s.  This class will take place every other Wednesday, starting from January 22nd, running from 8.15pm until 9.15pm.  Instructors are Salsa Friends co-founders Marshall and Teresa.  As first runners up in Bermuda So You Think You Can Dance 2013, this duo is more than qualified to give you a firm foundation that will have you dancing comfortably in just an hour.  All beginners are welcome, no previous experience is necessary and you don’t even need a partner, just some shoes comfortable enough to dance in and a smile.  Classes are $10 per person or $90 for a 10-class card.  No need to hurry home after the class though as the Salsa Friends are also returning to brighten up your Hump Day with Latin Dancer’s Delight in a new location.  This night of Latin music and dance will now be every second Wednesday from January 22nd in the back bar at Docksider’s.  From 9pm until 1am, you can enjoy salsa and bachata all night with no cover charge.  Come early and you can enjoy some food, drink, or even attend the drop-in salsa class from 8.15pm.  There are occasional themes to these parties so you are invited to keep an eye on the Facebook Group Salsa Friends to check. 0130 Yoga Centre Course

Starting Thursday, January 30th, the Yoga Centre on Victoria Street is offering a two-part 12 week courses for yoga newbies.  Beginner’s Yoga I is designed to provide basic principles of yoga beneficial for safe and renewed practice, introduce alternate options for various body types, and develop awareness and build confidence in the practice of yoga specific to individual student needs.  The course prepares students for Beginners II and Open Multilevel classes and will run on Thursdays from 5.30pm until 7pm.  The costs $260 and you can register by contacting 295-7525 or yogacentrebermuda@gmail.com.

 

 

0130 Derby Baby Screening

Whether you are interested in playing roller derby and becoming part of Bermuda’s first team or are just intrigued by this commonly misunderstood sport, the Bermuda Roller Derby Association invite you to come to a screening of the documentary, Derby Baby, on Thursday, January 30th.  This will take place at 6pm at Chewstick HQ.  Snacks will be available and the screening will be followed by a short discussion led by a roller derby player.  Admission is by giving a donation to Chewstick.  For more information, contact bermudarollerderby@gmail.com.

 

 

0201 Bermuda Tourism Love Month

Bermuda Tourism are bringing back their Love Month series of events from February 1st until the 28th.  The activities include a Couples’ Golf Tournament at Port Royal Golf Course from 8.30am until noon on Mondays and Thursdays with 50% off green fees. Couples will enjoy lush greenways at the home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, and receive 50% discount on greens fees, inclusive of a cart. Winners of the tournament will receive great prizes,compliments of the Department of Tourism.  Tuesdays are Champagne and Strawberries Afternoon Affair from 1pm until 3pm.  After complimentary access and a guided tour of Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, listen to a performance by one of Bermuda’s top saxophone players while enjoying champagne, chocolate and an assortment of fruit in the exquisite Rose Garden.  On Wednesdays, the Love Train City Tour will depart the flagpole at 11am, giving a guided tour of romantic spots in the City of Hamilton until noon. While on board, discover unique facts and photograph amazing historic sites.  Also on Wednesdays, at 12.30pm, you can sit back, relax and enjoy an afternoon Lovers Matinee featuring a top romantic film at Bermuda’s newest and coziest theatre. Be sure to stop by Speciality Grill to receive your complimentary movie snack to complete your movie going experience.  On Thursdays, Dockyard Glassworks will be offering a Demonstration from 2pm until 4pm. Watch talented artists create magnificent masterpieces using the process of glassblowing and flame working. Also, receive a specially made hand blown glass heart, compliments of the Department of Tourism.  On Fridays, meet at the flagpole from 11am where Town Crier Ed Christopher will be your tour guide for Shopping in the City. Learn historical facts about this charming, beautiful city and find great discounts while exploring until noon. The Love Cruise will depart Albuoy’s Point at 2pm on Fridays. While onboard, enjoy musical entertainment and complimentary refreshments as you tour Hamilton Harbour’s quaint water locations and romantic hideaways before returning at 3.30pm.  On Saturdays, you are invited to meet at the Town Hall in St. George’s for the Love Tales Walking Tour. From 10.30am, you will learn about Bermuda’s greatest love stories while discovering locally made products, finishing at 11.45pm, just in time for the historical reenactment at 12 noon.  Also on Saturdays, you can relax with a drink in Heritage Court at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and be serenaded by Robert and Jamie from 9pm until midnight.  All of these, with the exception of the Couples’ Golf Tournament, are free with no reservations required. 0201 Theresa Airey Workshop

Think that you can get more out of your phone camera than just Instagramming your food?  Bermuda Society of Arts’ Workshop on Digital Photography: Using an iPad and iPhone with Theresa Airey will be on 4 consecutive Saturdays, starting February 1st.  Theresa Airey is an international photographer and teacher, known for her skills in restoration, infrared photography and digital art. Each session will run from 10am until 4pm and you will need either an iPhone, an iPad or both and, on the second Saturday, a laptop. A list of apps to download to your iPhones and/or iPads will be emailed to you a week before the class begins. The cost is $400 for Members, or $440 for non-members,  for all four sessions. ​For more details, contact 292-3824 or bsoa@ibl.bm.

 

 

0202 Anthony's Annual Bridal Fair and Fashion Show

If you’re planning your upcoming nuptials, you won’t want to miss Anthony’s Annual Bridal Fair and Fashion Show on Sunday February 2nd.  This will be at the Fairmont Southampton Resort from noon until 5pm and will feature bridal attire, cake decorators, florists,caterers, photographers, videographers and everything else you need to make your special day perfect.  Admission is $10.  If you are a vendor interested in reserving a booth, contact 292-3889 or email infoanthonys@logic.bm.

 

 

0202 SuperBowl and After Party2

Even though it’s a completely different kind of Bowl, Strykz Bowling Lounge are hosting their 1st Annual Super Bowl and After Party on Sunday, February 2nd.  From 6pm, you are invited to wear your team jersey and watch the game on 2 large 8ft screens.  Bowl a strike to win a prize while hosts Jugglin Jason and China and Bussy will be playing old school reggae, dancehall, R&B and hip hop.  Admission is free and there will be a cash bar with food for sale.  For more information, or to make a reservation, contact 297-2727.

 

 

 

 

0202 FHP_SuperBowl Tailgate

The Fairmont Hamilton Princess promise to give you the closest experience to the Metlife Stadium that is possible in Bermuda at their Super Bowl Tailgate on the Terrace on Sunday, February 2nd.  Pre-game kicks off at 6:30pm and, as well as catching the game on the big screen, you can enjoy team decor, a BBQ, a burger bar on the bay, buckets of beer, and other ballgame favourites.  Field Access Tickets are a suggested minimum donation of $5, with proceeds to benefit Victor Scott Library project.  The Field Access Ticket includes pub and bar-style seating in the Princess Room, a cash bar, and you can purchase your own food off the Grill.  VIP Game passes are $50, which gets you preferred lounge seating in the Princess Room, two drinks, a buffet, access to the Grill and a private cash bar.  For more information, call 295-3000.

 

0130 Yoga Centre Course

A new 8-week course from The Yoga Centre will be starting on Thursday, February 6th.  Designed to inspire a regular meditation practice, Deepening Your Meditation respects all meditation traditions – Buddhist, Christian, Yoga etc. – and will provide students with an appreciation for the common thread between all meditation traditions, while honouring their differences.  The class will take place weekly at 7.30pm and students will develop an appreciation for the practice of meditation, explore its benefits to everyday living and dispel myths about what it is and what it is not.  The costs $150 and you can register by contacting 295-7525 or yogacentrebermuda@gmail.com.

 

 

0210 BMDS Skin Flick

The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society (BMDS) ask you not to be afraid of the title, as they present their latest production, Skin Flick by Norm Foster, running from Monday, February 10th until Saturday, February 15th.  This show is billed as a hugely entertaining comedy telling the story of four innocent people caught in the headlights of making an adult film. The day our protagonist loses his job at a costume outlet, he brings a movie home for his wife to see, so she can write a sample review for a job she is applying for as a film critic. It turns out the job has already been filled and the movie is a porn movie. Their best friend a recently fired cameraman tells them how lucrative those films can be, so they decide to make one and solve everyone’s financial problems in one fell swoop… Hilarious chaos ensues.  Unsurprisingly, this show is for adults only.  ​Showtime is at 8pm each evening and tickets cost $30 from www.bmds.bm or from their box office on 292-0848. 0213 Doula Speed Dating

Parents-to-be, do you want to have some help and guidance through this momentous and sometimes confusing experience?  If so, you may be interested in Doula Speed Dating at the Lotus Mind Body Spirit Wellness & Birth Centre on Thursday, February 13th.  From 7pm to 9pm, you will meet at least five practising doulas and get a chance to have a mini-interview with each one. The February edition of the Bermuda International Film Festival’s BIFFlix Monthly Film Series will be a screening of the film, The Great Beauty, on Sunday, February 23rd.  The screening will be at the usual venue of the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI at 5.30pm.  Tickets are $15 and available from www.pTix.bm.  For more details, visit www.biff.bm.

 

 

 

 

 

0307 Bermuda International Spring Masters Swim Meet

The 1st Annual Bermuda International Spring Masters Swim Meet will run from Friday, March 7th to Sunday, March 9th at Bermuda’s new 50 metre outdoor pool, with full Daktronics electronic timing.  The meet will consist of 25 metre events, with the competitive events being held within the deep tank. Warm ups and cool downs will be available in the shallow tank.  RaceTek systems will provide full full video assessment capacity for the meet. All athletes will have access to RaceTek race analysis technology on Satuday and Sunday.  Concession stands will be available on site over the duration of the 3 days, offering swimmers and spectators a variety of food and refreshments.  Evening warm up sessions on Friday and Saturday are from 6pm until 6.45pm, with events start at 7pm, while morning sessions on Saturday and Sunday are from 7.45am until 8.30am, with events starting at 8.45am.  A social will be held on Saturday night after the evening meet at Coco Reef Resort.  The entry fee is $90 per athlete, or $74 for early birds who register before February 7th, which is payable to the Bermuda National Sports Centre. 0322 BUEI Underwater Extravaganza

BUEI invite you to join them for a fun, sophisticated evening raising funds for education at their Underwater Extravaganza on Saturday, March 22nd.  The evening will begin with cocktails at 7pm, followed by dinner at 8pm with a spectacular silent auction, music by the Big Chill, a bioluminescent dance floor and more more on offer.  Dress code is underwater chic and the hue is blue.  Tickets are $275 per person and all proceeds will go towards the support of BUEI’s 2014 Education Campaign. For more information, contact marketing@buei.org or 294-0203.

 

 

0422 Peppercorn Ceremony

Those of you who love olde worlde-style pomp and circumstance, take note – the Annual Peppercorn Ceremony for this year will be on Wednesday, April 23rd.  During this ceremony, the Governor will will receive the Annual Rent of one peppercorn for the State House from the Master of Lodge St. George and then will hold a meeting of the Governor’s Council, attended by the Premier and Cabinet Ministers.  This quaint tradition includes lots of period costumes, military uniforms, a parade and a horse-drawn carriage, all helping transport you back to 1815 when the ceremony first started.
