Hold on to your hats – this is a monster edition! Can’t wait to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Then grab your date, whether that be a friend or significant other, for Masterworks’ Valentine High Tea Party on Thursday, February 13th. This will be at 3pm in the Masterworks Members Lounge, where you can relax and enjoy views of the Botanical Gardens at this pre-Valentine’s celebration. There are three exhibits currently showing at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. The Onions Gallery will be exhibiting the Members Photographic Show, a wonderful mix of all styles of photography, with photos of creatures from the deep, beautiful bright flowers, stunning Bermuda skylines and more. In the Edinburgh Gallery, H-appy Art, presented by Theresa Airey, will be a showcase of some of the amazing work achieved in her popular digital art class. Pieces by Theresa and her students are exhibited in a collection of happy colours and intriguing insights. Studios A & B feature a collaboration between both galleries in the City Hall as The National Gallery presents YCA (Youth Camera Action) exhibits photographs taken by BNG’s Youth Camera Action Group. YCA teaches middle school students photographic skills and perspective, encouraging them in self reflection and developing their creativity and imagination. Still valiantly clinging to your New Year Resolution of eating more healthily? International Imports (The Chef’s Shop) on Par-la-ville is hosting two separate Hearty Cooking Classes with Brendan Huttick of Lemon Tree Cafe. The first is on Thursday, February 13th and the second is on Wednesday, February 19th, with the menu including Parmesan and herb Crusted Salmon with chickpea and spout salad, quinoa salad with spinach and onions, lemon pepper grilled asparagus with olive oil, caveman cakes (seed and nut bars) and chocolate and oatmeal cluster cookies. Two of my favourite things are celebrated at the Bermuda Society of Arts NOT Valentine’s Day Champagne and Chocolate Tasting at 6pm on Thursday, February 13th. Promising to be an evening of decadence, Michael Robinson from Burrows Lightbourn will present a six sumptuous sparkling wines and champagnes from around the world in his own inimitable style while local chocolatiers will complement the bubbles with their own delicious creations. In recognition of Black History Month, the U.S. Consulate and the Bermuda National Library are partnering to screen the film 10,000 Black Men Named George on Thursday, February 13th. The 89-minute film is rated R and tells the true story of union activist Asa Philip Randolph’s efforts to organize the black porters of the Pullman Rail Company in 1920s America. The screening will start at 6pm on the upper level of Bermuda National Library. Spaces are limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. If you enjoy listening to and singing some soothing and deeply relaxing yoga sounds, you may be interested in joining a new weekly Candlelight Meditation Chant Group on Thursdays at My Sereni-Tea. At 6.45pm each week, the group usually chants to the accompaniment of very simple guitar tunes and drum rhythms, using an ancient meditation method helps to control stress and negative emotions, calm down the mind and improve general well-being. Dress in your favourite shade of red for the Winter Passions Dance on Friday, February 14th. This mature event for over-30s will take place at Crawl Club, also known as Hamilton Parish Workman’s Club. This will take place at the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) building from 10am until 2pm, and is an opportunity for you to talk with medical professionals and get the heart support you need, including information sessions, giveaways, heart checks and more. The 19th Annual Shiai, an invitational martial arts tournament sponsored by Sensei Roots, will take place from 1pm at Pembroke Sunday School on Sunday, February 16th. If you’re tired of all the hearts and flowers, then something a little different will be happening at Outback Sports Bar on Sunday, February 16th. The 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off will begin at 4pm and will include 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for best overall Chili, drink specials, a 50/50 draw, a special “food expert” judge, and tortillas and rolls will be provided. The entry fee is $20 for spectators and $10 for participants. Rules will be emailed to all cooks one week before the competition. Red Steakhouse and Bermuda Latin Vibes are rounding off the weekend in style with their Valentine’s Weekend Finale, the first in their Salsa Sundays on Sunday, February 16th. From 7pm until 10pm, you can enjoy a full Latin experience with a free wine tasting selection of regional wines, tasty tapas, music and dance. There will also be a free salsa and bachata dance lesson and the opportunity to practice your new moves on the dance floor afterwards. The Cannabis Awareness Network are hosting an event entitled Cannabis vs Cancer on Monday, February 17th. From 7pm at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club, they will share links to research demonstrating the ability of cannabis compounds to fight cancer, and Skype-calling Dr. Lester Grinspoon, Janet Sweeney and Dr. Robert Melamede, who are major researchers into the properties of cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. Physicians, pharmacists and all members of the community are invited to participate and ask questions of the featured doctors. This event is free.
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) is hosting Annapurnas and Everest with Andrew Stevenson, the next in their Citizen Science Lecture Series on Tuesday, February 18th. Andrew will be showing a 15-minute shortened version of his award-winning documentary film on the Annapurnas, “Paving Shangri La” and will be giving an illustrated lecture on the Annapurnas and the Everest region. Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The lecture itself will start at 7.30pm. Fr. Attilio Morelli, Pastor of St. Michael Church in Paget, is hosting a class entitled, In The Beginning: A Journey in Time to the Origin of the Universe Flying on the Wings of Holy Scriptures, Science and Culture on Wednesday, February 19th. From 7.30pm, Fr. Morelli will use his unique blend of expertise in religious and biblical studies, physics and cosmology and Jewish-Christian traditions, to take attendees on a journey full of surprises on the Book of Genesis in the light of Jewish and Christian tradition and Mysticism, modern science and cosmology and cultural anthropology. Part six of the Bermuda Sub-Aqua Club’s Winter Film Series will be screened at the BSAC Clubhouse in Admirality Park on Wednesday, February 19th. Each Wednesday evening of the film series going forward, until the finale on March 16th, they will be screening a one hour segment from the BBC Oceans documentary series. The show follows a team of intrepid adventurers – explorer and expedition leader Paul Rose, maritime archaeologist Dr Lucy Blue, marine biologist Tooni Mahto and conservationist Philippe Cousteau Jr, grandson of Jacques Cousteau – as they undertake a journey to discover the world beneath the waves. Each mission sees the experts living together on a dive boat and shows the disappointments and dangers they face as well as the successes of each trip. Diving in some of the planet’s most challenging environments, beneath frozen Arctic ice-sheets, the Caribbean’s mysterious black holes and the deep submerged caves of Mallorca they reveal new mysteries about our oceans. Follow Mitchell’s travels to Cuba to take lessons from an 84-year old Cuban tap dancer. The culmination of an intensive one-week workshop, the Somersfield Primary department presents Harlequin, a children’s opera based on an Italian folktale on Friday, February 21st and Sunday, February 23rd at Somersfield Academy. Harlequin is the story of how a little boy in Italy, during the period of the Renaissance, overcomes his fear of ridicule and learns the importance of self-confidence and friendship. This performance is co-directed by Judy and Sanford Jones, co-founders of Youth Opera International Inc., with Mrs. Janice Pearman performing the Soprano, and the children showcasing the results of the workshop, during which they received instruction in singing, dancing and acting, as well as experiencing first-hand the fine nuances of a classical art form. Showtime is at 7pm on the Friday and 5pm on the Sunday. Regular tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Dinner and show tickets, which include a slice of pizza and drink, are $30 for adults and $15 for children. The St. George’s Foundation invite you to attend what promises to be a fascinating lecture by Beau Evans on Wednesday, February 26th. The First American War on Slavery follows the exploits of Captain Stephen Decatur after his loss of the USS President, which was captured by the British and towed to Bermuda in January 1815. It was during this action that Midshipman Richard Sutherland Dale was wounded and died shortly thereafter in St. George’s, becoming the last casualty of the War of 1812. Despite losing the finest ship of the then fledgling US Navy, Decatur moved on to achieve a series of naval victories against slave traders of Mediterranean North Africa and became one of the US Navy’s most revered heroes. The lecture will be held at The World Heritage Centre on Penno’s Wharf. Wine will be on sale from 6pm and the lecture itself will start at 6.30pm. Admission is $10. Registration is now open for the 8th Annual Lindo’s to Lindo’s 10K Run and 4 Mile Walk on Sunday, March 9th. Starting from Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick at 8.30am, the run/walk will finish at Lindo’s Market in Devonshire. Registration costs vary between $20 and $40 depending on whether you are in the adult or junior category and whether you choose the competitive run, non-competitive run, competitive walk or fun walk. This is a fundraising event, with part proceeds going to the Bermuda Diabetes Association, and is organized by Mid Atlantic Athletic Club and sanctioned by BNAA. Beau Rivage Restaurant are welcoming special guests from Harvard University in a unique performance on Sunday, March 16th. Direct from Harvard, the legendary Hasty Pudding Theatricals will be returning to Bermuda once again to perform their unique brand of student-written theatre (kind of like pantomime for grown-ups with an all-male cast). This is their 166th production and the show, Victorian Secrets, will be on Wednesday, March 19th until Friday, March 22nd at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall. Showtime is at 8pm nightly.
