October 3rd, 2018 Bermuda Calendar Update

Can you believe it’s October already?! Halloween is just around the corner and the special holiday events are already starting to pour in. Here’s your update with all the latest events that have been added to the calendar since last week. And as always, don’t forget to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of all upcoming event, including those previously covered in previous posts.
Boasting an authentic Bermuda experience, Made In Bermuda Nights serves as the staple visitor entertainment outing and is back by popular demand, returning with the Gombey Fest Edition on Thursday, October 4th.
From 7pm until 1pm at Fort Hamilton Park, you can join the launch of this Gombey Festival Weekend, full of activities sponsored in part by the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs. Enjoy performances featuring the famous Wall Street Band, Sheila Smith, and Arijahknow Livewires, with DJ Chubb finishing off the night. The event seeks to attract audiences both foreign and domestic with its variety of local artists, party atmosphere, and fusion of music, art, and inspiration with Bermudian culture.
Made In Bermuda looks to promote Bermuda – her culture and her people with unique activities deeply connected to Bermudian tradition and art. Please note this event will not include a performance from the Gombeys.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs, Goslings, and PinkSand Entertainment.

As part of the Gombey Festival 2018, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs invite you to join them for Dance of the Diaspora: A Gombey Festival Film Showcase on Friday, October 5th.
From 6pm until 8pm at Specialty Cinema, there will be a movie screening of ‘Play, Jankunú Play – The Garifuna Wanaragua Ritual of Belize’ and several short films from scholar and filmmaker Wills Glasspiegel, who will be present for a Q&A session at the end.
This is a free event, with complimentary tickets are available at the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
The annual Bermuda International Gombey Festival Showcase will take place on Saturday, October 6th.
This will be held from 5pm until 9pm at the Main Show Ring in the Botanical Gardens. Bring a blanket or chair and head to the hillside or bleachers to watch Bermuda’s 6 Gombey troupes display their passion and artistry. The showcase is to include special international guests. Refreshments will also be available for purchase. (Rain Date is Sunday, October 7th.)

Masterworks Museum of Art is looking for assistance in going green and welcomes you to join them at a party in The Secret Garden on Saturday, October 6th.
The party is from 7pm until Midnight at 11 Grape Bay Drive, where you can expect an enchanted evening in one of Bermuda’s most magical gardens. Dance under the stars with DJ PM and enjoy cocktails by the Blind Pig. Local food vendors will also be on site to tempt your taste buds, with the Salty Lime providing a Taste of Mexico, Taste offering the Spices of India, and BulliSocial bringing Wholesome American bites. Master of Ceremonies is Kia Wolffe.
Tickets are $175, which includes a welcome cocktail and dinner, and are available for purchase from www.Ptix.bm. You are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Bottles of wine and champagne are also available for pre-purchase. Please do not drink and drive, as there will be taxis available for hire from 11pm.
The museum hopes to raise funds to install solar panels in order reduce the electricity output and costs of keeping artworks secure, amongst other projects with this event.

The restaurant at Belmont Hills invites you to join them for a delightful Brunch at Blu every Sunday, starting October 7th.
From 11:30am until 2pm at Blu Bar & Grill, you can sit back, relax and enjoy the a la carte Brunch Menu, as well as specials on Champagne, Mimosas and a Bloody Mary Bar for $5.95 each.

Embracing the uniqueness of our African Heritage, Royalty: An African Extravaganza is a plus-size fashion show that will take place on Sunday, October 7th.
From 4pm until 6pm at The Hamilton Seventh Day Adventist Church Hall, you can view authentic, one-of-a-kind pieces from Africa. Like royalty is how you feel when you put on these beautiful African print garments, which will be available for purchase after the show, and are sure to have you not just be outstanding, but stand out. This is the second edition of this fashion show with hopefully many more to come.
There will be refreshments offered by Bermuda Cupcake Company and Snowball Shack, as well as the presence of other vendors including Nubian Nook Bookstore, Just Hanging, Natural Blessings and more.

Enjoy a seaside version of the world’s largest Volksfest at Dock-toberfest on Friday, October 12th.
From 6pm until 10pm at The Dock at Waterlot Inn, there will be live entertainment by Mike Hind, dressed in lederhosen, in addition to a full Bavarian buffet. The feast will include Weisswurst, Schnitzel, Spatzle, Bier Fondue, Apfelstrudel and “And Union” Bavarian Beer.
The cost is $79 per person, plus 17% gratuities. Reservations are required.

Closet Cleanse For A Cause, a fashion fundraiser come just in time for fall will take place on Friday, October 12th and Saturday, October 13th.
From 10am until 4pm at Elbow Beach Cottage, you can browse through a collection of gently-used, high quality apparel, accessories and games for sale, in order to raise funds for Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and The Hope Academy.

A 5k Law Enforcement Torch Run for charity will take place on Saturday, October 13th.
This race starts at 8:30pm at Police Field in Devonshire, and ends at the National Stadium where Special Olympics will be holding their track and field events.
Sign-up is open online at www.RaceDayWorld.com. All proceeds from the race will aid Special Olympics Bermuda.

Foodies won’t want to miss out on the exciting series of events celebrating food, wine and friendly competition, at the City Food Festival which will see 6-8 amateur and experienced chefs go head-to-head in competition from Wednesday, October 17th, until Saturday, October 20th.
This year’s event kicks off with Chef’s Table Competition Round One: Appetizers on Wednesday October 17th, followed by Chef’s Table Round 2: Entrees on Thursday, October 18th. During these preliminary rounds, each Chef will be given five ingredients they must include, but are not are not limited to, to create a mouth-watering dish. The competing chefs have also been tasked to create samples that patrons can taste while the chefs recreate them live for the judges.
Rounds One and Two will take place from 5:30pm until 9pm on the lower level of Pier 6.
The winners from Rounds One & Two will advance to the Chef’s Table Finals on Saturday, October 20th. This will also be held at Pier 6 where guests can enjoy an intimate Rum Dinner presented by Fourways Catering and Bacardi Rum. The evening starts at 7pm with a welcome cocktail, followed by a sumptuous 4-course meal featuring an exclusive menu paired with Bacardi rums. Some rums are mixed into cocktails, some are cooked into the dishes and others are served neat. Participants will learn about rum and how it’s made while sipping cocktails and enjoying the dishes presented by Fourways. Once the entrees have been served, the Chef Competition Final will begin and the two winning chefs from the preliminary rounds will be tasked with creating dessert samples for the patrons – the final course of the meal.

The City of Hamilton are offering a special bonus for those who purchase two or more tickets, you will be entered into a draw to attend the exclusive Bacardi Bartender Competition on October 19th. The Festival has also partnered with Goslings who will provide a welcome cocktail as well as complimentary red and white wines for Rounds One and Two.

Autumn is here, with its veritable celebration of colour, and it’s time to find something for the kids to do over the first mid-term break of the year. Luckily, Masterworks is offering a Fall Mid-Term Art Camp from Monday, October 22nd until Friday, October 26th.
During the week, campers will work on diverse projects using a myriad of materials to create a portfolio of Masterpieces based on an autumnal theme. The portfolio will include mixed media creations using watercolour, acrylic, collages, drawing and 3d Art pieces, always with a touch of shades of the season. The camp is for students between the ages of 5 and 12.
Drop-off is between 8:30am and 9am, and children must be collected by 5:30pm at the latest, or late fees will be applied.
The cost is $300 for members or $350 for non members. Hot lunch is available for purchase through Salty Lime.

Therapeutic Yoga for Low Back Pain & Tension
, a 7-week therapeutic yoga practice to work with individuals with recurring low back pain and/or tension will start on Tuesday, October 23rd.
This will be held from 5:30pm until 7pm, every Tuesday, at the Yoga Centre on Victoria Street until December 4th. Students will come away with a progressive series of simple movements that strengthen and support muscles in the abdominal core, back body, pelvis, hips and feet. The course has a strong focus on adapting to individual conditions and issues. No previous yoga experience is required.
The course is taught be a Yoga Alliance 500hr teacher, Certified in Essential Yoga Therapy Low Back Program®.
The cost is $175.

You are invited to pick a side and join The Pink Beach Club for a heavenly and hellish event to remember at Angels & Demons Halloween Party on Friday, October 26th
The event will be held from 8pm until 1pm, with four hours of open bar and culinary highlights from 9pm until 10pm. Entertainment will be provided by The Big Chill.

The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) invite you to join them at the 2nd Annual Small Business Awards on Sunday, November 11th.
This will take place on the Upper Level of Pier 6, from 5pm until 11pm, where you can celebrate the achievements of local small businesses at this award-giving ceremony. Last year’s event was sold out, so don’t miss out on this opportunity, to dine, dance and party with small business owners that are doing big things.
