BUEI Screens presents Vita & Virginia on Sunday, September 8th.
Set amidst the bohemian high society of 1920s England, Vita & Virginia tells the scintillating true story of a literary love affair that fuelled the imagination of one of the 20th century’s most celebrated writers. Vita Sackville-West (Gemma Arterton) is the brash, aristocratic wife of a diplomat who refuses to be constrained by her marriage, defiantly courting scandal through her affairs with women. When she meets the brilliant but troubled Virginia Woolf (Elizabeth Debicki), she is immediately attracted to the famed novelist’s eccentric genius and enigmatic allure. So begins an intense, passionate relationship marked by all-consuming desire, intellectual gamesmanship, and destructive jealousy that will leave both women profoundly transformed and inspire the writing of one of Woolf’s greatest works. 2018 / Romantic Drama / NR / 110mins.

As part of ThinkFest 2019, ThinkMedia presents a series of though-provoking events, with the next one: Black Stories Matter: Why We Must Write, Teach and Pass on the Stories of the Lions on Tuesday, September 10th.
Black stories matter… will address the ways in which the revisionist propaganda in the work of white authors and historians writing on slavery in Bermuda attempt to absolve white enslavers of culpability in the waking nightmare that was chattel slavery here in Bermuda, the ‘why’ behind the need to peddle this lie and the weaponisation of this myth to create the idea that Black Bermuda, then and now, has precious little about which to complain. The talk will be given by author Ajala Omedele, starting at 6pm in the North Hall at the Bermuda College.
Tickets are $20 for the Group rate (minimum party of 4), $30 for Standard tickets, $125 for patrons, or $250 for sponsors. To purchase your tickets, visit https://think.bm/events/.
The Art of the Dead: An Archeological Journey of Discovery will take place on Thursday, September 12th.
Catherine Draycott is a former artist and journalist, with doctorate in classical archaeology from Oxford university. She currently lectures at Durham University. Her research focus is on the neighbours of the Greeks in Anatolia (modern Turkey) and how to use their art and architecture to understand a place that was historically significant, but lacking in written records.
From 5:30pm until 8pm in the North Hall at Bermuda College, this talk will take people through the author’s research on tombs in the region now known as Turkey, showing the great variety of memorials that existed, problematic cases and new interpretations, and how tying together overall patterns of representation can reveal dynamics that would not otherwise be noticed. It will focus on ancient Western Anatolia or Asia Minor, now western Turkey—a rich area that the Persians conquered early and which became a major staging ground for the Greco-Persian wars. While written sources are scarce, the area is well-known for its tombs, which flourished after the Persian conquest, and some of which carry rich memorial art. The talk will show how this art evinces social and cultural identities that emerged as people who were in many ways related to their Greek neighbours variously positioned themselves within a new Persian Empire. This talk begs the questions: Why is Archaeology so white? And what can we do about it? Archaeology has traditionally been a subject in which black and minority ethnic communities are poorly represented among students, academic staff and field professionals. Hypothetically, this is due to institutionalised ideas about what archaeologists study. Catherine will present some background information on statistics, current debates and problems, and open the floor to attendees to share their experiences, views of archaeology and ideas for change.
Tickets are $15 for the Group Rate (minimum party of 4), $25 for Standard tickets thereafter, $125 for Patrons, or $250 for Sponsors. Tickets can be purchased online at http://think.bm/events/ to purchase your tickets.
Bermuda’s Economic Train Wreck: The Financial Sector’ s Hand in Crashing Our Economy and Policy Implications will take place on Tuesday, September 17th.
The speaker is Robert Stubbs, former Head of Research for Bank of Bermuda. For twelve years, he produced the bank’s publicly published global macroeconomic research integral to the formation of the bank’s global investment strategy, providing the investment management framework for the bank’s in-house mutual funds and institutional and private client global investment assets.
In 2015, Robert began in-depth, data-driven economic research and analysis of the island’s decline, studying the origins of and solutions to the crisis. He is a Chartered Financial Analysts, holds an International Bond Dealers Diploma (ICMA) and has completed the ACAS actuarial exams. His research examines errors in economic policy implemented by successive Bermuda Governments over the course of the past few decades, bearing direct responsibility for precipitating and perpetuating the island’s entrenched economic crisis. The presentation concludes by outlining an economic stimulus programme for the island and sketches the modernising financial and economic policymaking reforms Bermuda needs to adopt to support our recovery and prevent similar economic instability and dislocations forming again in the future.
The lecture is from 6pm until 8pm in the North Hall at Bermuda College.
Tickets are $15 at the Group Rate (minimum party of 4), Early Bird tickets are $20 until September 7th , thereafter Standard tickets are $25, $125 for patrons, or $250 for sponsors. Tickets are available to purchase from https:/think.bm/events/.
What is the truth about the current state of tourism and what do we need to do about it? Cordell Riley will discuss this topic in Getting Beyond the Spin? Is Tourism Better Under an Authority? on Thursday, September 19th.
Cordell is the Institutional and Research Coordinator for the Bermuda College, a position he has held since June 2014. Prior to that Cordell was the Managing Director of Profiles of Bermuda, a company he founded in 1998. The firm conducts human resource assessments, training and development, as well as market, business and tourism research. Previously a government statistician, as well as the Market Research Officer for the Department of Tourism, Cordell has authored numerous articles in social statistics, tourism and human resources; and has spoken at a number of local and international conferences. While at the Department of Tourism, Cordell utilised tourism forecasting methods to assist with marketing and planning. He also reintroduced the annual 10-year review which had not been published in nearly two decades. While tourism has enjoyed record numbers, this has come at the expense of air visitors which have seen just moderate growth. This paper will truthfully examine the challenges faced by tourism and what may be required to reverse the current inverse relationship between air and cruise visitors.
The lecture is from 6pm until 8pm, in the North Hall at Bermuda College. Tickets are $15 for the Group Rate (minimum party of 4), $20 for Early Birds who purchase before September 8th, and $25 thereafter, $125 for patrons and $250 for sponsors.
The Festival concludes with Vacations for Liberation? Bermuda, Black Tourism, and the Global Politics of Travelling While Black on Sunday, September 22nd.
The lecture is led by Theodore Francis, an Assistant Professor of History at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. After graduating from Morehouse College, Theodore earned his M.A. & Ph.D. in Caribbean-Atlantic World History at the University of Chicago. He teaches courses on African-American, Caribbean and United States History. In addition, he advises the campus chapter of the National Association of Coloured People (NAACP), the International Students Association, and YNA Fellowship, an organisation focused on mental health awareness and suicide-prevention. Francis’ research interests focus on the history of segregation and Black leisure travel in the Caribbean and the Americas. He is currently working on a manuscript exploring the role of African American tourism in the Caribbean civil rights struggle to desegregate the British Colonial Island of Bermuda in the 1960s.
His presentation will explore how segregation created barriers, complications, and unforeseen opportunities for black travel within the island, the wider Caribbean region and the United States. Specifically, it examines how Bermuda’s black tourism sector – including guest house managers, black travel agents, musicians, taxi drivers, owners of clubs and tour services, etc. – played a key role in the struggle against transatlantic segregation during the early to mid-twentieth century. Also, it explores how their businesses were informed by the island’s civil rights politics. It closes by considering the ways that Bermudian black tourism pioneered some of the business ideas and practices utilised by contemporary travel corporations and reflects on the lingering twenty-first century issues of traveling while black.
The lecture is from 4pm until 6pm in the North Hall at Bermuda College. Group tickets are $15 each (min party of 4), and Early Bird tickets are $25 until September 10th, Standard tickets are $30 thereafter, $125 for patrons and $250 for sponsors.
An all access pass to the full series of ThinkFest events is available for $99. Tickets are available on https://think.bm/events/.

Back for a fourth showing, BUEI Screens presents The Biggest Little Farm on Thursday, September 12th.
The Biggest Little Farm follows two dreamers and a dog on an odyssey to bring harmony to both their lives and the land. When the barking of their beloved dog Todd leads to an eviction notice from their tiny LA apartment, John and Molly Chester make a choice that takes them out of the city and onto 200 acres in the foothills of Ventura County, naively endeavouring to build one of the most diverse farms of its kind in complete coexistence with nature. The land they’ve chosen, however, is utterly depleted of nutrients and suffering from a brutal drought. This summary at the end of the article is really useful. It would be great if the Calendar View had the option to show events like these, while not showing the recurring events, which are available to see elsewhere.
And there could be a section to see upcoming Non-Recurring events.
Thank you for your comment, this is a great suggestion that we will certainly consider. The Quick Recap Section at the bottom of the post each week is where you can see all of the upcoming One-off (non-recurring)events on the calendar, which is why recommend subscribing to receive the post in your inbox weekly, otherwise you can access it from the Blog Section each week.
