Happy World Nutella Day – I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to celebrate this special and delicious holiday! Hope that perks up your Hump Day – if not, well, here’s the latest rundown of what’s happening in Bermuda:
Interested in a different type of happy hour which will develop both your creativity and your confidence? Improv Bermuda presents Friday Laffy Hour at CV Cafe on the first Friday of each month, starting this Friday, February 7th. Not just for quick-witted extroverts, teacher Toby Butterfield will guide the play session of facilitated improv games designed for total beginners, in a fun and supportive atmosphere. This will run from 6pm until 8pm and the cost is $5. CV Cafe will also have wine, beer and other goodies available for purchase. All pregnant women, nursing mothers and babies are welcome at the next Monthly Series Meeting from La Leche League of Bermuda on Saturday, February 8th. This will start at 10.30am in the First Floor Conference Room of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and will be on the topic, Getting to Know your Baby. BUEI are hosting a Lionfish Dissection at 3pm on Saturday, February 8th. This will be an opportunity to see these beautiful creatures up close and learn about the threat they post to our oceans. Calling all skateboard enthusiasts, you are invited to come out for some skateboarding fun and fundraising at Finn’s Birthday Fundraiser Skate Day on Sunday, February 9th. This will take place at #1 Car Park on Front Street and will run all day from 9am to 5pm, with the big guys on hand to help the little guys. Donations will be collected for entry fees and all funds collected will go to the building of the new skate park. Bermuda Urban Park Association Charity #921.
Immersing your child in the exciting world of the oceans and ocean exploration, BUEI are running a series of educational and fun Spring Camps for 7 to 13 year olds. Dabble in Frozen Seas will run from Monday, February 10th until Friday, February 14th and will explore global warming and global extremes. Dabble in the Deep 1 will run from Monday, February 17th until Friday, February 21st, with a focus on Bermuda’s bioluminescence, fluorescence, and Beebe’s denizens of the deep. From Monday, March 31st until Friday, April 4th, Dabble in Sharks will cover everything one needs to know about sharks from current shark research, shark conservation, shark attack behavior, sharks past and present and the importance of the Sargasso Sea to some sharks’ reproduction. Finally, Dabble in Prehistoric Seas from Monday, April 7th to Friday, April 11th, will start with the creation of the Earth and travelling through time to get up close and personal with the variety of life in the savage prehistoric seas. For each camp, many fun, learning activities and games have been developed and planned that incorporate Science, Math, English, Social Studies, Art and some Theatrics. Focusing on Bermuda’s cultural history, Bermuda National Trust’s Discover Our Unique History Camp will run from Monday, February 10th to Friday, February 14th at Waterville on Pomander Road in Paget. 8 to 11 year olds will have the opportunity to spend time at Bermuda’s historic sites such as Verdmont, Tucker House, the National Museum and Carter House. Afternoon activities will include talks about the wrecks around Bermuda, reenactment of the Sea Venture’s journey to Bermuda, fun arts and crafts, baking and games. The camp will run daily from 8.30am until 3pm at a cost of $245, or 5pm with aftercare at a cost of $325. A chance to flex your mental muscle at the Trivia Quiz Night at Taste One Four One on Monday, February 10th. Part five of the Bermuda Sub-Aqua Club’s Winter Film Series will be screened at the BSAC Clubhouse in Admirality Park on Wednesday, February 12th at 7pm. My Backyard has a running time of 31 minutes and, since it is mostly filmed, it captures a world of Bermuda that many never see. In this documentary, biologist Choy Aming explores Bermuda’s underwater biodiversity. Get up close and personal with beautiful reef fish, unusual invertebrates, tiger sharks and humpback whales. St. George’s Cricket Club invite you to hop aboard The Love Train on Friday, February 14th. Starring Bermuda’s own U-Fonics, the show will also feature music by ‘Malcolm Lethal’ Weapon Smith with Bootsie serving as MC. This event is sponsored by Gosling’s, so you can expect door prizes, special drink prices and more. Doors will open at 9pm and the show will start at 10.30pm. World Thinking Day is celebrated on February 22nd each year and is a special day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world. To celebrate, there will be a special Girlguiding Thinking Day Service and Parade in Bermuda on Sunday, February 16th. The Girl Guide Units will parade along Church Street from City Hall to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity at approximately 2.30pm for the service. After the service, at around 4pm, they will parade to the Flag Pole on Front Street for the lowering of the Guide World Flag and the playing of Taps. The Parade will be led by the Somerset Brigade Band and the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band back to City Hall for dismissal. For more information, contact girlguides@northrock.bm.
The February edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be on Sunday, February 16th in the usual location of the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI. Music for Mandela, a documentary about the role that music played in the remarkable life of Nelson Mandela. will be showing at 3pm. This will be followed by More Than Honey, a documentary tackling the vexing issue of why bees worldwide are dying off, at 5.15pm. After the screening, beekeeper Jenny Faries will provide an update on Bermuda’s bee population and take audience questions. More details on the films can be found at www.bermudadocs.com. Workshop promises to show you how to Identify thoughts and feelings that are blocking you in your life and how to change them in order to live a life being happy, joyous and free. Bermuda High School are hosting a craft market featuring some of Bermuda’s most talented local artists on Saturday, February 22nd. The BHS Craft Market and Table Sale will run from 10am until 2pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Vendors will include DanDesign’s art and gifts, Renee Hill’s handmade accessories, Ariel’s gingerbread houses, Aroma’s oil and candles, Rebecca Little’s hand-designed jewellery, Alan Murray’s cedar gifts, plus coffee, a nail bar and more. Remember to hit the ATM beforehand as this is a cash only sale. Extra parking will be available in the car park on Woodbourne Road. Proceeds will help fund the cost of materials needed to help provide a clean water supply for a remote village in Om Goi in the Thai province of Chiang Mai. Learn how to harness the collective wisdom and self-organizing capacity of groups of any size at the Art of Hosting at the Willowbank Conference Centre from Thursday, February 27th to Saturday, March 1st. Attendees will be able to explore and practice several participatory methodologies and use them to explore our main question: what can we do now to create a community that future generations will thank us for? You are invited to grab your best walking shoes and your favourite canine for the Bermuda SPCA’s 17th Annual Paws to the Park Dog Charity Walk on Sunday, March 2nd. This sponsored 1 or 3 mile walk will start at St. Paul’s Church Field, on the corner of Middle Road and Valley Road at 2pm. After the walk, there will be a bake sale and an SPCA table. The registration fee is $35 and the first 75 people will receive a goodie bag. Dogs are not mandatory so non-owners can still participate. All money raised goes directly towards the shelter’s operating budget in supporting the community’s unwanted or neglected animals. Bermuda Toastmasters invite you to their Annual Speech Contest in the church hall of the Bermuda Cathedral, from 5.30pm until 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 11th. Toastmasters is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations. The purpose of the event is to promote interest in public speaking, foster self confidence, provide an opportunity for contestants to enhance their speaking skills, and to recognize the best as an encouragement to everyone. Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art presents the innovative works of award winning artists Jüliz Ritchie and Antoine Hunt in the show bioGraphy photoGraphy from Friday, March 28th. Expanding the field of biographical and photographic expressions into the medium of experimentation and intellectual inquiry, the artists creatively reassess the themes and process of making portraits. Conflated genres, carefully composed ‘mise un scene’ and conceptual process intertwine to generate the images that form the gateway into the complex worlds of their subjects and their narrative. Calling all green-fingered St. Georgians, the St. George’s in Bloom Competition will be returning for 2014. This will run from Sunday, May 11th to Sunday, May 18th and there are prizes to be won in nine different categories. Anyone in St. George’s can enter and everyone is welcome. All of Bermuda are invited to joint the fun on Sunday, May 18th in St. George’s to show off their best floral decorated bicycles and floral decorated hats while they stroll through the town to see the lovely gardens.
