Morning Kids!

I’m sure there are lots of bleary-eyed people reading this this morning – how many of you stayed up far, far too late last night to watch the U.S. election results?  Yup, me too..  Now that that’s all over, here’s what’s going on a little closer to home:

Can’t wait until Saturday for the start of the World Rugby Classic fun? Then you’re in luck as you don’t have to! The Unofficial Rugby Classic Warm Up Party will kick things off on Friday, November 9th at Docksiders. This will run from 8pm until late and will include drinks specials provided by Gosling’s, prize giveaways, two DJs and, of course, the chance to meet the visiting players and fans. Tickets are $10 on the door.

If shamanic yoga, drum journeys, spirit dance and dreamcatcher-making sound like your idea of a perfect Saturday, you won’t wan to miss the Shamanic Yoga & Ecstatic Dance Playshop from Cambridge Beaches.  This will be on Saturday, November 10th and the cost is $245.  For more details, or to reserve your spot, contact Dr. Bianca Komansky on 300-0505 or bkomansky@yahoo.com.

Most of us have next Monday off but do you remember the reason behind it? If you want to show your respect for all the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty since World War I, then the Remembrance Day Parade will be at 10.30am on Sunday, November 11th on Front Street with the 2 minute silence beginning at 11am.

Indigo are bringing Diwali, the Festival of Lights to Bermuda on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 13th and 14th.   Diwali is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year, celebrating the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.  To mark this occasion, Indigo are offering a special buffet menu, Bollywood music, festive lighting, cultural ambiance from 6pm until 10pm on each of the nights.  The cost is $40 per person, 20 for kids aged 5 to 12 and free for under-5s.  For reservations, contact 292-9800 or reservations@indigo.bm.

Think it’s time you updated your look?  Bobbi Brown at A.S. Coopers are being visited by two international makeup artists who will be offering free consultations from Wednesday, November 14th until Saturday, November 17th.  With every purchase of $75 or more, they will be offering a free gift.  Spaces are limited but you can book by calling 295-3961, ext. 403.

The November edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be on Sunday, November 18th with a documentary doubleheader. Italy: Love It Or Leave It will be showing at 3pm, followed by The Imposter at 5.15pm. Both of these films sold out at last month’s Bermuda Docs Festival and more details on them can be found at http://bermudadocs.com/. Tickets are $15 and available at Oceans Gift Shop or by phoning 297-7314.

If you have a child currently attending or considering university then PwC would like to invite you to their Parent Reception on Monday, November 19th.  This will be in the Princess Louise Room at the  Fairmont Hamilton Princess and, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, you will learn about the opportunities available through their HeadStart programme, including hands-on work experience, scholarships, and coaching and mentoring support. Ideal whether you specifically love flowers, or just like being creative in general, Petals are holding a series of workshops during the festive season. Each workshop will have a florist to demonstrate and guide you through the process of creating a design for your own home or to give as a gift, all while teaching you tips and tricks for working with flowers.  The first workshop, Create Your own Floral Thanksgiving Table Centerpiece will be on Monday, November 19th from 6pm to 8pm at a cost of $85 per person.  The next, Design Your Own Advent Wreath, will be on Saturday, December 1st from 1pm to 3pm at a cost of $85 per person. This will run at the Earl Cameron Theatre (formerly City Hall Theatre) from Thursday, December 6th until Saturday, December 15th at 7.30pm (no evening performance on December 9th) with matinees at 3pm on December 8th, 9th and 15th.  On opening night, you can come and meet the stars of the show and have your picture taken with them afterwards.  Tickets are $35 and can be purchased online from November 10th at www.bmds.bm.

January can be a bit of a comedown after all the excitement of the holiday season so it’s always nice to see something come along to brighten it up.  One of my favourite events of the year, Just for Laughs Bermuda, will be at the Fairmont Southampton Mid-Ocean Ampitheatre from Thursday, January 10th until Saturday, January 12th. Alonzo Bodden is coming back to host, and three international comics, Danny Bhoy (Scotland), Mark Forward (Canada) and Orny Adams (USA) along with local talent Jonathan Young will be performing. Thursday night will have cabaret-style seating at round tables of 4, 6 or 10 and will cost $87 per person. The show will begin at 8pm and drinks and finger food will be available for sale at your table. Friday and Saturday have theatre-style seating and tickets are $77 or $87 for reserved seating. The Friday show starts at 8.30pm and on Saturday, there are two shows at 7pm and 10pm. All shows run for about 2 hours, including 15 minute intermission. In addition to JFL, Alonzo Bodden and Danny Bhoy will be sharing the stage in Double Threat at City Hall Theatre on Wednesday, January 9th at 8pm and tickets are $45. Tickets are on sale now at www.bdatix.bm. The Waterlot Inn and Newport GastroPub will be offering pre-show menus, and there will be a special room rate of $149 at the Fairmont Southampton. For more details, please see www.comedyevent.bm.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will be holding its second annual Get Steeped with Fairmont programme and the 2012 version has been expanded from a one-day celebration to a full month of festivi‘teas’.  Throughout the month of November, The Fairmont Hamilton Princess will be hosting The British Empire Classic Tea in addition to their normal afternoon tea menu. This special menu will feature such treats as finger sandwiches (Scottish smoked salmon, hens egg salad and herb cream cheese with English cucumber), pastries (including pumpkin and chocolate chip scones and Victoria sponge cupcakes) and other sweets (including Kirsch mousse with brandied cherries and pistachio almond macaroons), all paired with  Eclipse tea, a organic luxury black tea which is the first in a new series of commemorative Fairmont select tea blends. The price for this special afternoon tea is $34 per person plus gratuities, with a special menu for children also available.  To compliment this, the mixologists at Heritage Court will be offering Tipsy Tea Cocktails featuring tea- infused cocktails at a cost of $12 plus grats.  Over at the Fairmont Southampton, the Jasmine Lounge will also offer a special afternoon tea menu, featuring a choice of Fairmont loose leaf tea, chocolate-covered strawberries, various French pastries, fresh scones and sandwiches, such as Maine lobster sliders and Atlantic smoked salmon on pumpernickel. The price is $38 per person plus gratuities. Children aged 12 and under can enjoy the Little Prince and Princess Tea with a choice of hot chocolate or Fairmont tea, fresh fruit cup, Victorian scone and jam, mini sandwiches and Chef Esther mini cupcakes and fruit tartlets for $23 per child plus gratuities.  For more information or to make reservations, call The Fairmont Hamilton Princess on 298-5779 or The Fairmont Southampton on 238-8000.

The lead-up to the festive season can be a little stressful sometimes.  Luckily, Cambridge Beaches are currently offering 25% off some of their 50 minute treatments, including massages, reflexology and facials.  This offer is available from Monday to Thursday until the end of November.  For more information or reservations, contact 234-3636 or oceanspa@cambeach.bm.

Anyone looking for a unique dining experience  might want to consider the Chef’s Table at Beau Rivage. This gives you the opportunity to dine in the kitchen, watching Master Chef Jean-Claude Garzia at work while he prepares a surprise 5, 7 or 9-course dinner based on fresh seasonal produce. This is available Monday to Saturday, open to parties of 8 to 14 and reservations are required. The cost per person (excluding grats) is $105 for 5 courses, $165 for 7 courses and $250 per person for 9 courses. For reservations, contact 232-8686 or info@beaurivagebda.com.

Mother’s Treats Gourmet Cupcakes are now mobile and coming to a location near you!  Like them on Facebook to find out where they are each day and the first in line will get a free cupcake.  If it’s raining, they’ll show you a little extra love by taking a dollar off each cupcake purchase.  There will be different flavours each day and the special Egg Nog cupcake of the season will be available until the end of December.  For more information, contact 536-5035 or info@motherstreats.com.
