Happy Friday Troops!
Just a quickie before the weekend:
An old favourite has returned for the summer as the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Happy Hour is back tonight, Friday, April 5th. As usual, this will run from 5pm until 9pm on the patio, overlooking the harbour with drink specials, a BBQ, music and giveaways.
First up, a there are four new exhibits opening tonight, Friday, April 5th at Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. In the Onions Gallery, there will be an exhibition of work produced by the students of Bermuda College Art Courses. The Edinburgh Gallery is exhibiting a BSoA Showcase – Works in Progress, a sample of work produced during the many classes, workshops and drawing sessions held in the gallery. Studio A will have woodwork and art on show, created by the members of De Boys Day Out Club, under the instruction of Milton Hill, while Studio B is exhibiting Fayelle Wharton Bush – The Nature of Design, a study of the beautiful botanical world of Bermuda in print. The official opening reception will be from 5pm until 7pm with the usual wine, beer and soda with cheese and crackers provided. All exhibits will run until April 24th.
The April edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be on Sunday, April 7th with the documentary The Loving Story, showing at 3pm, followed by The Central Park Five at 5.15pm. More details on the films can be found at www.BermudaDocs.com. Tickets are $15 and available at Oceans Gift Shop or by phoning 294-0204.
As part of their Artist in the Garden Series, Masterworks are hosting a special exhibit opening reception on Friday, April 12th from 5.30pm until 7pm. A decade after their first two-man show, Bermudian artists, Jonah Jones and Chris Marson will showcase their oil paintings. Ten years On will be the sixth show they have held together since 2003 and will run until May 1st. Full details can be found on www.bermudamasterworks.com.
The Vegetarian Society will be hosting a pre-Earth Day Nature Walk on Sunday, April 21st. From 2pm until 4pm, you can enjoy the outdoors while learning about Bermuda’s medicinal plants and more from Sonia Bremar. The walk will start at Palmetto Park (opposite the PTB headquarters) and parking is also available there. This event is free and all are welcome.
Another Bermuda institution will soon be back for the summer season with the return of Harbour Nights on Wednesday, May 1st. This will be in the usual time-slot from 7pm until 10pm and will continue up until August 28th. Most of you are very familiar with it but for any newbies or tourists reading this, every Wednesday of the summer months, Front Street is closed to traffic and instead is filled with vendor stalls with various arts and crafts, al fresco dining, late night shopping until 9pm and live music and entertainment. This year’s offering has been rejuvenated and expanded and will now be in a loop from the Flag Pole along Front Street, up Queen Street, to Reid Street, along to Burnaby Hill and then back down to the Flag Pole. There will also be more of an emphasis on keeping it local, with Bermuda-made items for sale and a weekly showcase of the Tradition Bearers who keep Bermuda heritage alive. There will also be more intimate busker-style entertainment along the route instead of the main stage at the Flag Pole. The aim is to create a traditional authentic cultural experience that both tourists and locals can enjoy.
Destination Dockyard is returning on Monday nights between May 6th and September 2nd! This street festival will be staged on the North Lawn and around the Clocktower Mall, and will focus on our diverse local talent, combined with the element of competition, exciting prizes, family and youth engagement and unique shopping opportunities. From 7pm until 10pm, there will be a variety of live entertainment with the opportunity to vote for your favourite band, dance troupe, Gombey troupe, choir, songwriter, Majorette, etc. Local bar operators and food vendors will be on-hand to keep you well fed and watered and other vendors will have Bermudian items for sale. The event designed to fit in with the ferry schedule timing for a return journey to Hamilton. For more information, contact Joanna Cranfield on jcranfield@wedco.bm.
