Dr  Robinson-Cyril Packwood Memorial Lecture

Interested in learning how to leave a precious gift for future generations? The next of the Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series will be 10 Ways To Preserve Your Family History on Thursday, August 15th at 6.30pm at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.  This is the 8th Annual Dr. Kenneth E. New Orleans Food and Wine

Bourbon Street comes to Bermy as Ten Cafe & Bar invite you to join them for a special New Orleans Food and Wine Pairing Evening on  Thursday, August 15th.  From 7pm, you can expect a night of jazz and spice, including a cocktail upon arrival followed by a 5 course dinner paired with wine.  The cost is $75 per person, plus grats.  To book your spot, contact 295-0857 or ten@yellowfin.bm.

 

 

Willy Torres Intimate Concert in RumbaR

Those if you in attendance at Mambo Nights on Saturday will have enjoyed a fantastic live performance from 3-time Latin Grammy Award Winner, Willy Torres.  Great news for anyone who missed it, or wants an encore, as Rumba°R have arranged for an intimate concert on Saturday, August 17th from 6.30pm until 11pm.  For diners interested in experiencing the performance, tables can be reserved in both the courtyard and the upper balcony. Venetian

The ultimate waterfront dining view will be available on Saturday, August 17th as the Venetian yacht is hosting a Dinner Cruise. The evening will include a gourmet dinner with wine, a welcome glass of prosecco and a dessert buffet at a cost of $195 per person.  There are three tables of eight available and you can book a maximum of one table or just book two individuals seats at a table to mix and mingle.   The boat will depart Albuoy’s Point at 6.30pm, returning at 10.30pm.   For more details, or to reserve, contact info@venetian.bm or 704-3000.

 

 

Bermuda Docs August Weekend-Film-Series

The August edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be at BUEI on Sunday, August 18th with the documentary Rising from Ashes, showing at 3pm followed by drama, The Look of Love, starring Steve Coogan, at 5.15pm. More details on the films can be found at www.BermudaDocs.com. Summer Singing Experience

The CaBrailsong School of Vocal Arts are calling on all young people aged between 5 and 21 to participate in the the Summer Singing Experience, running from Monday, August 15th until Sunday, August 25th.  Choral Workshops will be held nightly from Monday to Friday between 6pm and 8.30pm at the Allen Temple AME Church and there will also be a rehearsal at 2pm on Saturday, August 24th.  The Finale Concert will be at 6pm on Sunday, August 25th at the Willowbank Conference Centre. Ocean-Vet-Bermuda

Due to popular demand, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) are once again hosting Ocean Vet Bermuda, the 4th lecture in the Citizen Science Lecture Series on Tuesday, August 20th.  Ocean Vet Bermuda is the title for a proposed 12 show series scheduled to be filmed in Bermuda in 2014.  Bermuda’s own Dr. Neil Burnie will share entertaining stories of his own marine exploits and will also offer a preview of some of the never-before-seen footage, featuring episodes on groupers, marlin, humpback whales, tiger sharks, the Sargasso Sea and the lionfish invasion.  Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The lecture itself will start at 7pm and afterwards, Harbourfront are offering a special menu at a cost of $39.75 plus grats.  Advanced tickets are required for the special menu.  Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-members  and available from the Oceans Gift Shop at BUEI or from 294-0204.

Pecha Kucha Bermuda

Another great opportunity to listen to entertaining presentations on a variety of topics, without worrying that any of the speakers will waffle on for too long, as the 4th edition of PechaKucha Night Bermuda will be on Thursday, August 22nd.  PechaKucha Nights were started in Japan and have a 20×20 presentation format where each speaker shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images.  Since there is no pausing or going back, speakers have no choice but to keep to their allotted time.  This will take place at at Bermuda Society of Arts in City Hall and speakers include Gregory Nelmes (interior designer), Sara Corday (genealogist), Jim Goossens (urban planner), Jeanne Wohlmuth (wellness practitioner), MaryLeigh Burnett (mural/art), Dana Cooper (fashion designer), Earl Jones (physicist), Stratton Hatfield (designer), Kristin White (Transition Bermuda) and Chris Burville (photographer). Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 6.30pm. Admission is free, although donations are welcome. For more information, see their Facebook Page here.

Improv Cup Match

If you like your comedy to be a little more off-the-cuff than the norm, get yourself along to the Improvised Comedy Cup Match 2013 on Thursday, August 22nd and Friday, August 23rd. From 8pm at Daylesford Theatre, two teams, St Gorgeous and Stunnerset, will compete to see who can come up with the best and funniest scenes, making it up as they go along based on audience suggestions (like in the show Whose Line is it Anyway?).  You are invited to wear your Cup Match team colours and bring noisemakers.  Since they are completely improvised, you can go both nights and see two completely different shows.  Tickets are $20 and available online at www.express.bm. All proceeds will go to charity – 50% to the BMDS Charitable Trust and 50% to the Family Centre.

 

 

The Sound Concert

Aisha NuSound will be showcasing her talent during her debut concert performance at The Sound, an inspirational concert event on Saturday, August 31st.  Doors open at 7pm and from 7.30pm you can expect live instrumental music, original compositions, vocals and spoken word, featuring artists such as Alex Bassett, Chandra Maybury, England’s Mischa Laurén and many more.  Admission is $25 for general admission, $20 per person for groups of 10, $50 for Patrons, $75 for Gold Patrons and $10 for children under 12.  Tickets are available online at www.pTix.bm or from the Heritage Bookstore (at Heritage Worship Centre, next to Liberty Theatre).  For more information, contact aishanusound@gmail.com or 538-2686.  Part proceeds will go to Big Brothers & Big Sisters Bermuda.

BNG Partner Re

Suppositions, the next in the PartnerRe Art Lecture Series at Bermuda National Gallery will be on Friday, September 13th.  The guest speaker will be New York-based artist, Sanford Biggers who will discuss his work from the past two years. Biggers has come to international prominence in the last decade with a body of work that investigates the themes of identity, race, African American history, and spirituality, often through the blending of installation and performance. His latest work continues the exploration of these themes through another stylistic departure, painting on historical quilts.  The reception will be from 5.30pm, followed by the lecture itself at 6pm. The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members.  For further details, or to RSVP, contact  director@bng.bm or on 295-9428.
