Morning Troops!

Hope you’re making the most of the last few days of August.  We might complain about the humidity now but I’m sure we’ll miss it when it starts getting a little chilly again.  We have lots of time before we have to think about winter though – here’s what’s coming up in Bermuda:

Great Gatsby

A great opportunity to watch some recent blockbusters under the stars as the Moonlight Movie Series presents the Department of Park’s Movies in the Park on Friday, August 30th and Saturday, August 31st at the Botanical Gardens.  From 6pm on both evenings, there will be DJ music, competitions, giveaways, food vendors and a KiddieLand.  On the Friday, the first movie, Epic (rated PG), will start at 8.30pm, after the sun goes down, followed by the late feature, Oblivion at 10.30pm.  On the Saturday, the family feature at 8.30pm is Frankenweenie (rated PG), followed by The Great Gatsby (PG-13) at 10.30pm.    There will be recycling on site and free water for everyone with re-useable water containers.  Admission is free and all are welcome.  For more details, contact info@moonlightmovieseries.com.

Discovery Wines Pacific Northwest

Back to school time isn’t just for the kids as Discovery Wines are also getting geared up for the fall session of their wine classes.  The first on Saturday, August 31st will be a two hour class on wines of the Pacific North West.  From Oregon Pinot Noir to Washington State Syrah, they promise that you will find out everything you ever wanted to know about wines from the upper-left hand corner of the United States, after an hour-long discussion and presentation, you will have plenty of time to get to sample some of the best of them.  The class will begin at 10.30am in their newly renovated warehouse on Bakery Lane in Pembroke (off-Serpentine Road, they can send directions if necessary).  The cost is $40 and you can reserve your spot by contacting 296-9463.

Summer Sundays September

Summer Sundays in the Park is back on Sunday, September 1st, and promises a focus on old school and new school reggae music with the theme Reggae Vibes.  This event will feature lots of family-friendly entertainment in Victoria Park from 3pm until 8pm, featuring mistress of ceremonies Power Girl with live music from Missian, Conscious Bermuda, Soul Surreal, Dia, and many more.  As usual, there will be a kids’ area with fun castles, face-painting, cotton candy and popcorn. If you don’t want to take your own picnic with you, there will be food vendors available.  Admission is free.

UberVida Summer Soca Cruise

You are invited to give summer a proper send-off as D’General presents the last of the Summer Soca Cruise Series aboard the UberVida on Sunday, September 1st.  All of the previous cruises have sold out and this one is, not only the grand finale of the series, but also D’General’s Annual Birthday Cruise.  The cruise departs #1 Car Park at 6pm, returning at 9pm with music by guest DJs DeForest Evans, New Era and Rusty G. This event is sponsored by Bacardi, so you can expect Bacardi and Grey Goose drinks to be on special.  Tickets are $20 and must be bought in advance from Kit ‘n’ Caboodle, since there will not be any tickets sold at the boat.  For more information, contact D’General at 300-1049 or info@d-general.com.

UberVida Fusion

Right after the Summer Soca Cruise, you can get right on the boat again as UberVida and Bermuda Triangle Fiestas present Fusion on Sunday, September 1st, departing from the dock at #Car Park on Front Street.  From 10pm until 2am, you can expect a mix of house, EDM, DubStep, Drum & Bass, ragga, reggae, soca, mashups and high energy dance music,  courtesy of Walshy Fire (official DJ from electronic dancehall DJ project Major Lazer), Y.G.S. (Best of Bermuda 2013 winner of Best Club/Party DJs), DJ Siid James (VIBE 103/ IBIZA), and an appearance from a special guest artist.  Tickets are $50 and available from www.pTix.bm.

UberVida Recovery

If your plans for the Labour Day holiday mainly involve getting over the previous night’s festivities, then you have the opportunity to do it in style at UberVida Recovery on Monday, September 2nd.  The boat departs #1 Car Park at 3pm, returning at 7pm and, since it is a BYOB cruise, you can bring the hair of whatever dog happened to bite you.  Tickets are $40 and available from www.pTix.bm.
