Happy Friday Kids!

Hope you’re all gearing up for a great weekend!  Here is a quick round-up of the latest Bermuda events:

Karaoke Night

You are invited to bring a chair and exercise your vocal chords as the Corporation of St. George’s Activities Committee presents Family Karaoke Night on Saturday, October 5th.  From 8pm until 11pm in King’s Square, Ragin’ Bajan will be on hand to help the whole family channel their inner rock star.  Available age groups are 12 and under, 13 to 19, and 20 and over.  Admission is free and refreshments will be on sale.  In case of inclement weather, the venue will move to Penno’s Wharf.

Tourism Business Matters

Whether  you have a tourist business that you would like to grow, want information on tourism opportunities in St. George’s or would just like information on how to spot the latest tourism idea, the Tourism Business Matters Seminar on Tuesday, October 8th at Penno’s Wharf in St. George’s could be for you.  Registration and refreshments will start at 5.30pm with the event itself running from 6pm until 8pm.  Guest speakers for the evening are Colin Campbell (OBMI Consultant for the National Tourism Plan, Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone (owner of The Bermuda Perfumery and Lili Bermuda), Philip Seaman (owner of a St. George’s vacation rental) and Mark Soares (St. George’s Harbour Marina) who will discuss such topics as identifying new business opportunities, financing your tourism/hospitality business, avoiding the pitfalls of a tourist-related business, understanding the National Tourism Plan, and more.  The cost is $20 for BEDC Members or $20 for all others.  To register, contact info@bedc.bm or 292-5570.

International Imports

International Imports (The Chef’s Shop) on Par-la-ville is hosting two separate cooking classes in October with Chef Jennie Forster.  The first is on Tuesday, October 8th with the theme of Goodies for Giving.  This will include perfect treats for Christmas gift giving, such as Parmesan Shortbread with Crushed Pepper, gougeres with pancetta and blue cheese, marshmallows, florentines and French macaroons.  The class on Tuesday, October 15th is Save the Best for First and will include filled spinach roulade, twice-baked cheese soufflé, foie gras with figs, cucumber and goats cheese cannelloni with beetroot relish and meringue roulade.  The wines will be sponsored by Burrows Lightbourn, who will also be offering special-order pricing on wines sampled during the evening.  All proceeds will benefit Masterworks Museum and their educational programs.  Jennie is a great friend of Tom Butterfield (the Founder and Creative Director of Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art) and has an extensive background in hospitality.  Tickets are $95 per night and can be purchased from International Imports on 292-1661.

Boarding School Fair

Is your child reaching their potential in school?  Do they find learning difficult? Do they excel in one subject but not in others?  Next week, 23 schools that specialize in helping students succeed in school will be at the International Boarding Schools Fair on Wednesday, October 9th and Thursday, October 10th at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.  The Fair will feature schools that offer additional academic support, including schools that offer programmes for dyslexia/reading, dyscalculia/math, dyspraxia/moto skill development, Aspergers Syndrome, and learning delays, and schools that offer learning support, including tutoring in specific subjects, smaller classes with more individual attention and programmes to help organisation and focus.  From 4.30pm until 7.30 pm, you can meet with representatives and learn about what some of these institutions have to offer.  For more information, contact Tory Dodge on 777-8578 or tory@schoolstoknow.com.  No reservations are required.

Beating of the Retreat

At the request of the Bermuda Police Service, the Commanding Officer has agreed that the Band and Corps of Drums of the Bermuda Regiment, along with the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band, will perform a  Beating of the Retreat  Ceremony on Wednesday, October 9th at 8pm on Front Street in the City of Hamilton.  The Beating of the Retreat Ceremony is a musical display which stems back to the 17th century when the soldiers stationed on the island were called back to the garrisons at nightfall.  This special Ceremony will take place during Police Week to highlight the long standing relationship the Bermuda Regiment and the Bermuda Police Service have shared.

Big Chill

There’s a brand new addition to the Big Chill family! As well as Fridays at Seabreeze Lounge, you can now celebrate Thursdays with an Ibiza-style chillout vibe at Bone Fish Bar & Grill from 7pm until late throughout October.  As usual, Felix Tod and Tony Brannon will be playing both live music and DJ’d chillout for your listening pleasure.  For reservations, call 234-5151.

Ground Control

Ground Control is a new exhibition of prized art  work from the permanent collection at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda.  Inspired by David Bowie’s lyrics, “Ground Control to Major Tom”, the title suggests control of a medium, which is interpreting the landscape or “ground”. The landscape artist is a magician who can create a whole world on a flat canvas and Bermuda lent itself to this pursuit.  The exhibit will open in the Rick Faries Gallery on October 11th from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and will run until November 20th.

PGA Grand Slam of Golf

The 31st PGA Grand Slam of Golf this year will take place at the Port Royal Golf Course from Monday, October 14th until Wednesday, October 16th.  This is a season-ending showcase of the Major Champions from 2013 where the players vie for the title “Champion of Champions” and a 1.35 million dollar purse.  Participants this year will include the Masters Champion Adam Scott, U.S. Open Champion Justin Rose, PGA Champion Jason Dufner and defending champion Padraig Harrington, who replaces Phil Mickelson.   General admission tickets cost $20 per day, or $50 for all three days, and all ticket types are buy one, get one free for the same day.  Each ticketed adult will be allowed four junior admissions (aged 17 and under) to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at no additional charge.  Various hospitality packages are also available.  For more details, or to purchase tickets online, see their website at www.pga.com/grandslam.

Yart Sale

They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  Masterworks invite you to come and see if this is true for you at their Yart Sale on Saturday, October 26th.  This fundraising opportunity will support the Museum and its educational programmes with items on sale including art, collectibles, clothes, baby items, shoes, bags, books, CDs, frames, toys, housewares and more.  You are asked to please bring your brown bags and tote bags to the sale.  For more information, or to volunteer, contact 299-4000.

Olde Towne Market

The Olde Towne Market, St. George’s European-style street market on Water Street will return for a new season on Sunday, November 3rd.  This will run from 2pm until 6pm, every Sunday until December 22nd.  Items for sale will include fresh local produce, fish, arts and crafts, a pedlar’s market and more.  For vendor registration, or additional information, contact 296-6185 or oldtownemarket@yahoo.com.

Art Walk in the East

The St. George’s Events Committee invite you to their next Art Walk in the East, a unique bohemian-style event on Saturday, November 3rd from 4pm until 9pm.  The Art Walk in the East is a self-guided walking tour located throughout the Old Towne of St. George’s.  The purpose of the Art Walk is to promote art in all its forms and will range from pottery making and cedar carvings, to pastels, oil paintings, to weaving, singing, dancing, instrumentals, and spoken word artists.  There will be special guest performances by Sybil Barrington, Joy T. Barnum, Vejay Steele, Alan Smith and more.  This is a free event to attend and is also free for artists to display and sell their wares.

Sunshine League Fundraiser

Bermuda’s oldest charity and Bermuda’s oldest pub have joined forces for a month of grub, grog and giving.  For the month of October, with every purchase at The Swizzle Inns, you will have an opportunity to donate $1 or more to the Sunshine League.  You can choose the amount to add to your bill and 100% of your donation will go directly to The Sunshine League.  The funds will support all of their vital programmes, the newest of which is the development of a Transitional Living Centre for our island’s young men.  For more information, ask your server at either Swizzle Inn location or contact the Sunshine League on 292-4360.
