Morning Kids!

 

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Event promoters, just to give you plenty of prior notice, please make sure you submit details of your events well in advance of the Christmas and New Year break.  Since they fall on my usual publishing days of Wednesday this year, it doesn’t make sense to get a post out those two weeks.  This means that the last post of 2013 will be published next week and the first post of the New Year will be on Wednesday, January 8th.

Don’t panic if you can’t get everything finalised in time as you can still submit your event directly to the calendar as usual.  I will still be reviewing and approving submissions during this period so they will still appear on the calendar – they just won’t appear on the Blog section.

Anyway, there are lots of Bermuda events to enjoy this festive season, so here’s the latest roundup:

 

BMDS

To coincide with this year’s Sleeping Beauty pantomime, Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society (BMDS) is also hosting Fairytale Land in the parking lot at Daylesford Theatre from Thursday, December 5th until Saturday, December 14th.  You are invited to bring your family and join the fun from 6pm on weekday evenings and 1pm on weekends.  There is no cover charge and you will have the opportunity to purchase food and games, photos with Santa and more.  For more information, contact diva@bmds.bm.

Fr. Attilio Morelli, Pastor of St. Michael’s Church is hosting a Bible Class on the Last Four Things on Wednesday, December 11th.  Starting at 7.30pm, this class on the end of our life includes Death, Judgement, Hell and Paradise, offering a fresh biblical look. This is open to all. For more information, contact stmichaels@logic.bm.

 

 

 

Chewstick Griot Yesha

Talented poet Yesha Townsend will be featured in the next Chewstick Foundation Griot Session on Thursday, December 12th at the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Café. Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm with opening act Jorge Suarez, showcasing his unique mix of folk and hip hop inspired songs. All performances will be streamed live at www.chewstick.org. Entry is $10, payable at the door. For more information call 292-2439 (CHEW) or email info@chewstick.org.

 

 

 

Santa's Christmas Bash

Santa Claus is coming to Queen Street on Friday, December 13th and you are all invited to join the fun at his Christmas Bash at Daisy and Mac, and Daisy’s.  Keep an eye out from 5pm, as Santa will be making his rounds through the City of Hamilton on a fire truck.  Children and adults on the Nice list who see Santa and his elves might receive candy canes as well as good cheer!  Santa will then finish up in Daisy’s, on the floor above Daisy and Mac in the Bermudiana Arcade. Their little elves will be very busy taking free photos of your child with Santa, handing out gifts and Christmas candy.  Both Daisy and Mac and Daisy’s also promise amazing in-store savings that night.  For more details, contact marketing@queenmgt.com.

 

 

Bermuda Society of Arts1

There are six new exhibits opening on Friday, December 13th at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. The Onions Gallery will be showing the Members Winter Show, a collection of work from their many talented and varied members.  The Edinburgh Gallery will be exhibiting Mike Davis’ Kite Aerial Photography, allowing you to see Bermuda from a whole new angle.  Studio A will showcase Surf and Turf by Nahed Eid, a combination of handmade ornaments, jewelry, mixed media art work and collages, while Andreas Detzer will be exhibiting Under Water Rainbows, a collection of bright and colourful images printed on metal taken here in Bermuda, in Studio B.  In Studio C, Rebecca Little will display her jewellery, inspired by bright Bermudian colours and architecture, while in Studio D, Deondre Cumberbatch will bring to life the words of poet Langston Hughes through colour and emotion in Fade to Black: A Dream Deferred.  Opening night will be BSoA on Friday, December 13th from 5pm until 7pm with the usual wine, beer and soda with cheese and crackers provided.  The shows will run until Friday, January 3rd.  Admission is free and all are welcome.  For more information, contact 292-3824 or bsoa@ibl.bm.

 

Bermemes Crissmas Party

The Bermemes crew are hosting a little Christmas shindig at the Chewstick Lounge to show appreciation to everybody who has supported these local legends over the past year.  Ah Bermemes Crissmis will kick off at 8pm with the highlight sure to be a live performance of their new Crissmis song as well as a rendition of last year’s hilarious 12 Days ov Crissmis.  They promise that Bakatahn Santa will be there, along with Dem Biez, Bad Current, and recent Hollywood Music in Media Award winner Kidd Clazzic performing live, with special DJs taking over later in the evening until the party ends at 3am.  If all of that isn’t enough of an incentive, Dunkley’s will be sponsoring eggnog at the party!  Entry is $10, adults only, and while there is no official dress code, there will be prizes for the ugliest Christmas sweater, karaoke and “some other dopeyness that’ll probably happen”.  For more information, visit their event page on Facebook. Check you bies there!

Hogfish

Guns ‘n’ Roses, Tom Petty, AC/DC, Tragically Hip, Pearl Jam, KISS…if this sounds like your type of music then Hogfish are likely to be performing many of your favourites at Hog Penny on Friday, December 13th. Hogfish will feature Will Black on vocals, Gary Foster Skelton on bass and Pete Brodsky on drums from 10.30pm until 1am. As usual, there will be no cover charge.

 

 

 

Christmas Tree Festival

The 3rd Annual Christmas Tree Festival will take place at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Smith’s on Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th.  Having purchased 6-7 foot trees from the Trees 4-Sale Group, they have invited local organisations to decorate a tree in the theme of their choice.  From 10am until 4pmon the Saturday , the church will be open to the public and they invite you to come and view the decorated trees.  There will also be a bake sale, a soup and roll lunch and musical entertainment from noon until 2pm.  On the Sunday, there will also be an open house until 4pm and the festivities will conclude with a Celebration of Christmas Service at 6.30pm with the various groups who will have decorated the trees participating.  The participating groups are Bermuda Cancer and Health Association, Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute, Whitney Institute, Bermuda Sloop Foundation, 19th Bermuda Boy Scouts, Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association, St. Mark’s Church and Guild, St. Mark’s Sunday School, St. Mark’s Choir, Ecumenical Tea Group, Friends of Africa Group, Bright Beginnings Nursery School and Mirrors Programme.  Admission is free.  For more information, contact 747-8893.

 

Bermuda Public Services Union

The Bermuda Public Services Union (BPSU) invite you to drop your kids off at their BPSU’s Future Leaders Holiday Club on Saturday, December 14th while you get your Christmas shopping done.  This Club is not limited to Union members and children will enjoy movies, games and activities from 1pm until 4pm.  The cost is $15 and snacks and lunch will be provided for an additional $5. For more information, contact slambe@bpsu.bm.

 

 

Santa Claus is Coming to Towne

If last week’s Christmas Walkabout wasn’t enough eastern festivity for you, then great news as the Corporation of St. George’s presents Santa Claus is Coming to Town on Saturday, December 14th in King’s Square, St. George’s.  Santa arrives at 8pm but there will be entertainment from 6pm, including majorettes, toy stalls, dancers, food vendors and more.

 

 

Zumba for a Cause Fundraiser

Zumbaphiles, here’s an opportunity to enjoy a Zumba class while helping a worthy cause at the same time.  The Association of Filipinos in Bermuda presents Zumba for a Cause on Sunday, December 15th at the Berkeley Institute Gym.  From 2pm until 4pm, you are invited to bring your own face towel and enjoy this fun workout with Triple W Zumba class instructor, Wanda Maxwell, Welma Steede and Wilma Somner.  The cost is $20 for adults, $10 for children and you can pay for your ticket at the door or send your donations to this event at Berkeley Gym. Proceeds will go to the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines. For more details, contact Marrah Butler on 333-5199.

Langhorne Slim

A night of acoustic music is in store at Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) on  Friday, December 27th.  From 8pm, An Evening with Langhorne Slim and Friends will be a unique opportunity to see a live performance by this American up-and-coming singer-songwriter, along with local talents, Daniel Frith and Gavin Djata Smith.  Tickets are $45 in advance, $50 at the door.  For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact BSoA at 292-3824 or bsoa@ibl.bm, or buy online at www.BDAtix.bm.

 

Elite Rugby Camp

Young rugby fans, are you looking for something to do over the Christmas break?  BRFU Elite Rugby Camp for girls and boys, will take place at National Sports Centre on Saturday, December 28th and Sunday, December 29th.  Rugby Canada and USA Rugby are supplying some of their top ex-professional players to coach young Bermudians, including under-12s, under-14s, under-16s, under 19s and University.  Over the two days, coaches will be working on developing core skills of players such as catching, passing, tackling and attacking space. Hogmanay Ball

By popular demand, the Caledonian Society of Bermuda’s famous Hogmanay Ball will return for the first time since 2010 and will be held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Tuesday, December 31st.  The event kicks off with a cocktail reception (cash bar) from 7.30pm with a rendition of Auld Lang Syne at 8pm (midnight in Scotland).  Attendees will then be seated for 9pm for a delicious Scottish-themed dinner with wine included.  You can also expect party favours, a raffle, champagne at midnight and DJ King Arthur keeping you on the dancefloor until 3am.  Dress code is black tie and tickets are $155 each, $90 for under-18s, including grats. Champagne New Year
