The last holiday weekend before Cup Match is almost upon us!  You’ll find plenty of things to do in Bermuda in this post; however, please don’t forget that you can also check what events have been featured in previous posts listed in the Quick Recap section at the bottom of every weekly post.

 

0610 Diabetes Summit

How much sugar is in your day? A teaspoon in your coffee? Maybe a little in your dessert? The truth is added sugar adds up. Find out how much is too much at the Bermuda Diabetes Association’s Public Diabetes Seminar on Wednesday, June 10th.

From 5.30pm in the Harbour Ballroom at the Hamilton Princess, you can listen to a panel of internationally-acclaimed diabetes experts discuss what we can do in Bermuda to stem the tide of this health epidemic.

Speakers will be notable global leaders in the fight against diabetes, including Dr. Petra Wilson, CEO of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF); Dr. Belma Mandala, leading doctor and researcher on gestational diabetes and chairman of the WINGS project (improving gestational diabetes outcomes in Africa and India); and Ms. Anne-Marie Felton, Past Vice-President, IDF, and the co-Founder and current President of the Federation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND).

0610 Will Black at Hog Penny

Share your music on a proper stage in front of a crowd of appreciative fans at Open Mic Night hosted by Will Black on Wednesdays. From 10pm until close, you are invited to join your host Will Black at Hog Penny Pub. You are asked to arrive before 10pm to get your name on the performer list for the evening, and you can either bring your own instrument with you or borrow one of Will’s guitars to perform on, as he has a 6 string and 12 string available for use. Would you like Will to accompany you live on guitar? Absolutely no problem! Just contact Will Black directly at wb@willblack.com in advance to work out your song arrangement for your performance.

Come on down, grab a pint and enjoy yourselves by celebrating UK Pub Night on Thursdays at Hog Penny. From 10pm until close, Will Black perform will perform your favorite British hits from Oasis, Coldplay, Adele, Pulp, Radiohead, The Verve and Snow Patrol, plus sing-a-long with the classics from the 60s British Invasion through New Wave 80s, including the Rolling Stones, Def Leppard, Queen, Eric Clapton, Billy Idol, The Beatles, The Jam, and more.

Join Will Black, Jason Bracewell and Chris Finsness for Music Room Jam on Friday nights at Hog Penny. From 10pm until close, you can enjoy an evening of acoustic sing-a-longs and your song requests.

Live Bands and MTV Video Night hosted by Will Black will be on Saturday nights at Hog Penny.  From 10pm until close, you can enjoy various bands and live entertainment.

A.F. Smith will be hosting a furniture launch at their GestureThink Show at Bermuda National Gallery on Thursday, June 11th.

From 4.30pm until 6.30pm, they will be showcasing their new chair lines by Steelcase. Merging innovation, ergonomics and entertainment to showcase these line, they guarantee that it will be an event that you won’t want to miss.

0611 Gestational Diabetes

If you are a woman affected by gestational diabetes, building a healthy life for your family starts with you. The Bermuda Diabetes Association invites you to hear from an expert panel of international leaders in gestational diabetes management at their Gestational Diabetes Event on Thursday, June 11th.

From 6.30pm at BUEI, this will be an informative presentation and discussion on how you can minimize your family’s diabetes risk and is suitable for anyone wanting to learn how to minimize diabetes risks and complications in a family environment.

This event is free.

There are four new exhibits opening on Friday, June 12th at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall.

The Onions Gallery will feature KBB Extended Life Trash Art Show in partnership with ACE.

The Edinburgh Gallery will be showcasing beautiful, highly-detailed decorative Islamic art at Moth-Flame by Melanie Francis.

Jewels & Art from the Sea by Kelly Diel is on display at Studio A.

Studio B will showcase TRIAD by Peter Carpenter.

The opening receptions will be from 5pm until 7pm on Friday, June 12th.

Regular opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays. The exhibits will run until Tuesday, July 7th.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

0612 Mix Happy Hour at Coco Reef

Looking for a change from the Hamilton Happy Hour Scene? Every Friday throughout the summer, you are invited to step out of the city and come to The Mix Happy Hour at Coco Reef from June 12th.

From 5.30pm until 8.30pm, you can overlook the beautiful South Shore while enjoying $7 drink prices on wine, beer and liquor with a special cocktail every week.

0612 Noble and Greenough Concert

Hear performances of works by Vivaldi, Brahms, Bloch, Mozart and more at a Concert by the Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Chorus of Noble and Greenough School from Boston, MA on Friday, June 12th.

Starting at 7pm at Wesley Methodist Church, this concert will be under the direction of Michael Turner and Kate Kayaian, and will feature violin soloist Christine Hong, and violist Alexandra Maund. Also performing will be the Junior and Senior Orchestras from the Bermuda School of Music, and students from the Menuin Foundation Music programme.

The concert is free and open to the public. Any donations made will go towards the Bursary Fund at the Bermuda School of Music.

0607 Jewellery Making

Every Sunday during the summer months join Eleanor Patton at Bermuda Rocks Jewellery to learn how to make your own stacking rings, a pair of earrings with a matching pendant, or anything your heart desires at the Bermuda Rocks Jewellery Making Classes from Sunday, June 7th.

Classes will consist of 2 to 3 students, allowing Eleanor the time to make sure everyone has her guidance. She will take you through each step of the making process, and at the end you will have some beautiful jewellery to take home with you!

Lessons are 3 to 6 hours long (with a break) depending on what you will be making. Suitable for ages 15 and up.

Wedding ring classes will be private, one couple per class. Jewellery-making parties and one-to-one tuition are also available, on request.

Prices begin at $160, including the silver materials you will be working with.

0616 Fly Brussels to Bermuda by Cessna

Come and listen to how John Tomlinson covered 6,300 miles, 9 countries and 17 bumpy landings in a ‘first’ Europe to Bermuda voyage in a Cessna 172 single engine aircraft at the latest in the BUEI Talks series, Fly Brussels to Bermuda …by Cessna!, on Tuesday, June 16th.

In 2014, Bermudian businessman, John Tomlinson, decided to fly from Europe to Bermuda over the frozen wastes of Iceland and Greenland, a treacherous route known as the ‘Northern Route’. Immediate problems for John – no plane and not a qualified pilot! Come and listen to how John covered 6,300 miles, 9 countries and 17 bumpy landings in a ‘first’ Europe to Bermuda voyage in a Cessna 172 single engine aircraft. They promise that you won’t want to miss the highs and fearful lows of this gripping journey.

There will also be a give-away of an observation flight, worth $450, on the night.

The lecture itself will start at 7.30pm and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount to anyone dining there before or after the event. Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar and the full menu will be available from 6pm – please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount. This cannot be combined with any other offers and reservations can be made by calling 295-4207.

0617 Pariah

The U.S. Consulate General and the Adult Library will showcase another free film as part of the Bermuda National Library’s regular Consulate Night at the Library series on Wednesday, June 17th.

The movie Pariah will screen at 6pm. This very powerful film addresses the struggles of a young woman to be accepted as a lesbian. It is rated R, viewer discretion advised.

0618 Bacardi Block Party

To celebrate 50 years on the Rock, Bacardi are hosting a Community Block Party for the people of Bermuda on Thursday, June 18th.

From 6pm until 10pm in front of the Bacardi World HQ on Pitts Bay Road, the focus of the evening will be on performing arts, entertainment, and fun.

In addition to a variety of food vendors, craft vendors, KidsZone activities, and a wall mural painting, two stages will be set up for a “rotating feast of entertainment”.

One stage, set on the road in front of the Bacardi property will showcase a dance exhibition. Alternating performances, a stage on the upper Bacardi lawn will be a variety of bands and local talent including Chris Darrell Latin String Trio, Sabor School of Dance, Nightlife Band w/ vocals and horns, The Kennel Boys, and a special appearance of Bermudian Nick Christopher fresh from his performance in the off Broadway hit, Motown: The Musical 1st National Tour.

You are encouraged to bring blankets to enjoy the entertainment from the Bacardi lawns.

The public will also be welcomed inside of the Bacardi building to enjoy a very special and impactful experiential performance within the large open area they call, Under the Stars – so called as it displays the constellation over Santiago de Cuba on the night of February 4th, 1862 when BACARDI rum was created.

Gina Spence Productions presents We Love You Dad, a family event at City Hall on Friday, June 19th.

From 5.15pm, there will be children’s activities including fun castle, face painting and more. Speeches and a reading of the Father’s Day Proclamation will be presented. Features such as an awards ceremony will be celebrating local organisations that provide support and empowerment to fathers and young men. You are invited to send them a short write-up on why your father should be chosen as Bermuda’s Father of the Year and the deadline for your entries is June 12th.

0627 Military Art

Enjoy a beautiful retrospective celebrating the Bermuda Regiment as Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art hosts an Exhibition of Military Art, opening to the public on Saturday, June 27th.

This specially-curated collection of art and artifacts in the Rick Faries Gallery depicts the Bermuda Regiment and its forbears’ rich history. The Regiment is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and more information can be found by following the hashtag #BR50.

Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 11am until 4.30pm on Sundays. Masterworks is closed on public holidays. General admission is $5, or free for members and children under 12.

The exhibit will run until July 29th.

0627 ACIB Canada Day

Rain or shine, you can expect some Canadian-style fun on the beach at the Association of Canadians in Bermuda’s (ACIB) 20th Annual Canada Day Beach Party at Warwick Long Bay on Saturday, June 27th.

From noon until 5pm, they will be entertaining all their Canadian, Bermudian and everywhere-else-on-the-planet-you-are-from friends with music, food and beach action at this family-friendly event. In addition to some loud and proud Canadian music, Canadian beer (plus other beers and coolers), Canadian gear (exclusive t-shirts) and… lots of Canadians, eh! There will also be lots of prizes and giveaways from WKD.

There will also be lots of drink options (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and food to buy at the party, so you are encouraged to support the ACIB by purchasing your food and beverages from them at the beach.

Catering will be from Island Restaurant Group and their true summer BBQ sizzle lineup of tasty beef burgers, chicken breast burgers and hot dogs, with a bag of chips or spicy peanut coleslaw on the side. These guys make great food and recently won Best of Bermuda’s 2014 award for Best Caterer.

Membership to ACIB can be purchased for $25 at the event and gets you two beverages of your choice and one meal selection from the BBQ.

0627 BNG Youth Red Party

The BNG Youth Arts Council presents the 4th Annual Young Members’ Party: Red Party – Celebrating Life and its Colours on Saturday, June 27th.

From noon until 2pm at Bermuda National Gallery, this fun-filled event will celebrate student members and their commitment to the arts, with art activities, music performances, raffle and prizes.

Hosted by DJ Blazian Kidd (Gracie Edwards), it will feature student performances by Keenan Bailey, Kaleb Tannock, Makeem HAZ Bartley, Mayah Williams, Shalae Robinson, Sidyney Melo and Skye Kermode, as well as student artwork by Jokiah Richardson, Sidney Mello, Skye Kermode, Tamoghna Sengupta, Shalika Robinson and Nkosi Edwards.

Donate $2 to the Bermuda National Gallery at the event and you will receive a raffle ticket for a prize draw. Raffle prizes include a 2 hour session at Just Platinum Music Recording Studio with producer Steve Easton, a VIP 30 minute voice lesson with Bermudian singer/songwriter Joy T. Barnum, a Pixma Photo all-in-one inkjet printer from Office Solutions, 2 gift certificates from Bermuda Fun Golf, and an art and craft basket from DNA Creative Shoppe. Raffle prize winners must be present during the draw.

0627 Multiple Sclerosis Medical Symposium

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Bermuda are hosting a Medical Symposium on Saturday and Sunday, June 27th and 28th.

Each event will run from 9.30am until 3pm at Elbow Beach Hotel and the speakers will be Dr. Myla Goldman, Dr. Rosalind Kalb and Kathleen Costello.

Saturday’s session is for medical and healthcare professionals only, CME credits pending approval. Sunday’s session is for the general public, although medical and healthcare professionals are also invited to attend.

Both events are free and refreshments will be provided.

Young bookworms will be interested to know that the Bermuda Youth Library’s Read to the Rhythm Reading Programme will run from Monday, June 29th until Saturday, August 15th.

Toddlers to teens can read books from different genres, with prizes to be earned for books read. Daily activities in the morning and afternoon consist of fencing, crafts, story times, scavenger hunts, movie days, and much more.

All activities cost $5 and registration is required.

0705 Anger Management Group

Solstice is offering an 8 week Anger Management Group starting on Sunday, July 5th.

One group is offered to middle school students, aged between 11 and 14 at 10am, and the other group to secondary school students, aged between 14 and 17 at 11.30am. Each group will be limited to 10 persons.

Anger is a normal emotion experienced by everyone. It plays an important function in our live, as it motives change, and propels us to action. The overall goal of this group is to dilute the intensity and guide the participants away from destructive behaviour to constructive responses.

The group sessions are $80 per session, however most insurance plans cover group therapy.
