Open Airways invite you to join them for free Asthma Education in the West End on Wednesday, May 4th.

From 9am until noon just outside of Somerset Marketplace, asthma nurses will be available, answering questions and providing asthma education to anyone who asks.

Roll out your mat and get ready to sweat as the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club invite you to experience a taste of the newest spa and boutique fitness studio on the island, exhale Bermuda, at a free Preview Class on Wednesday, May 4th.

The class has been expertly created by exhale Core Fusion co-founder, Fred DeVito and will take place at 5.30pm in the Harbourview Ballroom.

0506 BSOA Exhibits

There are four new exhibits opening at the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall on Friday, May 6th.

Member artist are invited to showcase their recent works in the Members’ Spring Show in the Onions Gallery.

In Studio A, you’ll find Intricacies & Perspectives by Michelle and Lyndell.  Lyndell and Michelle have teamed up to share their recent mosaic pieces and invite you to stop by and have a peek.

In Studio B, The Golden Triangle by Antoine Hunt will explore the circular function of the triangle in Bermudian architecture and landscape.

Finally, in the Edinburgh Gallery, you ‘ll find Ras Mykkal’s debut exhibition, Flying Flowers, with work for sale featured in his recently released book on local butterflies.

The grand opening of this show will be from 5pm until 7pm on Friday, May 6th.

Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays. The exhibits will run until Tuesday, May 31st.

Admission is free, although donations are appreciated, and all are welcome.

Shop a variety of items, including arts, crafts, yard sale items, toys, clothing, jewellery, and more at the Bermuda Flea Market, starting on Saturday, May 7th.

Located in the Southampton Rangers parking lot, the market will be open from 10am until 6pm, Mondays to Fridays and from 9am to 6pm on Saturdays, until October 1st.

All vendors are welcome. Spots are available for $25, or $15 for schools and charities.

0507 Hubert Smith Sr Mural

The popular mural of the late Hubert Smith Sr. on Angle Street will become the focus of attention on Saturday, May 7th.

From 10am until 2pm opposite the First Church of God, you can enjoy his music, light refreshments and the sale of the book, Music on the Rock.

This event is free and provides a golden opportunity to receive a fact sheet on his life and to hear his recorded voice.

0507 Make Time for Tea

Celebrate the music you thought you’d forgotten at the Bermuda Chamber Choir’s Make Time for Tea on Saturday and Sunday, May 7th and 8th.

Doors open at 2.30pm, with afternoon tea available, while the concert itself will start at 3pm.

The music is a collection of pieces that will evoke memories of childhood and yesteryear.  It will include The Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Auld Lang Syne, Shenandoah, La Vie en Rose, and I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside, amongst other pieces.  Singing along is welcomed.

The Saturday event is at Christ Church Warwick, and the Sunday event is at the Cathedral Hall, Hamilton.

Tickets are $35 for adults, $20 for children, $100 for Patrons, and available from www.pTix.bm, Bermuda Book Store, Bermuda School of Music or on the door.

Enjoy stunning views, great music and delicious food and drinks at the official grand opening of the seaside terrace at Inferno 2 Lounge’s Annual Mother’s Day Celebration on Sunday, May 8th.

0509 A Memorable Evening in Bermuda with Mark Twain

Promising an event like no other on the island, A Memorable Evening in Bermuda with Mark Twain will start on Monday, May 9th.

From 6.30pm at Fourways Inn, you can spend an evening in the company of one of Bermuda’s most famous residents.  Following a three course candlelit dinner at one of the Island’s finest restaurants, you can enjoy a remarkable after-dinner performance by Gavin Wilson as Mark Twain, one of the world’s most celebrated writers and storytellers.

This event will run weekly until September 5th.

0510 Them - World Domination by Ants

Presented by visiting scientist Dr. Jim Wetterer, Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University, Them! World Domination by Ants will take place on Wednesday, May 10th.

Jim’s research interest is the biogeography, ecology, and environmental impact of ants. While in Bermuda, one question he hopes to answer is what ant species are associated with Bermuda’s mangroves. On previous visits to Bermuda he studied and documented the island’s ant species, and wrote about the vanished plague ants of 19th century Bermuda. His talk will be about his research with native and exotic ants around the world, and of the epic war between two dominant invasive ant species that have been battling each other for ecological supremacy in Bermuda for more than 60 years.

As part of their 40th anniversary celebrations, The Bermuda Business and Professional Women’s Association (BPW Bermuda) presents Which Came First: The Career or the Egg? Breakfast Panel on Saturday, May 14th.

From 9.30am at the Fairmont Southampton, this will be a breakfast panel discussion on the impact of business on delayed parenthood and the impact of delayed parenthood on our community.

Guest panelists will include Cordell Riley (Institutional Research & Planning Coordinator), Dr. Yasmin Darwich (BPW International President) and Catherine Burns (Founder of Natural Ltd).

Join the past and current members of the Business and Professional Women’s Association of Bermuda (BPW) as they celebrate their 40th Anniversary with a formal Gala Dinner on Saturday, May 14th.

The evening will begin with cocktails at the Fairmont Southampton from 6pm, followed by dinner and dancing from 7pm.

BPW International President, Dr. Yasmin Darwich will deliver a moving keynote address and BPW Bermuda will present their Woman of the Year Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

0514 Some Enchanted Evening

Under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency The Governor, and Mrs. Fergusson, the Bermuda School of Music promise an electrifying night at their 19th Annual Some Enchanted Evening Fundraising Concert on Saturday, May 14th.

Music and jazz lovers, swingers, Lindy hoppers and jitter buggers – your time has come.  From 8pm at the Hamilton Princess, you can expect to have a musical experience that won’t be forgotten with an electrifying live sound that combines trumpets, saxophones and trombones with a rhythm section that will be here for your listening and dancing pleasure. The Bermuda School of Music’s Big Band Swing Night will feature international musicians Derrick Gardener, Albert Rivera and Joe Beaty, accompanied by your favourite local musicians to form a 16-piece ensemble.

All proceeds from this event go towards the school’s bursary program.

0515 Family Fun 5K

Designed to help support active lifestyles and raise awareness for heart disease and diabetes, the Family Fun 5K promises to be fun for the whole family on Sunday, May 15th.

Starting at 8am, participants will depart Barr’s Bay Park, head all the way down Front Street and turn left on King Street. They will then turn left on Church Street, up to Victoria Street via Parliament St, all the way past City Hall and left onto to Wesley Street back down on to Church Street. Then, they’ll turn right on Church Street and right again onto Richmond Road, all the way to Rosemont Avenue, which will take you onto Serpentine Road. You will then go left on Serpentine Road which will eventually take you to Pitts Bay Road. Finally, walkers will turn left on Pitt’s Bay Road and head back to Barr’s Bay Park. .

The route is approximately 5K and this event will not be chip-timed.

There will be healthy snacks at Barr’s Bay Park at the end of the walk.

The entry fee is $25.  Registration will be available on the day of the event and all donations are appreciated.  Proceeds will support the Bermuda Heart Foundation.

Bermuda Docs

The May edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be on Sunday, May 15th in the usual location of the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI.

A Hologram for the King will be showing at 3pm.  Tom Hanks and Sarita Choudhury star in this comedic drama.

This will be followed at 5.15pm by Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, an award-winning documentary film about Dr. Maya Angelou.

Solstice will be hosting Nicola Feldman, a life coach and mindfulness instructor, for the three session workshop, Mindfulness-Based Wellness Parent Program, starting on Wednesday, May 18th.

Nicola specialises in mindfulness-based personal and professional development coaching and training programs that support clients in creating transformative self-awareness; sustaining positive behavior change; and embedding more motivating mindsets. Her passion is helping individuals to become more authentic, energized, and balanced so that they live their lives with less stress and worry and greater peace of mind.

This is a 3 session, small-group workshop that gives parents the tools to bring the benefits of mindfulness to their parenting and their children.

Groups are kept small and intimate, allowing you to explore your personal areas for growth and learning in a safe and supportive environment through personal reflection time, group discussion, one-on-one coaching, and guided mindfulness practice.

The workshop will run on May 18th and 25th and June 1st from 9.30am until 11.30am.

0614 Real Estate Compliance

Prepare yourself for upcoming changes in the regulatory environment at the Real Estate Compliance for 2016: What You Need to Know session, presented by Certainty on Tuesday, June 14th.

From noon until 1.30pm at Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, this lunch-and-learn session will teach attendees the fundamental concepts, terms and steps to comply with the anticipated anti-money laundering (AML) requirements.  It will set out the international initiatives and circumstances which created the pressure on local authorities to implement a local AML regime.

Key concepts to be covered include: the key functions of the designated compliance person; the functions of the regulator/supervisor; the components and impacts of an AML regulatory framework; the expectations surrounding risk assessments; the unique organisational characteristics which inform compliance programmes; and how to make policies and procedures pragmatic and relevant.

After this session, attendees will have enough information to determine the extent of the work required to comply with AML obligations.

Enjoy an afternoon of sailing and swimming as CastAway Bermuda: The Boatride will take place aboard the MV Elizabeth on Thursday, June 16th.

Boarding of the MV Elizabeth will begin promptly at 1pm at Albuoy’s Point for a 2pm departure, before returning to the Dock at 6pm.  A unique treat to Castaway Bermuda will be the ability to swim in the beautiful waters of Bermuda, so make sure you wear your bathing suit. Castaway will feature an international and local cast of DJs and will be inclusive of food.
