December 21st, 2016 Bermuda Calendar Update

Morning Kids!

Well, it’s that time of year again!  This is my last post of 2016 so I just wanted to wish you all a very merry Christmas for Sunday and a very Happy New Year when it comes!  And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, then I hope you enjoy the happy vibes at this time of year. Be good to each other and I hope 2017 is your best year yet!  There is still time to leave your mark on 2016 as well so why not get out there and do something memorable?

My next post will be on Wednesday, January 4th. Events can still be added to the calendar, as usual, through the Submit Your Event section in the meantime.

Anyway, down to the latest update on what’s happening in Bermuda.  Check out all your NYE options on the Calendar here or see the Quick Recap at the end of the post for a handy list (keep your eye on the calendar itself for submissions made after this post is published).  As always, this post includes an update on everything added to the calendar since the previous week, while the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of the post is a full listing of all upcoming events, including those previously covered in previous posts.

Hope to see lots of you on Elbow Beach with your Santa hats on!

Keep the Christmas magic going beyond the day itself at BUEI Films presents The Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker on Thursday, December 29th at 5pm

The screening will be at 5pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium.  In Peter Wright’s classic production for The Royal Ballet, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic – a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara and the Nutcracker are whisked off to the Kingdom of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky’s score contains some of ballet’s best-known melodies, from the flurrying Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy – all brilliantly set in Wright’s choreography.  The running time is 135 minutes with one interval.

This production features Bermuda’s own Ravi Cannonier-Watson – come and meet Ravi at this special event!

The cost is $20 for BUEI members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students.  Part proceeds to help with Ravi’s school expenses at The Royal Ballet.

For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 294-0204 or visit the Oceans Gift Shop at BUEI.

Returning for the second consecutive year, the Annual Gosling’s to Fairmont Southampton Road Race will be held on Sunday, January 8th.

This is the first running race of 2017 and attracts competitors both locally and internationally.  It is a great final warm-up for the Bermuda Marathon Weekend, which starts on January 13th.

The race will take runners on a 7.2 mile course between Goslings Headquarters on Dundonald Street, Hamilton, and Fairmont Southampton’s private beach club. The event also includes a competitive walking category, a 3-member team relay, and a Junior 3K race.

This year’s race will take the competitors on a new route from Gosling’s Headquarters on Dundonald Street, over Washington Street, then over Cedar Avenue and Burnaby Street to Front Street, then along East Broadway, The Lane, Harbour Road, Burnt House Hill, Middle Road and up the Fairmont Southampton Driveway before finishing at Fairmont Southampton’s private beach club.

The main draw prize is a four-night stay for two at The Fairmont San Francisco, California with round-trip JetBlue tickets. There will be prizes for the top male and female finishers of the Junior 3K in the following age brackets: 8 to 10; 11 to 12; and 13 to 15. Prizes will also be awarded to the top finishers in the male, female, and mixed categories.  The adult race has prizes for the top male and female finishers in the following categories: 16 to 39 (open); 40 to 49; 50 to 59; 60 to 69; and 70 and over. The top three male and top three female walkers will win prizes, as well as the first tourists, and the winning Fairmont and Gosling’s employees.

The continued partnership between Gosling’s and Fairmont Southampton, two leading companies in Bermuda, ensures that there will be a great running event to kick off the Bermuda racing year.  Fairmont Southampton has been a major sponsor in racing since 1978 starting with what began as the Princess to Princess Race, MAAC’s first organised event. It was then named Fairmont to Fairmont Race. Fairmont Southampton is proud to continue as a sponsor of this popular road race event in Bermuda, and looks forward to continuing this tradition with Gosling’s for many years to come. The Butterfield Cup and the Peter Lever Cup are ready to be won.  A special logo for the race was created by Kelley & Company & Etc., to symbolize this balance of business and leisure, showing the distinctive Goslings seal in pink colour, balancing both a barrel of rum and a running shoe.

Fairmont Southampton is offering a Gosling’s to Fairmont Southampton Road Race Package with luxurious accommodation, Gosling’s welcome gift and one-way transfer on the race day. Rates start from $169 per night, excluding taxes, gratuities and resort levy.  Terms and conditions apply.   For more information on this package, visit http://bit.ly/2hq3QRx.

The Gosling’s to Fairmont Southampton Road Race is organised by MAAC and sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association.

For junior participants, the fee is $5 for current MAAC / MAAC Junior Members, $10 for all others, and free for Gold Members of MAAC (contact the MAAC Jr Co-ordinator).  For adults, the cost is $30 for current MAAC Members, $40 for all others, $50 for late entries, $7 for Gold Members of MAAC, and $60 for Relay Teams (only $20 per person).  Please note that $7 per entry is now included in your race fee as your registration with the BNAA for this event in lieu of BNAA Membership.

This year, the event will benefit Meals on Wheels.

For more information, or to register for the race, visit www.RaceDayWorld.com.

Another great opportunity to listen to entertaining presentations on a variety of topics, without worrying that any of the speakers will waffle on for too long, as the 18th edition of PechaKucha Night Bermuda will be on Friday, February 17th.

PechaKucha Nights were started in Japan and have a 20×20 presentation format where each speaker shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images.  Since there is no pausing or going back, speakers have no choice but to keep to their allotted time.  Following each presentation is a 3 minute 40 second Q&A session with the audience.

Doors open at 6.30pm and presentations begin at 7pm.  This will take place at Somerset Cricket Club, where there will be a cash bar and dinner available to purchase.

Admission is free however donations are welcomed and all are invited.

For more information, visit the Pechakucha Bermuda Facebook Page or contact Nicky Gurret  at gurret@northrock.bm.
