Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend, full of kites, hot cross buns and fishcakes!  The weather is beautiful and there’s plenty more stuff to do in Bermuda – here’s the rundown of what has been added to the calendar since last week’s post.

It’s almost time for the annual Ag Show and Masterworks Museum will be offering free art courses at their Ag and Arts Show from Thursday to Saturday, April 20th to 22nd.

There will be two activities per day from 10am until noon and then from 2pm until 4pm.  Offering something for everyone, including everything from abstract drawing and painting wine bottles to surreal sculpting, these workshops are for all ages.  Children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.   To maximize the amount of participants, they are limiting each individual to one workshop so you are invited to register now before spots fill up.

Admission into the gallery and museum will also be free during these dates so you can come on in and enjoy their 30th anniversary exhibition.

BUEI Screens presents the films The Salesman and Personal Shopper on Sunday, April 23rd.

Both films will screen in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI, starting with The Salesman (rated PG-13) at 3pm.  After their old flat becomes damaged, Emad and Rana, a young couple living in Tehran, are forced to move into a new apartment. However, once relocated, a sudden eruption of violence linked to the previous tenant of their new home dramatically changes the couple’s life, creating a simmering tension between husband and wife.

This will be followed by Personal Shopper (rated R) at 5.15pm.  Olivier Assayas, the internationally-acclaimed director of Clouds of Sils Maria and Summer Hours, returns with this ethereal and mysterious ghost story starring Kristen Stewart as a high-fashion personal shopper to the stars who is also a spiritual medium. Grieving the recent death of her twin brother, she haunts his Paris home, determined to make contact with him.

The Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard are opening two new shows, Turquoise and Take it Outside on Sunday, April 23rd.

Turquoise is a members’ show with only one rule: turquoise must be the predominant color.  This show will include a large selection of art created in all media.

Take it Outside is a solo show by Margaret Potts featuring new works in Oil and Palette Knife.

The opening is from 5.30pm until 7pm on Sunday, April 23rd and the show runs until May 21st.

Admission is free. The Arts Centre is open daily from 10am until 5pm from April 1st, and is wheelchair accessible.

The Yoga Centre invite you to their Yoga for Cancer Workshop on Tuesday, April 25th.

From noon until 2pm , this workshop is open to all levels and will be conducted by psychotherapist, yoga therapist, yoga teacher/trainer and internationally renowned presenter Antonio Sausys.

This workshop integrates techniques, thoughtful insights and, (why not!) humour, toward a dynamic class intended to provide practitioners with tools to better understand and cope with life with cancer. Suitable for those having or having had cancer as well as those related to it, this workshop features the use of specific series and techniques to accomplish specific goals. These goals include coping with the secondary effects of treatment and surgery as well as establishing a new psychosomatic dialogue with the body toward a stronger identification with the Spiritual aspects of the self that cannot have cancer.

Ten strong Bermudian athletes will be competing in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup right here in home waters this June.  You are invited to Get to Know TeamBDA on Wednesday, April 26th.

Our TeamBDA will race against the world’s best youth sailors in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, in qualifiers on June 12th and 13th and finals on June 20th and 21st.

From 6pm until 7pm at Liberty Theatre, you will enjoy three short films and Q&A with the entire team.  You can meet and greet Bermuda’s home team, ask about their journey, learn how their family support has lifted them to greatness, and be inspired by their insights, courage and dedication.

This event is free to the public.  You are invited to arrive early for a seat and TeamBDA giveaways.

The late Hubie Brown ran the jazz club for years with his beloved wife Molly to the point where it became an institution for local jazz with many visiting musicians sitting in. The closing came as a shock to many and on its last night Dale Butler showed up with a video camera and a still camera to capture it all. First shown in 2010 it will bring back many fond memories.

The screening will be from 6pm until 8pm at The Leopards’ Club and food will be available for sale.

Admission is $10 and the book Music on the Rock will be on sale at a reduced price of $30. Tickets are available at the door.

BUEI and KatKids present a screening and discussion of the film Sold on Thursday, April 27th.

Starting at 6.30pm, this is the Bermuda premiere of this film and will raise awareness of the problem of global sex trafficking and to help raise funds for KatKids’ Nepali partner charity’s centre in Nepal for girls recovering from sex trafficking. The film will be introduced by HE Governor, John Rankin, who was the former Ambassador to Nepal.

Based on true stories, Sold is the story of a young girl, Lakshmi, who journeys from a pastoral, rural village in Nepal to a gritty brothel/prison in Kolkata, India. Sold is directed by Academy and Emmy award-winner Jeffrey D. Brown and Executive Produced by two time Academy-Award winner Emma Thompson and stars Gillian Anderson, David Arquette and Tillotama Shome.  KatKid’s exclusive Nepali scarves and silver jewelry will also be available for sale on the night.

The Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation (KAF) present their annual fundraiser Kaleidoscopic Spring Jamboree on Saturday, April 29th.

From 9.30am until 3pm at their premises on Jubilee Road, this fun-filled family event brings literacy to life.  The Jamboree is based on 6 carefully chosen books which are brought to life under the story tree and then animated through lively games and crafts throughout KAF’s backyard.  Promising an event you won’t want to miss, there will also be bake-stalls, cake walks, sensory play, and prizes…there may even be a pony.  This event is kindly sponsored by AXIS.

The Club at Fritholme Gardens invite you to try belly dance and/or vintage, swing/jazz dance-fitness classes as alternative ways to get in shape at their two new Dance Fit courses, starting on Wednesday, May 3rd.

Dance Fit classes offer great cardio workouts, muscle toning for your arms, legs, back, bum and tum, improved flexibility, grace, and coordination, and are a joyful and expressive way to exercise.

Belly Fit will run from 6.15pm until 7.15pm and in this course you will learn the basics of belly dance. The movements range from tight isolations to fluid undulations. Belly Fit is offered to women only.

Swing Fit will run from 7.30pm until 8.30pm and is a high-energy class with dance movements coming from the Charleston and Jitterbug dance eras. No partner is required and both men and women are welcome to join.

Each course will run for 8 weeks.

The cost is $160 for one course, $280 for both courses or $25 for class drop-ins.

The Bermuda Philharmonic Society is hosting a Movie Fundraiser Screening of Florence Foster Jenkins on Saturday, May 6th.

From 7pm at Liberty Theatre, this movie features Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, co-starring Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg.  The ticket price includes a small popcorn and drink.

The Bermuda Historical Society Museum is celebrating its 60th year at Par-la-Ville at their Diamond Jubilee at the Museum event on Saturday, July 29th.

The opening welcome will be at 10am followed by talks on the Prisoners of War held in Bermuda, Crafts and Play in Bermuda, and other topics. The Steel Pan Player and the Gombeys will be in the Park next door between noon and 1pm and then the talks will resume at 1pm.

The play is a powerful work of historical fiction, offering a glimpse into the physical and psychological experiences of the Africans who eventually became African- Bermudians during the course of a transatlantic experience that begins in Angola more than 500 years ago.
