BUEI Screens presents the films Frantz and Tommy’s Honour on Sunday, May 21st.

Both films will screen in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI, starting with Frantz (PG-13, runtime of 113 minutes) at 3pm.

Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, (1914-1918), Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation”: Anna, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed during trench warfare, and Adrien, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz, conjured up in evocative flashbacks.

This will be followed by Tommy’s Honour (PG, runtime of 112 minutes)  at 5.15pm.  Tommy’s Honour is based on the powerfully moving true story of the challenging relationship between “Old” Tom and “Young” Tommy Morris, the dynamic father-son team who ushered in the modern game of golf. As their fame grew, Tom and Tommy, Scotland’s Golf Royalty, were touched by drama and personal tragedy. At first matching his father’s success, Tommy’s talent and fame grew to outshine his father’s accomplishments and respect as founder of the Open Championship in 1860 with a series of his own triumphs. But in contrast to Tommy’s public persona, his personal turmoil ultimately led him to rebel against both the aristocracy who gave him opportunity and the parents who shunned his passionate relationship with his wife.

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs invite you to the next Bermudian Heartbeats Film Night with a screening of Vanishing Sail on Thursday, June 8th.

The screening will begin at 6pm at BUEI.  Written and directed by Alexis Andrews, Vanishing Sail is a 2015 film with a running time of 1 hour and 28 minutes.

On the island of Carriacou, West Indies, the last wooden sailboat builder dreams of saving a great tradition passed down the generations from Scottish settlers that sailed here centuries ago. The film follows Alwyn Enoe’s progress and despair over three years – from hauling trees out of the forest with his sons, to a final traditional launching ceremony on the bayside.  Stories of the old Caribbean – trading by sail and smuggling contraband from the freeport of St. Barthelemy interweave a tribute to the independent spirit of a small island community.

This event is free to the public, but spaces are limited. Free tickets are available from the office, from BUEI and online at www.BDAtix.bm.

For more information, contact Dr. Kim Dismont Robinson, Folklife Officer, on 292-1681 or kdrobinson@gov.bm, or visit www.CommunityandCulture.bm.
