Well, if all the April showers we had are anything to go by, we are in for a flower-tastic May!

 

Here is your weekly update with all the latest Bermuda events to be added to the network of calendars since last week’s post.  As always, be sure to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of all upcoming Bermuda events, including those previously covered in earlier posts.

 

The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club’s ever-popular Happy Hour is back for the 2018 season, with the return of Marina Nights on Friday, May 4th.

From 5pm until 9pm every Friday evening throughout the summer, you can relax harbourside with your favourite drink and start off your weekend in style.  There will be a bar with happy hour drink tickets, a DJ, and VIP seating with waiter service and a limited snack menu from 1609 Restaurant & Bar.

There is no cover charge and this event will continue weekly until the end of September.

Bermuda Red Cross are asking schools, companies, retail stores and organisations to wear red and white for Red, White and Do Day on Friday, May 4th.

May is Red Cross Month and they encourage all to take part and make a donation of $5 to help them continue their community work.

The Pink Beach Club at The Loren invite you to join them for a Kentucky Derby Fiesta on Saturday, May 5th.

BUEI Films presents a screening of The Bernstein Centenary on Saturday, May 5th.

The Royal Ballet celebrates the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with an all-Bernstein programme from the Company’s three associate choreographers, Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon.

The film begins at 3pm in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium. Want to unwind after a long day and paint into the sunset?  Scribbles Art Shack have brought back their famous Sunset Paint Nights, with the next on Saturday, May 5th.

The first in the new Sunset series will kick off with a Cinco de Mayo theme from 6pm at the Flatts inlet, near Rustico.  You are invited to come out and enjoy a night of positive vibes, great music and great company.  You can also bring along your favourite foods and beverages to enjoy or purchase a Cinco de Mayo special from Rustico.  This event is for over-18s.

BUEI Talks presents Bermuda’s Deep Ocean Revealed on Monday, May 7th.

Ever wondered what is on the top of Argus Bank? Or down the sides of Bermuda’s ancient subsea volcanoes? Join the Nekton team who will reveal extraordinary discoveries from their Mission – the XL Catlin Deep Ocean Survey – that includes the discovery of over 100 new species, the confimation of a new zone in the Ocean, the deepest ever recorded lion fish globally, a newly discovered biogeographical link between Bermuda and Australasia stretching back 3 to 5 million years, new maps of Bermuda’s seamounts, and a major new biodiversity hotspot. The event will include a film premiere of the Mission results, presentation of discoveries by the world-leading marine scientist Professor Rogers followed by a Q&A with Mission participants from Bermuda.

BUEI Films and L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will be hosting a screening of L’étudiante et Monsieur Henri (The student and Monsieur Henri) on Tuesday, May 8th.

Screening in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium at 8pm, this French comedy/drama with English subtitles is from director Ivan Calbérac, starring Claude Brasseur, Guillaume de Tonquédec and Noemie Schmidt.  The running time is 1 hour 38 minutes.

The Ministry of National Security is joining with Bermuda’s interfaith community and helping agencies to host a National Day of Peace on Wednesday, May 9th.

From 5pm at the Bermuda National Sports Centre, the event aims to bring the community together to remember those lost through tragic circumstances. It will also afford those in attendance the opportunity to engage in supportive and healing activities, and will showcase inspirational musical and dance performances by Last Call, Dellwood Middle School, Arijahknow Live Wires and more, as well as activities catering to our young people.

This event is free and all are welcome.

May is theatre month at Verdmont and the Bermuda National Trust (BNT) are presenting three exciting interactive productions featuring local actors including Adam Gauntlett and Canadian theatre group, Live History.

The first production, BNT Presents: The Last Stand will be at 7pm on Wednesday, May 9th.  Follow the ever devoted maid Mary as she hopes to save her home and workplace. She works at Verdmont that has stood for generations and is now at risk of being lost unless something can be done to save it. Come and help Mary to save this wonderful home filled with great memories.  Wine and cheese will be included.  Tickets are $40 for members, $45 for non-members and $20 for students.

There will be two different offerings for The BNT Presents: The Round Table on Friday and Saturday, May 11th and 12th.  For both, you have been invited to attend a grand wedding rehearsal dinner alongside most of the town who have been divided over long standing issues for years. The host needs your help to follow the clues and find a missing treasured wedding ring in time for the ceremony to take place.  This will be at 7pm on the Friday and you will also enjoy a candlelit 3-course dinner catered by Four-Ways with wine.  Tickets are $135 and include the theatre and dinner.  On the Saturday, this will be at 4pm and afternoon tea is included.  Tickets are $40 for members, $45 for non-members and $20 for students.

The dress code is smart casual and you are asked not to wear stilettos.

The Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI) offers comprehensive professional designation programmes, reference books and a variety of other learning opportunities. BOMI Designations are backed by the Institute’s 30 years of excellence in developing and offering advanced education programs and have become marks of distinction throughout the commercial property industry.

As an example of what’s on offer, the Facilities Management Administrator (FMA) designation benefits new and experienced facilities professionals. Through its in-depth coverage of critical-need topics, including planning and project management, facilities technologies, finance and investment, and environmental health and worker safety, the FMA programme helps position facilities managers as key strategic contributors within their organisations.

Enjoy the spectacle of a track and field event featuring top World Class International Athletes, with Commonwealth, Olympic Games, World Champion gold, silver and bronze medalist competing, at the Bermuda Invitational Permit Meet on Friday, May 11th.

The event will kick off at 6pm at National Sports Centre.  Male events to be held will include 100m (featuring Bermuda’s Commonwealth athlete, Tre Houston), 110m hurdles, 200m (featuring Tre Houston), 400m, 800m Shot Put, Long Jump (featuring Bermuda’s Commonwealth athlete, Tyrone Smith), 200m Para, and 400m Para.

Female events will include 100m, 100m hurdles, 200m, 400m, High Jump (featuring Bermudian CARIFTA medalist Sakari Famous), 100m Para (featuring Bermuda’s Paralympian Jessica Lewis), 200m Para (featuring Jessica Lewis), and 4X100m Primary, Middle and High School.

The cost is $15 on the Eastern uncovered stands, $30 on the Western Covered stands, and $55 for VIP on the Western Covered stands (includes food and parking).  Tickets can be purchased online at www.pTix.bm, at pTix’s physical location at Innovation House on Reid Street, or from BNAA (Bermuda National Athletics Association) board members.  You can also purchase tickets with cash at gates 4 and 5 only (Parsons Road) at the event itself.

Learn more about two programmes offered by Bermuda College at their upcoming AMA/ILM Information Session on Monday, May 14th.

AMA Certificate programmes by the American Management Association have been developed by industry leaders and backed by more than 75 years of management training experience.  The certificate programmes encompass all areas of contemporary management including supervision, human resources, manufacturing, finance, sales, marketing and planning. The courseware delivers comprehensive training and real-world answers.
Certificates are earned over two semesters. Entrance is accepted in the Fall (September) and Spring (January) semesters. Candidates interested in earning their AMA certificates must successfully complete 10 Continuing Education Units. Each module completed is equivalent to 2 CEUs earned. Delegates must complete the core course and select any of the electives offered in any given semester to make up the 10 CEUs.

ILM Leadership and Management Development is offered by The Institute of Leadership & Management, the UK’s number one awarding organisation for leadership and management. With over 2,500 approved centres and registering 90,000 learners each year ILM offers a wide range of qualifications designed to give practicing or aspiring managers a solid foundation in their formal development in their role, with the courses leaving a positive impact on learner’s confidence and career progression.

See Andrew Stevenson’s latest aerial and underwater video to be included in his upcoming documentary film, The Secret Lives of the North Atlantic Humpback Whales, on Monday, May 14th.

There will be two lectures, one at 6.30pm and one at 8.30pm, both in the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI.  Andrew will be showing behind the scenes footage as well as some of the footage that will go into the documentary.  Highlights include aerial footage of a herd of 25 whales fighting over a female, dolphins swimming with whales, seven whales filmed over a week long period and lots more.

Offered through the Division of Professional and Career Education (PACE), in conjunction with the Construction Association of Bermuda, the National Center for Construction Education & Research 5-Week NCCER Core Summer Boot Camp will start on Monday, May 28th.

This is an intense course covering basic construction, including Basic Safety; Introduction to Hand Tools; Introduction to Construction Drawings; Basic Employability Skills; Introduction to Construction Math; Introduction to Power Tools; Basic Communication Skills; and Introduction to Materials Handling.

Classes will be held at Bermuda College and will run Monday to Thursday from 9am until 4pm between May 28th and June 28th, or from 5.30pm until 8.30pm, Monday to Thursday, between May 28th and July 12th.

Registration is underway now.  No previous experience is required but an excellent work ethic is expected.

The cost is $1320 and funding is available from Workforce Development for approved candidates.

The Bermuda Anglers Club would like to invite teams to fish the 51st International Light Tackle Tournament (ILTT) on Saturday and Sunday, June 23rd and 24th.

Teams should contain up to 4 anglers, and juniors aged 16 years or younger and ladies are encouraged.  This is a qualifying event for the Offshore World Championships and 12lb and 30lb (marlin release) line classes will be used.  Fishing will start at 8am and weigh-ins will be at Barr’s Bay Park from 3.30pm on each day.

The cost is $500 per adult and $400 per junior.
