Good morning Troops!
I am kind of shocked and distressed to find out that it isn’t Friday yet – is anyone else having a really long week or is it just me? Anyway, enough complaining from me, here are the latest Bermuda events:
Last time was such a success that they’re making it a regular occurrence! Worldwide Wednesdays at Ten is an offering of live entertainment every other Wednesday, starting tonight. M. Brian Swan (live samples, groove box and bass) and Nicola Swan (vocals), also known as 1Undread, will be performing from 6pm until 8pm with food and drink available at Happy Hour prices between 4pm and 7pm. For more details, contact 295-0857 or ten@yellowfin.bm.
The next in the Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series will be on Thursday, August 23rd as the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs hosts the 7th Annual Dr. Kenneth E. Robinson/Cyril Outerbridge Packwood Memorial Lecture. Dr. Keith Tinker will speak on The Bermudas and the Bahamas: A Tale of Two Sister States, at 12.30pm at Coco Reef. The fee is $15, which includes the talk and lunch. For tickets, contact the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs on 292-1681.
The struggles and triumphs of a society’s prejudices and battles with sexual orientation and everyone’s right to equality, respect and dignity – if this sounds like a subject matter close to your heart, then you won’t want to miss the Centre for Justice’s free movie screening of the Bahamian film, Children of God, tomorrow night at BUEI. Light refreshments will be served from 6pm with the film starting at 6.30pm and then followed by a post-movie panel discussion featuring the writer/director, Kareem Mortimer, Chen Foley (Centre for Justice), Pastor Sylvia Hayward-Harris (The Vision Ministry), Nelleke Hollis (Amnesty International Bermuda) and moderated by Rick Richardson. For more information, call 542-8181 or email info@justice.bm
If you think that Friday is too late to start the weekend then you’ll be interested to know that Ming Mambo are inviting local salseros to their next Social Night at Inferno Lounge on Thursday, August 23rd. From 9pm until 1am, local DJs will be bringing their salsa, bachata and other Latin music playlists so you can either chill out and soak in the ambiance or strap on your dance shoes and join in. For more details, visit www.mingmambo.com.
Bermuda Department of Tourism invite you to their outdoor entertainment event, Bermuda Nights at Barr’s Bay Park. This is one of their signature events and aims to showcase Bermuda’s best local entertainers, cultural performers and Bermy food in a stunning outdoor setting to offer a true Bermudian experience. The next is this Saturday, August 25th, with future dates being September 8th and 22nd, and will be from 8pm until 11pm each night. Please note that all events are weather dependent – for more information visit www.gotobermuda.com or contact the Bermuda Department of Tourism on 292-0023.
To mark September as National Gynaecologic Cancer Awareness Month, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is hosting a free health talk on Thursday, September 6th. This will be presented by their Education Officer, Rhonda Smith-Simmons and will talk about the five major cancers of the female reproductive system, the signs and symptoms of each, which is the most preventable, who is at greatest risk, and the latest treatments and therapies. Online registration is available by clicking here. For further information, contact 236-1001 or email info@chc.bm.
They say that prevention is better than cure – but how about learning how plants contain the power to be both? Naturopathic physician Dr. Kuni Frith-Black is hosting a series of Fall Herb Classes in Paget – Introduction to Medicinal Herbs and Plants in Bermuda is a 9 week programme on Saturdays between 11am and 3pm from September 8th until November 3rd. The flyer contains a breakdown of what each week will cover and pricing information can be obtained by contacting Dr. Kuni Frith-Black directly on 238-1227.
Great news for anyone who thinks we need more of a late night food selection – Kathy’s Kaffee (the Emporium Building at 69 Front Street) are now offering late night hours from midnight until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. Now you can order such delights as the Avocado Bacon Cheeseburger, gyros, spicy fries, milkshakes and more, while waiting on your taxi home (don’t drink and drive, kids!) and they’ll even do curbside delivery. More information on their weekly specials will be available on their Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/kathyskaffee.
