Happy Friday Kids!

There are but a few weeks left of boating season so you had better make the most of it before it’s gone!  Luckily, there are THREE cruise options in this post alone that are coming up in September.  Here’s what’s happening in Bermuda:

I already let you know about the Moonlight Movie Series having a Labour Day Weekend screening but they have managed to sneak in an extra one tonight! Movies in the City will be at #1 Car Park on Front Street with family-friendly fun from 7pm, and the movies showing when it gets dark.  The early feature is The Lorax (Rated PG) which will start at 9pm, followed by Battleship (Rated PG-13) at 11pm.  For more information about the Moonlight Movie Series, call 295-4917 or visit www.moonlightmovieseries.com.

The good folks at Chewstick are even busier than normal this week with two Griot Sessions and two workshops in addition to their regular Sunday night Open-Mic Jam Session!  Bermudian puppet master Alex Winfield is home and, along with mezzo soprano Latana Phoung, will presenting the Griot Session, The Other Side, an operatic puppetry experience tonight from 7pm (doors open at 6pm).  The cost of entry is $10 and the show will be streaming live at www.chewstick.org.

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 25th, Latana Phoung will host a class on Finding Your Voice, helping participants to find their own personal singing voice with a classical music training regime.  This will run from 2pm until 5pm and is open to singers of all levels, from shower singers to professionals and costs $20 per person. Space is limited so RSVP to info@chewstick.org to secure your spot.

Another Griot Session will be on Saturday night from 9pm until 2am with DIA showcasing all original music from a variety of genres.  Opening acts are ukelelist Mike Hind and hip hop MC Haz.  D.I.A. will showcase all original music from a variety of genres and will also feature the reggae melodies of Live Wires and hip hop from Imari, K.A.S.E. and da R?ddla. The cost of entry is $10 and the show will be streaming live at www.chewstick.org.

The following day, Sunday, August 26th, Alex Winfield is hosting a Puppet Making & Movement Workshop from 2pm until 5pm. The cost is $20 per person, no supplies are necessary and all ages are welcome.  Space is limited, so you are invited to sign-up in advance by emailing info@chewstick.org.  All of these events are in the usual venue of  The Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe on the corner of Court Street and Elliot Street.

BRFU are hosting a Bermuda Rugby Booze Cruise on Saturday, September 1st.  The boat will have an open bar and will depart Albuoy’s Point at 6pm, returning at 9.30pm.  Tickets cost $60 and are available from any national team member or from brfuBoozeCruise@gmail.com.  All proceeds go towards the Bermuda National Men’s XV World Cup Qualifying Campaign.

Somerset weren’t the only winners at Cup Match this year as Team Soca also reigned supreme at the Soca vs Reggae Cup Match After-Party.  To celebrate, I.O.P. & D’General presents the Soca Team Victory Cruise and D’General’s Birthday aboard the UberVida on Sunday, September 2nd.   The cruise departs #1 Car Park at 8pm, returning at 11pm with music by Team Soca (Trini Boy, D’Nice, Selecta Fray and D’General) while New Era will mix it up and play Dancehall, Hip Hop and R&B favourites. Tickets are $30 and must be bought in advance since there will not be any tickets sold at the boat.  Over a third have gone already and they are available directly from D’General at 300-1049 or info@d-general.com. The after-party will be at Captain’s and entry is free with cruise bands or $20 on the door.

Celebrating 50 years of independence, the Jamaican Association (Bermuda) presents their Annual Independence Cruise on Saturday, September 15th.  The boat will board at 8.30pm, leaving Albouy’s Point at 9pm and returning at midnight.  The ticket price includes a full meal, cash bar, music by Magnum Force and After Dark and a free afterparty at Shine’s. Tickets are $50 in advance (available from Fish N Ting, Jamaican Grill Court Street, In Between Boutique and Executive Members) or $75 at the dock.
