Happy September Kids!

Well, that was another fun holiday weekend but, sadly, summer is almost over. The leaves will soon start to turn shades of autumn red and gold before floating and falling from the trees. The lush greenery will soon be replaced by soft snowfall on the bare branches.  Wait a minute, we live in Bermuda, so this won’t happen! It might get colder and rainier but at least it’s still green and pretty! Anyway, don’t get the winter blues, there are lots of things coming up:

Of particular interest to parents, educators, allied health professionals, and those who work directly with children with special needs, the first event in Tomorrow’s Voices’ Yearly 2012/13 Training Institute Series is an evening with Sean Barron and Barbara Protopapa, a couple who consider themselves recovered from Autism. Their seminar, Anything is Possible, will be on Saturday, September 8th **UPDATE: this has been cancelled due to stupid Hurricane Leslie – rescheduled date to follow** at the Cathedral Hall, Church Street from 6pm until 8.30pm and you are invited to come and hear them share their compelling and inspiring stories of navigating through childhood, adolescence, and teenage years with Autism
to become adults “healed” from autism because it no longer adversely affects their day to day lives. Pre-registration is available online at www.tomorrowsvoices.bm and Professional Development Hours can be earned for those that Pre-Register. Admission is $25 (attendees can now pay online or at the door) and refreshments will be served. To RSVP, contact info@tomorrowsvoices.bm or 297-4342 (walk-ins are welcome too).

After a short break for summer, the monthly Ciné Club from L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will return to BUEI on Tuesday, September 11th at 8pm. This month’s selection is a showing of Les Femmes du 6eme Etage (The Women on the 6th Floor).  Tickets are $5 for members, $8 for non-members and $3 students. Full details can be found at www.alliancefrancaise.bm.

Pembroke Rotary Club are hosting a Cocktail Party on Thursday, September 13th from 5.30pm until 7.30pm at Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club.  This event is a fundraiser for Bermuda and Haiti and a silent auction will also be held.  Tickets cost $50 and are available from www.bdatix.com.

The 1st Nelson Bascome Focus Trophy Football Match will be held on Saturday, September 15th, with two football matches at Devonshire Recreation Field.  Gates open at 2pm and kickoff is at 3pm. The first game will see the Bermuda’s Leading Politicians (including Zane DeSilva, Wayne Furbet, Michael Weeks and Mark Pettingill) face Bermuda’s Finest Football Players (including Donald Norford, Garth Punchy Dill, Shawn Smith and Walter Musson) while the second game will pit Bermuda’s Youngsters against the Professionals, with guest appearances from two former EPL players.  This family-friendly event will include commentary by Bootsie, a Fun castle, Gombeys and door prizes.  Nelson was a close friend and supporter of Focus and his wife Shirlene is supporting the event by presenting The Winning Trophy. Tickets are $7 per head, $20 for a family of four, free for under-10s and $150 for Patrons (includes balcony seating and an afterplay reception) and are available from www.bdatix.com, All Wrapped Up, Fabulous Fashions or at the gate. All proceeds from the gate and door prize go directly to Focus Counselling Service (Reg Charity #371).

L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will be hosting a Pétanque Tournament on Saturday, September 22nd at the pétanque lane of Bermuda College from 4pm. This is the French form of boules, traditionally played with metallic balls on a dirt surface and the event is open to players (whether experienced or novice) and spectators alike. You are invited to bring your favourite wine, snacks and blanket or beach chair, as well as your pétanque balls, if you have them. L’Alliance Française will provide baguettes, cheese and snacks for the children, as well as the chance to win a basket full of French specialties by guessing its weight. The minimum fee to enter the raffle is $10 and additional donations will also be welcome!  The pétanque is free.

Good news Bargain Hunters, Hera Boutique in the Walker Arcade are currently having a 50% sale.  It will end on September 14th so grab something while you can.
