Happy Hump Day, Kids!
It’s been a while since the last one but please mark your diaries for Saturday, May 11th, the next Nothing to Chew in Bermuda dinner event! Rather than the usual food and wine pairing, we are doing an awesome Tapas Feast with a Cocktail Flight at Margarita’s Grill with part proceeds going to charity. At a loose end tonight? Celebrate the season by dressing in your best brights and pastels at Spring Salsa Fling tonight, Wednesday, April 24th, at Shine’s House of Music. The evening will begin with a free dance class at 8.30pm and then there will be social dancing, including salsa, bachata and hustle until 1am. There is no cover charge. From 6pm, you can enjoy mini makeovers from Lush Makeup, Lash & Brow Bar, quick fixes from Headway Hair & Body, Accessorising Your Outfit With Jewellery from Atlantic Jewellery Design Studio (using newly trained models from I.M.A, a division of Cranleigh), tips from Diane Whitaker (Executive Director of I.M.A.) on how to walk properly in high heels, Thinking Beyond the Wine Bottle: Perfect Hostess Gifts under $49 from Island Trading, Questions and Answers with Paula: Bermuda’s leading female contractor, Flowers Make the Perfect Home Accessories from Flowers by GiMi, Design Tips For Your Home by Interior Designers, Burst into Spring in Vibrant Colour: Design your perfect gemstone palette at the Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bar, Spin the Wheel for a chance to win cupcakes from Daisyfield Chocolate Cupcakes, samples from La Trattoria (as well as a complimentary glass of Prosecco with dinner should you choose to go there after) and a chance to win fabulous raffle prizes. Although this is a free event, they are asking for a minimum donation of $10 with all proceeds benefiting the Women’s Resource Centre.
Mark your calendars, art lovers, as there are four new exhibits opening on Friday, April 26th at Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. The Onions Gallery and Studio A will both be exhibiting Heritage Month: Colours, Sights and Sounds of Bermuda, a collaboration between City Hall and BSoA to coincide with the City Art Festival. The exhibit is a competition and will focus on the beauty of Bermuda and the art it inspires. The Edinburgh Gallery will showcase Art and Me, a colourful exhibition of work from some of Bermuda’s youngest artists, students of West Pembroke, Victor Scott Primary, Dellwood Middle Schools and KAFs Spring camp who participated in the Art and Me programme. Studio B is displaying Janet Carew, whose acrylics on canvas are inspired from the beauty she sees around her in Bermuda. The official opening reception will be from 5pm until 7pm with the usual wine, beer and soda with cheese and crackers provided. All exhibits will run until May 14th.
The Bermuda Sloop Foundation and Masterworks Foundation have come together to offer a special event on Friday, April 26th. From 6pm until 8.30pm, Art in Sailing, their collaborative fundraising effort will include drinks and hors d’ oeuvres, a silent auction and a raffle. Admission is $10. The Bermuda Society for the Blind are showing a screening of a documentary film about coping with vision loss on Friday, April 26th. Going Blind will be shown at BUEI from 6pm until 9pm. The talented kids at Somersfield Academy are starring in a musical production of the intriguingly named Alice in Wonderland Jr. on Friday, April 26th at 7pm and Saturday, April 27th at 2pm and 7pm. Adult tickets are $25 and student tickets are $10. There is an optional children’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party an hour before the Saturday matinee for an additional $15 per child. Shopping and family-fun galore on on offer at the Anglican Parish of Pembroke Spring Fair on Saturday, 27th April. From 10am until 4pm in the St. John’s Church grounds, you can expect all the fun of the fair, including cotton candy, popcorn, pancakes, burgers, chillis and soups, hotdogs, refreshments, bouncy castles, giant slide, kids rides, a thrift shop, plants, books and DVDs, arts and crafts, photo booth, baked goods, African dancers, gymnasts, Barney, a youth choir, storytelling, face-painting, DJ music, remembrance candles, games and prizes. $5 door prize tickets will be available for purchase, with prizes including iPad, iPad mini, iPad Touch, Apple TV and more. All proceeds will go towards their Youth Ministry and Community Outreach Programmes. Admission is free but they ask that you bring a tin of food for their community feeding programmes. The Bermuda Volleyball Association has announced that the 21st Annual Dasani Corporate Volleyball Tournament will be held at Warwick Academy Field on Satuday, April 27th from 9.30am. This is a 6-a-side co-ed tournament, also open to non-BVA members and is intended to introduce new people to the sport of volleyball as well as provide groups/companies with the opportunity to participate in a community event together. You don’t have to be a corporation to register a team as all groups and organisations are welcome. The registration cost is $240 per team, and net sponsorship is also available at a cost of $100 per net. For more details, see their website at www.bermudavolleyball.bm.
Will Black and The Crazy Wednesdays are teaming up to bring you a Live Band Jam at Hog Penny on Saturday, April 27th. This will feature Will Black and Mick Ward on vocals and guitars, Gavin Thomason on drums and Jamie Lovell on bass guitar, all performing modern rock favourites for your listening pleasure from 10.30pm until 1am, with no cover charge.
Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is hosting a Special Guest Exhibition of works by iconic sports photographer Neil Leifer. Knockouts! will open on Thursday, May 2nd in the Rick Faries Gallery with the reception from 5.30pm until 7pm. The following evening, Friday, May 3rd, at 5.30pm, Neil Leifer will present a Special Guest Lecture and Slideshow on photographing and interviewing last year’s Olympic Medal winners. A great event for bibliophiles, the Friends of The Sunshine League are hosting a 2013 Heritage Month Bookathon each Saturday in May from 10am until 5pm. This is a sale of collectible, out of print Bermuda Heritage Books held at the Sunshine League at 27 King Street, Hamilton. Their display table will feature books for children, advanced readers, and copies of Fame Magazine July 1974. Select Palette Art (SPArt) will be showcasing an exhibit of works by K. LaVonne a.k.a. Kendra LaVonne Earls at Common Ground, with the opening from 5pm until 7pm on Thursday, May 9th. Candle-Lite: Love’s Takin’ Over expresses romantic feelings of Spring’s new life with flowing movement of bright and bold colour, and will run until September. A unique opportunity to gain insights from one of the world’s leading experts in negotiations, business strategy, and collaboration on Wednesday, May 8th, as the Penn & Wharton Bermuda Alumni Association presents Negotiation: How to Get What You Want with Mario Moussa, MBA, PhD. From 6pm in the Harbourview Ballroom at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, Dr. Moussa will give a presentation on how to build skills at using negotiations to create win-wins and get what you want. Dr. Mario Moussa is a Senior Fellow at Wharton Executive Education, University of Pennsylvania. He teaches negotiation, influence, strategy, change, and corporate culture and is co-director of the Wharton School’s Strategic Persuasion Workshop: The Art and Science of Selling Ideas. The MAMA Summer Fair is back on Saturday, May 11th from 3pm until 6pm at Somersfield Academy. This will be full of family-friendly fun, such as bouncy castle, mini carousels and rides, entertainment tent, ball pond, toy town, popcorn, zorb ball, cotton candy, ice cream, balloons, Dottie the clown and more. Family tickets are $20 in advance or $30 on the door for members, or $30 in advance and on door for non-members. Tickets are available from MAMA playgroups, committee members or email social@mama.bm.
Ministerio Hermandad is offering a special bilingual marriage seminar in English and Spanish on Saturday, May 18th and Sunday, May 19th at Berkeley Institute. Dogs are not mandatory but will be very welcome at the Bermuda SPCA’s 16th Annual Paws to the Park Dog Charity Walk on Sunday, May 19th. This sponsored 1 or 3 mile walk will start at the Berry Hill Road entrance of the Botanical Gardens at 9.30am. After the walk, there will be an education table, dog products, pet portraits, food and more. The registration fee is $35 and the first 150 people will receive a free t-shirt and goodie bag. Despite its name, the Bermuda Regiment Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess Gatorade Fun Run, Walk & Ride on Sunday, May 19th will be open to everyone. There are four age categories, including 13-17, 18-39, 40-49, and 50+ and you can choose from the 5 mile bike ride (starting at 8.30am), the 3 mile walk (starting at 8.35am) or the 5 mile run (starting at 9am). The first 25 Bike Riders, the first 75 Runners and the first 25 Walkers to collect their race number will get a sponsor-provided t-shirt. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize males and females for the Runners and 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes overall for Walkers and Bike Riders.
