October 22nd, 2014: Bermuda Events Update

Morning Troops!

So glad we all emerged from Gonzalo without any serious injuries – what a scary night though!  I for one am really looking forward to a storm-free weekend.  Here’s the latest line-up of what’s happening in Bermuda:

1022 Pumpkin Carving Competition

Try your creative hand at pumpkin carving and see if you can win a prize.

The deadline for the Youth Library’s Pumpkin Carving Competition is on Wednesday, October 22nd, with judging the following day.

Categories are for children aged 10 to 18 years and for families of children aged to and under with the support of an adult. Prizes will be given for the funniest, scariest and most creative pumpkin.

Entry forms can be picked up from the library.

For more information, contact 295-0487.

1023 La Serena Express Anniversary

Celebrate La Serena Express Spa’s 1 Year Anniversary from 6pm on Thursday, October 23rd.

All guests will receive a gift bag, champagne, complimentary treatments, prize draw and shopping specials on Elemis products and clothing.

1024 Unreal Portraits Teresa Kirby Smith

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art invite you to join them in the Rick Faries Gallery for the opening reception of the exhibition, Unreal Portraits by Teresa Kirby Smith, from 5.30pm until 7pm on Friday, October 24th.

Unreal Portraits is an ongoing series consisting thus far of approximately fifty images, fourteen of which comprise this exhibition. The idea behind the series was to take real people and superimpose wholly new identities upon them.

All portraits are shot using black-and-white film and none have been digitally manipulated.

The exhibit will run until November 5th.

For more information, contact 299-4000 or artmworks@logic.bm.

1024 Haunted Library Twisted Tales

Dress in your Halloween best and Twisted Tales will come alive at the Haunted Youth Library on Friday, October 25th.

From 5.30pm until 8pm, this haunted house experience will lead kids on a walk through the haunted library, with a treat provided at the end.

This event is suitable for children aged 4 and over.

Early bird tickets are $3 or $5 on the door. Costumes are required.

For more information, or to book tickets, call 295-0487.

1026 Show and Prove

Kingdom Academy presents Show & Prove, a showcase of gifted local talent at 6pm, City Hall on Sunday, October 26th.

This event is being held to raise awareness of their school and performers will include New G Praise Team, Bermuda Gymnastics Association, Champion Taekwondo Bermuda, Yassin Chentouf, In Motion School of Dance, Sia Spence and Spoken Word by Shanai.

The cost is $30 per person.

For more information, or for tickets, contact secretary@kingdomacademy.co or 534-2326.

1031 Boo Bash on Queen Street

Queen Street and Bermudiana Arcade’s retailers and restaurants are teaming up once again for the 2nd Annual Boo Bash on Queen Street on Friday, October 31st.

From 5pm until 7.30pm, they will be providing a safe trick-or-treating environment for kids aged 12 and under. The festivities will start off in the Bermudiana Arcade and Daisy & Mac, where there will be fun Halloween games, face painting, glitter tattoos while staff from Daisy & Mac will be dressing up and handing out candy and spooky punch.

The event will then continue with the costume parade at Lemon Tree Cafe from 7pm, with prizes for Best Costume, Most Creative Costume and much more.

The retailers and restaurants on Queen Street who are also participating in this fun, free community activity include Lemon Tree Cafe, All Things Sassy, KFC, Baked and Bermuda Book Store.

For more information, contact 295-7477.

1106 PechaKucha Bermuda

Promising another lively and thought-provoking evening, PechaKucha Bermuda is hosting its 9th Edition on Thursday, November 6th at 6pm at the Bermuda Society of Arts in City Hall.

PechaKucha Nights were started in Japan and are a simple, effective and entertaining method to tell your story or idea. Each speaker shows 20 images to accompany their presentation, each for 20 seconds. Since there is no pausing or going back, speakers have no choice but to keep to their allotted time. Following each presentation is a 3 minute 20 second Q&A session with the audience. Topics will vary from Bermuda environmental issues, Bermuda and natural birthing, Renaissance and Bermuda Art.

There is no cover charge but donations will be accepted.

For more information, or if interested in presenting, contact Nicky Gurret at 295-4597 or gurret@northrock.bm.
